What is friendship? 3t is many things — It is feeling completely natural with another, shedding all pretense and all sham, just being yourself. It is sharing with another both big and little things, joy and sorrow, laughter and tears. It is counting on another to understand your moods, to put up with your failings, to be there when needed most with a word of encouragement, a smile, a look. How do I know what friendship is? I know because you are my friend, and you are all these isssp r . iSS The proper office of a friend is to side with you when you are wrong. Nearly anybody wiil side with you when you are right. This process and preparation for life is academically and socially intermingled with Chaucer, Shakespeare and Browning, Darwin and frogs, finger paintings, modern analysis, grade school assemblies, birthday parties, jelly sandwiches, Spanish verbs, wood shop, typing, football, basketball, snowballs, summer vacations, white prom dresses, pink-tipped carnations and graduation. Graduation is called commencement and everyone thinks it means the end. And in a way it is. It is the end of having co get up at six for Driver’s Ed. or waiting in.long cafeteria lines. It is the end of classes, homework and detention. It is a time for setting aside faded levis and dusty shoes and wearing long robes and mortarboards and marching precariously to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance and receiving a diploma in a blur of tears and f lashcubes. The annual speaker annually tells the audience that there has never been a class to compare with this year’s. He also states that commencement is not only an end to one part of life, but is a beginning to another. And he’s right. Commencement is a beginning. For many students it means obtaining employment, marching to the marines or marching down an aisle. For others it is scholarships, fellowships and college. Commencement is an announcement to a weary world that new hope is on the way. Especially noticeable arc the athletes, both those who leave writh the graduation class and those to whom the graduates are leaving the chance to garner even greater honor for the school. With the most successful wrestling season in the history of the school, a great basketball record, and the meteoric rise of girls sports on the boards, courts, and track, this year calls for a special tribute to the athlete and to sports in general. For sports are simply a means to an end, the end being a successful life. Sports creates an atmosphere of teamwork that the athlete retains throughout his life. The athlete develops the ability to deal successfully with those with whom he works as he develops a comparability with his teammates, be it on the gridiron, basketball or tennis, courts, or wrestling mac. And finally, sporrs gives the athlete a chance to bring glory to the alma mater, the institution that he learns to love, honor, and respect during his high school career. Football, the sport that demands all from its players. The grueling workouts, the straining of muscles, as well as the grind of determination; the average spectator doesn’t realize what these young men go through. Confidence in yourself as well as your teammates proves successful on or off the field. In a game, if a player is satisfied with himself, winning or losing does not determine a victory. 05 ROW ONE: Tim Tamaci, Kevin England, Mike Armeni, Mike Sanatino, Mike Riffee, Bill Rich, Dave Hook, Jim Buchmann, Gary Votaw, Ed Finn, ROW TWO: Scott Guiler, Ted Yuhaniak, Mark Hill, Greg Sisler, Doug Holroyd, Bob Watterson, Mark Batcha, Mark McCulloch, Bill Roth, Sam Mountz. Whether it be a studious, mind-expanding club or a club simply for fun, each serves a purpose. Students can express themselves and strive for individuality but at the same time have similar interests and work together with their friends in order to meet their goals. The chatter of excited voices as plans are being discussed at Pep Club or the soft melody coming from the music wing typify the diverse interests that are constantly being displayed within the walls of S.H.S. With the Quaker spirit behind them, many students do their part to make things happen — they do not merely sit by and watch. As they laugh and cry together, each frustration and every accomplishment brings them closer to personal and emotional maturity. 125 Student Involvement Betters School Student Council began working in the summer by having bake sales in order to send four members to state workshop. The delegates brought back much enthusiasm and new ideas. During the year, Student Council was busy sponsoring both Homecoming and Valentine’s Day dances. Also on Valentine’s Day, they operated the annual Valentine’s Day Booth. Civic-minded Hi-Tri spent their time promoting the welfare of those less fortunate. At Christmas, they donated food to a needy family. On Valentines Day, representatives from Hi-Tri went to the Columbiana County nursing home to give home-made Valentines to the residents. The highlight of the year was a banquet attended by the girls and their mothers. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Cindy Dominc, Secretary; Sally Boone, President; Sally Kendall, Treasurer. This three-act comedy traces the well executed antics of two elderly spinster ladies as they poison elderly gentlemen with their spiced-up elderberry wine. This light comedy was modified to include the Christmas season and featured many seasoned actors as well as various newcomers. This was the first play directed by Mr. Robert Viencek. The audiences were thoroughly amused. The children’s play presented this year was the long loved story The Adventures of Brer Rabbit.” This lovable story portrayed the lives of all the animals in the ever-popular briar patch. The elementary students of Salem’s public schools were delighted by the exaggerated foolery of Brer Rabbit, Brer Wolf, Brer Fox, and all the other critters” in the briar patch. This children’s production and past productions were sponsored by the P.T.A. in Salem. BRER RABBIT FLAY CREW: ROW 1: Julie Purrington, Tod Raymond, Mark Zimmerman, Irene Murphey, Diane Greenamyer. This year’s musical H.M.S. Pinafore” was a smashing success at S.H.S. It was the first true operetta the Drama Department had produced. Mr. Cole directed che acting and music, assisted by Mr. Viencek with scenery and Miss Hornung with costumes. A cast and crew of almost 80 helped with the classic show. But all too quickly for some (and much too late for others) concert season rolls around and the marching band turns into a more music-minded group. The band represented Salem well by receiving an excellent rating at District Contest. There were also many students who went to the District Solo and Ensemble Contest. The band is an excellent group of students who can be very proud of their performances. The juniors chose a different type of theme this year for their Prom. The theme 2001 Space Odyssey” proved to be a good one. Centuries later modern man continues to aspire for excellence. Recognition comes with the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize or any number of awards which honors the exceptional human being. At Salem High School many students have demonstrated outstanding ability and dedication in .their quest for developing their talents and potential. Obtaining a goal is never an easy task. Through its various sections it attempts to vividly display the wide range of emotions and activities which exist among Salem students and it is hoped that this year’s QUAKTR is successful in this. However, to achieve a good representation and one which is aesthetically pleasing, the staffs have added several features to the book this year which heighten not only its effectiveness, but also its cost h must also be noted that returns from student sales in no way finance the lxx k’s production, hut rather its chief funds are derived from advertising and patronage in the Ql IAKER. Most important, though, is the fact that Salem High School cannot be depicted successfully as an institution in itself, but rather as an integral parr of the Salem community, just as Salem as a community is not whole without its schixils. Both are social institutions which complement each other and are necessary for each other’s existence. In keeping with these twrc ideas, the business staff this year decided to increase the advertising section and add a ''Professional Page. improvements which will finance new features in the book as well as make it more representative of the community. In appreciation of the added support of the community, it is hoped that the students will patronize those from concerned businessmen who have advertised, thus making their ads Svork to attract new business. These advertisers are indexed on page 209 at the rear of this section. 2 BIB ®ii§ sfiSi l lilii I) BECKER GOLD CROSS AMBULANCE COMPANY G.A.C. Is FinanceAmerica 52A E.
