Besides teaching the BASIC principles of Mathematics» the math department does much more for those students that continue in it. It develops a mind to be analytical. In the advanced phases of mathematic study, students learn the fundamentals of shape. They then go on to learn the different applications of algebra and some students even find out the BASICS of computer programming. The senior courses develop the mathematical mind to the fullest and prepare it for college. Mathematics is one of the most important fields in the world of tomorrow, and the student with insight can see the advantage of learning as much about it as possible. 26

Evelyn Meraire — English II Michael Powers — English II This year, as last year, the English department offered the students of SHS a variety of courses. These courses served to develop the students knowledge of his native tongue. As courses become more revelant to the student's environment, they enable him to cope more adequate with his surroundings in a way that was previously impossible. He can more easily transfer his knowledge into material which he can use in daily life. This knowledge also provides a basis very necessary for other studies the student may pursue. The main purpose in English, however, is to teach students how to communicate with their fellow man. This art is taught by the use of putting the ideas into practice. A student's vocabulary is built and his writing talent is developed. And in certain classes in the department, the ability to communicate with gestures and expressions is taught. Students fail to realize the scope of the English department and wonder of the value of these classes, but let them try to communicate without the use of knowledge they have received in these classes.
