We were young and trnstful comrades. Full of courage, yet timid too. Sometimes we wandered where light fades Corning out with strength anew. Our good captains guided us onward, Ever showing us the way And they led us always forward, 9 Making all hearts brighter day by day. This is your local news commentator, Lou Rowland, speaking to you through the courtesy of Station L.B.C., or more commonly known as the Lovell Broadcasting Company. Our Broadcast today centers around a group of people who graduated from Salem High School just ten years ago. A class, we are proud to say. which has progressed well and shall continue to progress. The Class of '-47! CSince it is considered to us a great honor to have the privilege to discuss such a well-known, and well-cultured group of citizens, applause should now follow. CGee, Thanks lj FLASH ! ! ! ! The former Betty Schmidt of Lovell City has returned from a New York shopping spree to take over the job as Matron Nurse in the Lovell Charity Hospital. Rumors have it that her husband, L. K. Mastergoon, is doing well in the 'revised Schmidt Machine Shop.' The Lovell Plain Dealer, our city paper. is under new editorship. XVe know very little about this prosperous gentleman editor evceot that his name is Mr, Donald Orians, and he was a graduate from Salem High School in the year of '47. However. we do have one important item about Mr. Orians which l'm sure will prove that he is a worthy man for the editorship. lt seems that the new editor has also been elected XVvanrlot County Livestock Inspector, by the President of the United States. Good Luck, Mr. lfditorll A Brooklyn school teacher, and a member of the United States Labor Organization, has arrived in town for a hve day visit with her parents. Her name is Betty Karg. and word has it that she is flashing' a lovely diamond on her left hand. Can this word be true?? David Snyder. who had been voted the most unattainable bachelor eve' to graduate from Salem High School, has bachelor's quarters in a fashionable hotel in New York City. Some of Dave's closer friends say he has sat up a small laleoratorv in one corner of the room. Perhaps yo'.1've heard more about him as that queer Dr. Snyder? But what's so queer about trying to invent technicolor bublzle g'um??? l see by the Society Page in todav's lllain Dealer that the former Miss -lanet Koehler has been electefl one of the ten best-dressed women in the world. She and her husband have started a modeling school on Fast Chip- pendale in lovell City, and plan to starr their two younger daughters as 'feature' models soon. They could not be chased out of town and crowds gathered on the streets and lawns to watch the building being constructed. However. we were not kept in the dark too long: for just last week the Newspapers fairly screamed out the news in large, black print, UNEXY GLUE FACTORY BUILT IN SOUTHEAST LOVELL CITYf' On reading up about this queer invention I found that the title of the new factory is the STICK AND STAY STUCK MARKET, and is under the proprietorship of none other than Lawrence Logsdon. It seems that in the 'classsot' 47.' there was one girl who longed to travel. And her longings have at last been answered. Her name is Miss Donna Nkalter and she has just competed w'th forty-nine others in a nation-wide spell-down at the XVhite House in YVZ1Sl1l11Q'fO1'I. D. C. Since her score proved to be the highest she is to receive a free trip to Europe to 'see the world ! XYhile Paul Orians, who enlisted in the Navy live years ago because he too, wanted to 'see the worldf is returning home with his discharge made hnal at last The surprise yet to come is this! Mr. Orians is bringing his young bride home with him. She has lived in China for so long that the Chinese call her SO SING LO. 1 VVe always did say back in '47, that the one who would most likely reach lieautv, success, and wealth hrst would lie Miss Rosemarv Mclieth. Miss McBeth has received a contract from Metro, and will go to Hollywood the last of this month to co-starr with Theodore Ladd In Lead On Mcliethf' VX'e would like to congratulate Mr Uorald Kear. of Hear Sz Company Airplane factory, for the excellent rapid increase in the production of planes this month. Championship The Reserve team this year had a perfect record as was the case last year by winning all 21 ball games. They made 943 points against their op- ponents 418. The Reserves played the Nevada Reserves in the VVyandot County tournament at Upper Sandusky, defeating the Bobcats 53-20. They then niet McCutchenville. VVith no difficulty they defeated them with a score of 46-11. The junior Cornhuskers reached the finals. There they met the Green Dragons of 'VVharton. Defeating them 50-21, they received the trophy for the championship for the third straight year. The Reserves now have won 46 ball games in a row and 60 out of 61 over a period of 3 years. The teams wish to thank the managers. Donald Kear and Cletus Orians. for their eH:orts in assisting them. The teams also wish to thank Coach Backensto for his patience and guidance during a most successful season. and the people of the community for their cooperation which was given during the season. Paul Orians 1946 - 1947 INTERESTING POINTS OF GAMES In the McCutchenville game which was played at Salem we had 100 per cent foul shooting. 10 for 10. At Marseilles we had a very interesting ball game. Trailing by 9 points with only three minutes to go, the boys turned on the steam and scored 20 points in those three minutes. In both of the Carey games we gave the fans what they like most, close ball games. In the one played at Carey. after leading most of the wav, we came from behind and scored 6 points in the last forty seconds to put the game in the bag. The game at Salem provided even more evcitement as it was a double overtime. Carey got off to a fast 4-point lead in the first over- time. In the second overtime after tving up Dennison, Carey's lanky 6foot 2 ce'ter. three times. Gene got the tip-off and tipped to Paul who dribbled unassisted +o the bucket for a lay up shot and the winning two points. At 1Vbarton we had an unnsnal bnll game. Xklharton scored on 50 per cent of their shots while we could connect on onlv 15 per cent of ours but inspite of our team being off we still came out on the top end of the score. Against Harnster in the Countv Tournament we had our best rer- centasfe of shots made from the field, 41 per cent. This enabled us to score 81 points. the most we scored in any one single ball game. In the District Tournament we had tbe best defense and also the best offensise team of all schools represented. Ytfe were defeated by Gibsonburg in the Fnals in an overtime period. The Varsity this year scored 1337 points to their opponents 881 points. 8332232382322 232222223 !22232X328888283!2X32!3!8X2228X!i!8X2828X32!838228!X228X!8X22X8 BASKETBALL LETTERMAN Dick Baker - Guard V fi at Dick played his fourth and last year of basketball for the Cornhuskers. He has always been a steady guard. He seemed to reach his peak when he made 5 long shots out of nine attempts in the Caledonia game and repeated the feat in the Vanlue game. After three years of varsity ball his absence will be keenly felt. Lawrence Logsdon - Guard Lawrence also played his last year at Salem. His chore was to take care of the towering giants on our opposing teams. His greatest joy was coming through with points when they were badly needed as in the Carey game and in the Semi-Finals of the tournament. Donald Orians - Forward i Don will be missed mostly for his aggressiveness as this is his last year at Salem. Don was a constant scoring threat as shown by his 9.3 point a game average. His jovial nature and ready wit will be missed on the ball club when he leaves after three most successful varsity seasons. Paul Orians - Forward David Paul's 34.5 shooting percentage was tops among the Senior five as was his 17.5 points a game average. After three years of varsity ball he seemed to enjoy playing best when the going was the toughest. l'aul's offensive rebound work will be an asset hard to replace. This was also Paulys last year at Salem. Snyder - Center Dave the last on our list of rotating captains was top among the foul shooters with a 76 per cent average. Bad ankles tried to keep him out of the lineup but his heart would not let them. This also is Dave's last year at Salem. W joe Logsdon - Guard Q V joe has one more year to go to Salem and if he improves as much next year as he did this year ak fine ball team is going to represent Salem. Joe's defensive work against taller men had him playing on the reserve games in all but nine quarters. Bill Sclfmidt - Forward The mumps were Bills chief complaint after a beautiful exhibition in the Vanlue game. Bill captained the undefeated reserve squad and also played more than half of the varsity ball games. Next year, his last year, Bill promises us much. Bill Weaver - Forward Bill led all of the substitutes in percentage of shots made from the field. The mention of the name Marseilles seemed to make Bill jump up and shoot as he did in both the last quarters of the Marseilles games. Bill has one more year at Salem. Gene Binau - Center Gene. in his pivot work and faking kept the opponents on their heels. Gene alternated at guard and center during the year and by his playing indicated that he would be nent year's varsitv center. A Sophomore. Gene remembers well the left handed shot that tied the Carey ball game. Bob Walter - Guard Bob is planning to make up for the team the aggressiveness that was lost with Don Orians. Bob's bright spot is his defensive work against a small, fast man. His keen eve for the basl-:et was shown in his five baskets out of ten shots in the Harpster Tournament game. Yi 5 SCHOOL CAFETERIA January 30, 1946, marked the opening of our school cafeteria. Mrs. Carl Gibson was chosen as head cook with Mrs. Oscar Laudenslager, Mrs. Floyd Sweigard, Mrs. Harry Pfeifer, and Mrs. Wan. Ross as her assistants. Each assistant rotated by 2 weeks periods of work in the cafeteria. Miss Marcille Steiner was the cafeteria supervisor. The high school girls who served the excellently prepared meals to the students were Saloma Frank, Shirley Frank, Rosella Kear, joan XYeaver. Kathleen Park. and Clara Thiel. Betty Karg and Rosemary McBeth alter- nated as cashiers. The seventh and eighth grade girls helped do dishes the first period after noon lunch. Beginning with the new school year last September, we were granted state aid of 9 cents for each student taking milk. and 7 cents for each student not taking milk. Besides this allotment, we were given surplus goods at various times throughout the year. Type A meals were served at 20 cents per meal. Approximately an average of 135 students ate at the cafeteria every day. gm- 1 Y - Marr F- 7 ,- , - Y .. D . - .-.- 411601 ina lf--w....,., fiifgf V 2 45 W-....,. S L. ,,, sim .L , -.f..w,.,.,.. M M: .nw 28 OPERETTA, H. M. S. PINAFGRE The Music Department of the High School presented the operetta H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan, on Friday evening, March 21st, before an audience that filled most of the auditorium. Colorful costumes and scenery helped to make the production effective in addition to the excellent singing by the principals and chorus. The story of the operetta was an interesting one and not the usual type. The Captain of H.M.S. Pinafore wants his daughter CJosephineJ to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First lord of the Admiralty, but she is in love with Ralph, a sailor. They agree to elope, but their plan is betrayed by Dick Deadeye, the villain. A dumboat woman, Little Buttercup Cin love with the captainl, informs the First lord that the captain and Ralph had accidently been exchanged as infants. To rectify this error the First lord reduces the captain to an ordinary sailor and makes Ralph captain. Both Josephine and Little Buttercup wed the lovers of their choice under this grotesque arrange- ment and with the blessing of the First lord, who marries, Hebe. The cast was as follows: The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B. ........ Donald Kear Captain Cocoran ........................ . .. Lawrence Logsdon Ralph Rackstraw ....... The director was Mr. Crook and the accompanist was Mrs. Richard Backensto. Miss Steiner was in charge of make-upg Reva and Paul Orians, tickets: Mr. Jones in charge of the stage. 23383!!!3i8283328228!2238!XX2!!2!23!2!888XX2228X!X2XX23X2!X232!2!!23X22XX!!22X!22!!X!!!X3223!2!!!2X3XX2!232XX2 !22S22222X22X22!X22!2X2S!22X32X22!2322 ADVERTISMENTS N fl W w f ..--k Nx K a fe Alv- X CALENDAR SNAPSHOTS IN MEMORY OF HUMOR - ...,..-..,. -,.....,.4,,,.Y ,..-,,,ijGw R2883MMWXUWNRSMMMMMWUWWRXRWSWMMMMWXSXQSWWXWMRWQWWWWWW XX3!33XX3X833X3XX88XXX!3!X2!32!!2!S22!22 if Z f . g 2 , Smart Styling Marks 1947 Frazer 2 f 5 5 2 5 S 2 2 S Q X 2 2 i 5 5 5 2 E Q .
