They keep us organized, informed, and up- to-date. Without their help, our school could very easily turn into an enormous, disorganized heap. Their usual, friendly smile lets one know that any situation has a bright side. Without the patient co-operation of these people, many simple student activities could be suspended. For example, what would many students do if they had to spend all their study time in study hall? The library serves as a place where students can get away from the tension of classes and put themselves into a more relaxed atmosphere, a vacation in the middle of a hard day. The services of all these people are vital to school life. 22 Helen Heim — Head Librarian Richard Stoffer — Counselor ABOVE: F, E. Cope — Athletic Director; RIGHT: Anita Rossi — Counselor John Ol Ionian —Counselor The job of the counseling staff is to counsel students and help them decide what to do with their lives. They may lead a student down the road to college, or down another road — to a productive occupation. Counselors main job is to see that students take the classes that will best develop them for their future. Whatever problem arises in the school life of a student, counselors will usually step in to help out that student as much as they can. They are the mediator of most disturbances. The athletic director is in charge of much more than just making out sport schedules. He must regulate the school’s sports activities in such a way as to not interfere with the educational development of the athlete. His job takes more than rime — it takes dedication. 23 Bill Esposito — Mass Media, English III, Voc. These courses served to develop the students knowledge of his native tongue. As courses become more revelant to the student's environment, they enable him to cope more adequate with his surroundings in a way that was previously impossible. He can more easily transfer his knowledge into material which he can use in daily life. This knowledge also provides a basis very necessary for other studies the student may pursue. The main purpose in English, however, is to teach students how to communicate with their fellow man. This art is taught by the use of putting the ideas into practice. A student's vocabulary is built and his writing talent is developed. And in certain classes in the department, the ability to communicate with gestures and expressions is taught. Students fail to realize the scope of the English department and wonder of the value of these classes, but let them try to communicate without the use of knowledge they have received in these classes. Impossible. ABOVE: Julieann Miles — English III, Speech, Persuasive Speech, Theater Production; BELOW: Margaret Baker English I Besides teaching the BASIC principles of Mathematics the math department does much more for those students that continue in it. It develops a mind to be analytical. In the advanced phases of mathematic study, students learn the fundamentals of shape. They then go on to learn the different applications of algebra and some students even find out the BASICS of computer programming. The senior courses develop the mathematical mind to the fullest and prepare it for college. Mathematics is one of the most important fields in the world of tomorrow, and the student with insight can see the advantage of learning as much about it as possible. 26 CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Bill Hetrick — Practical Math, Algebra I, Geometry; Doris Loria — Geometry; Carl Bevingcon — Advanced Algebra, Modern Analysis, Statistics, Trigonometry; Roger Rogos — Review Math, Algebra I; Ken Bosu — Pre-Algebra; Jane Eckstein — Algebra I 27 CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Frank Parks — Biology; Frances Corso — Biology; Susanne Burton — Earth Sci- ence II; Kirk Ritchie — Earth Science I; Don Turner — Chemistry; Robert Nelson — Earth Science II, Chemis- try, Physics Science is an important subject for the technological age that is upon us. Biological sciences deal with the study of life and the living organisms around us. In this field of science, a student learns how to classify plants and animals and is also taught the basic structure of these organisms. The physical sciences deal with the natural occurring events around us chat do not pertain to life. They teach a student how to grasp the idea that the air we breathe and the pressure exerted on our bodies affect us. They start from the simple structure of an atom and lead a student into a capacity of understanding energy itself. The field of science is one of the fastest growing fields today, and students who hope to continue in this learning experience will find it to be the true field of the future.7’ 28 29 The Social Science department provides the student with a chance to comprehend present and future situations through a study of the past. It is through this study of the past and its difficulties that a student recognizes today's problems and is able to relate to them. By means of a free exchange of ideas and class discussions, a student receives the facts and many differing points of view which he must evaluate before he forms his final opin- ion. This evaluation must be objective and unbiased if the opinion is to be of any worth in today's society. Students must also study the methods of finding information and mak- ing intelligent decisions regarding different subjects. This enables them to develop a sense of responsibility which is necessary in their role as the citizens and leaders of tomorrow. Through special projects, a student is encour- aged to research an area of special interest and report his findings and decisions to the class. A student also studies the information and function of different kinds of governments to learn about his background and grow to appreciate his heritage. Besides merely teaching students pronunciation, spelling, and conjugations, it shows students the culture of their foreign land. Many times, this is more important than the language itself. Led by an eternal quest to instruct students on how tc communicate with a foreigner, the department then builds on their foundation until students feel that they have lived in the country all their life. Their first idea of a country as a small, impenetrable world develops into a mature understanding of a culture that survives to communicate with everyone and anyone it can. The individual must first desire to improve, and the group as a whole must be a combination of total effort. A director makes it possible for the individual to become a working pan of the total group. He promotes the desire, confidence, and incentive in them chat is necessary for developing hidden talent. General Business informs the student of common business practices in today's society. Even basic understanding in this field will make a student more aware of his responsibilities in a complex world. Dexterity and co-ordination are the first abilities acquired in typing. Relating these skills to other classes makes for a well-rounded student. It offers girls the chance to learn a productive occupation that will help them find a job when they get out of school. Home Ec. and the other new classes in chat department are for the girls whose idea of life after school is not that liberal. Whichever road the young lady chooses to follow is, of course, up to her, but they do comprise one of the only alternatives to academic study. Jin McKenzie — IOE Steno 11 34 Susan Votaw — Home Ec, II, Child Care and Development, Family Living Sharon Korn — Vocational Secretary Dora Tinsley —Trade Extension Secretary 35 Most students are unaware of the activities in the OWE department. They seem to be in seclusion, learning skills that are visibly pertenant to the industrial world we live in. As in IOE, this is one of the few alternatives left to students who do not wish to go further in academic studies. When many students leave OWE, they already have a job, their future is almost planned, and they tend to be more down to earth because of it. Many of these students learn that in their own field, they can surpass anyone. This instills perserverence into the individual. The close atmosphere in this work-study program reminds one of a family, and because this family” is small in comparison to other departments, the tie between the student and the teacher is strengthened. J. Robert Miller — OWE 1 Gerald Beiling — Drafting 1, II David Smith — Vocational Director 36 Donald Corner — Woodshop I, II, Metal shop I, II Making your own furniture and learning the ability to handle electrical equipment are a few of the skills taught in wood and metal shops. Although these students may not go on to OWE, they learn basic abilities that can be beneficial to them as adults. This department also takes on the easy-going attitude that is prevalent in the shop wing. Students and teachers work together to produce finished products that can be useful to everyone around them. They experience the joy of seeing an idea become tangible reality. 3 7 Paul Headland — Special Education The real meaning of unselfish giving is evident in the special ed. department. These teachers spend countless hours with each student as a teacher, counselor and friend. The teachers learn to express themselves in a sensitive manner, and in turn, the students learn to respond. Caring for people, and taking the extra step that is necessary in helping a student accomplish his goals make the special ed. teacher a living example of unselfish dedication. 38 Steve Krivonak — Special Education Vern Strauss — Health Tom Titus — Boy’s Physical Education Betty McKenna — Gir!!s Physical Education Many students feel that physical education is either a waste of time or a whole period of messing around. It’s neither. The physical education program was developed by a federal law stating all students must have some physical education. The Salem High staff responds to this by trying to make phys, ed. interesting. With the help of the school board, new equipment has been purchased with the intent of making ' gym” worthwhile to everyone. Students are actually learning how to do certain physical feats and are, at the same time taught the values of good sportsmanship. Health, also required, helps students realize the importance of keeping both their bodies and minds in top condition. It also instructs students on how to cope with the injured and those mentally disturbed. It’s main purpose is to explain to students why people in the best of shape tend to lead the happiest lives. 39 Jan Ycreb — Painting, Commercial Art, Design Special teachers are required to guide and watch over students involved in the fine arts. These teachers can only pass on their knowledge of techniques. The over-all outcome is based entirely upon the talent and creativity of the individual. The personalities of both student and teacher are reflected in a very different view compared to the ho-hum routine of classroom-textbook procedures. Art classes provide opportunities for complete originality and working at independent paces, A completed work not only brings joy to the student, but also satisfaction to the teacher. Responsibility and sincerity are qualities that prevail behind the doors of the fine arts, and the teacher holds the key to these doors. The falling leaves are whispering winter's on its way. I close my eyes remembering the warmth of yesterday. Ic seems a shame to see September swallowed by the wind, and more than that it’s oh so sad to see the summer end. And though the changing colors are a lovely thing to see If it were mine to make the change I think I’d let it be. But I don't remember hearing anybody asking me. —John Denver STEVE ADAMS DAVID ANDERSON CHRIS ARMENI RANDY BAKER MIKE BARRETT DANNY BARTELS DAVID BARTHOLOMEW SAMMY BARTH LEONARD BATCHA CHRIS BELICH ED BENNETT PATRICIA BENNETT CATHY BERG KIM BERGER KENNETH BINNS 127 RANDY BLEAKLEY MARTHA BOECKLING CATHY BOOTH MICHELE BORK DENA BORRELLI JOHN BOTU DAN BRADLEY JOHN BREAZEALE PAM BRENNAN ROBIN BROWN KEVIN BUSH 128 PAM BUSH SUSAN BYRD DAVE CALLAHAN MARIO CARREON RON CHAMBERLAIN JEFF CHAPPEL SHARON CHEWNING SUSAN CHILSON 129 SHERRY CLARK SCOTT COBOURN JOHN COLER MIKE COLIAN PAT CONWAY SHIRLEY COOPER JAY COPE CYNTHIA CORLE JUDITH COWIE BARBARA COY BARRY CRANMER DAVID CROOKSTON CAROL CUBBAGE META CULLER DIANE CURTIS TIMOTHY DAVIS DENNIS DeROADS PAMELA DEVAN PATSY DEVAN LINDA DIMKO GENE DIXSON TOM EAKIN TIM EATON DEBBIE EHRHART SYLVIA EHRHART RUBY EICHLER HARRIET ELLIS RANDALL ELLIS PATRICIA ELROD SHELLEY ENGLERT ROBERT ESTERLE TOM EWING JUDY FAGAN MELISSA FALK MARTIN FIELD MARY FITHIAN MIKE FLOOD DAVID FORKEL RICK FORKEL 132 JON FOSTER MICKI FRANKLIN STACEY FRANKS ANN FRITZMAN DAVID GBUR CLIFF GILBEY WILLIAM GOUGHENOUR JEFFREY GRAY WILLIAM GREENISEN JOHN GROSS REBECCA GUAPPONE DAVID GUSHERT 133 LINDA HAHN KATHY HAMILTON CLAUDIA HANNA DEBORAH HARDWICK DEBORAH HARTMAN DEBRA HARVEY ALMA HAYS DARYL HEESTAND SUSAN HELMICK JAMES HERRON LEO HICKEY 134 PEGGY HIEGEL ELAINE HIGGINS JUDY HILLIARD ROBERT HODGE BARRY HOLLINGER DOUG HOOBLER SUE HORNING DAVID HROVATIC RANDY HRVATIN GAIL HUFFMAN JOHN HUGHES 135 JAMES HULL MARK HURRAY LINDA HUSSAR MARK JANOSIK KIMJANOWIAK VALERIE JARVIS TOMJESKO RICHARD JONES 136 MICHAEL JORDAN MARCIA JULIANO DAN KAMINSKY CHARLES KELLNER JANE KIDDER JAMES KLEINMAN MICHAEL KNEPPER THOMAS KREPPS JUDI KUNIEWICZ VIVIAN KUPKA TWILA LAMB MARK LANDWERT MARK LEDERLE 137 BILL LEEPER PAULA LEIMBACH KATHLEEN LEIPPER MONICA LEPPING AUDREY LESICK PAULA LEWIS LuANNE LIMPOSE ANN LINTON KEVIN LIPPI ATT 138 LISA LONG DENISE LUCAS WHIT LUCE f JIM LUTZ RON LUTZ SANDY LYNN DAVID MAENZ TIM MALOY DIANE MARTIN TERESA MARTINELLI JAYNE MASSA EARL MAY 139 GAIL McADAMS MIKE McBRIDE mark McCartney LAURA McCORKHILL CLARK McCUE MARY McDEVITT TIM McDEVITT DARLEEN McDONALD MICHAEL McGOWAN KATHY MEEK ALICIA MEHNO 140 BRAD METZ LISA MILLER JAN MILLIGAN MINDY MILLIGAN ROBIN MINAMYER MIKE MINER TERRY MOUNTZ CLIFF MUHLEMAN Ml TINA NELSON ROGER NORDQUEST EDDA OLAFSDOTTIR JOYCE ONDREJKO DIANE PALMER DENA PAPARODIS HELEN PAPARODIS SUSIE PAPARODIS TERRI PAXSON 142 BRENDA PELLEY CHRIS PERSELLO LESLIE PHILLIPS DAVID PIETRAFESE DAVID POND CANDACE PREGIBON PATTY PREISLER CLIFF PROTZMAN LORETTA PSHSNIAK KIM PUKALSKI DONALD QUINN SANDY RALEY KAY RAMSAY DAVID RAY DANIEL RAYMOND 143 DAVID RAYMOND DEBORAH RISBECK SHERRY RITCHIE WILLIAM RITCHIE GAYLE ROBB DIANE ROBERTS RANDY ROBERTS MARTIN ROTH TONY ROTHBRUST JACK RUBLE HOLLIS SAUNDERS 144 BOB SCHAEFER VICKI SCHAEFFER ELLEN SCHNEIDER DAN SCHLARB RICHARD SCHROCK GAYLE SCHUSTER NANCY SCULLION RICHARD SEKELY GAY SHINN RICHARD SHOOP ROBERT SLAVENS CHRIS SMITH DEBORAH SMITH GARY SMITH MARYANNE SNYDER 145 JANET SOBOTKA DIANA SOMMERS RONALD SPACK SHARON SPACK SUSAN SPOONER TERRY STEELE 146 DEBBIE STEPHENS KEVIN STEVES ANN STEWART MARK STILWELL JAMES STONE CAROL SWETYE DON TARLETON CURT THAYER BRENT TICE BRAD TOLSON MARIA TOTANI DAWN ULRICH KRIS ULRICH 147 KURT VANFOSSAN FRED VOGEL JAMES VOTAW JEFF VOTAW JIM WALKER VICTORIA WARD RONALD WARREN MIKE WATTERSON STEPHEN WAUGH MIKE WEINGART DON WHITACRE 148 TOM WHITELEATHER CHERYL WICKERSHAM JAMES WIGGERS JOSEPH WINKLER RANDY WINTERS MARY JO WRIGHT STEVE WRIGHT JILL YUHANIAK MARY ZATKO JEFF ZECK DEBRA ZIMMERMAN U9 GARY ZOCOLO DEBRA CREER Quakers Capture Fourth Title VARSITY TRACK: 1st ROW: Bob Spanbaucr, Dave Smith, Scott Citino, Don Farmer, Doug Holroyd, Dave Ray, John Piersol, Jeff Foust, Cliff Muhleman, Paul Shivers, Terry McElroy, Pete Pshsmak; 2nd ROW: Jeff Protzrnan, Rick Schwartz, Kevin Lippiatt, Mark Hill, Scott Guiler, Dan Warner, GregSisler, Roger Nordquest, Mark McCullough, Bill Rich, Dion Trele- ven, Tim Cope, Bill Lamb, Mike Miller; 3rd ROW: Butch Zeppernick, Kim Morrison,John (Jrsu, Doug Garloch, Bob Eaton, Dan Shcllcnbcrgcr, Don Quinn. They won 12 of their 14 matches this year. Their two defeats were very close and could have gone either way. The Quakers were paced by senior Charlie Griehs who played some of his best golf. The steady play of Fred Girsht, John Foster, and John Pri- don created a bright outlook for the future. Despite the record the Quakers managed to win their first tournament game since the beginning of baseball on the Salem sport scene. Only two seniors and one junior participated in the baseball program. They were Dave Warren, Len Batcha, and Bill Roth. The Quakers received good pitching from Warren and sophomore, Mike Stapleton. The hitting was provided by the team’s leading hitters Mark Batcha, Warren and Len Batcha, The Quakers were unable to put these two elements, which are so vital to winning, together for a prolonged period. Term papers, science projects, and boredom become a thing of the past, and students are caught up in the excitement of spring projects and after-school activities. The Bi-Weekly staff looks back on its first few issues with relief, and finishes the year with a sense of achievement. Ecology club promotes the beautification of the land by cleaning up Jitter and planting trees and flowers. AFS's spring pop bottle drive involves the entire community in an effort to finance next year’s student. And of course the juniors spend countless hours making the prom an evening to remember. The Alliance Vocational Department is the most complete in the area and offers students experience by working and related subject matter. The courses taught include auto body, auto mechanics, child care, commercial art, cosmetology, electronics, horticulture, printing, and welding. Spending their day in Alliance does not diminish their loyalties to their alma mater, nor does it alienate them from their Salem social life. On the contrary, their popularity is increased as their friends in both schools benefit from the commuted students abilities, which they transform into worthwhile hobbies as well as a career.
