Mrs. Cox, one of our biology teachers, has made quite a name for herself, as well as for the school, in the field of science, with her bo-ok Exploring Biology. Mr. Olloman, a new and thoroughly capable biology teacher, is also an ex ert archer and so is an advisor for the Archery Club. Mr. Clarke, genegl science and physics teacher, has charge of all the stage lighting for plays, etc., as well as acting as cross- country coach. Jones John P- Ollomfm VUUATIUNS Vocational subjects are always popular among high school students, as they give one an opportunity actually to work with, examine, or make the thing that he is studying about. More things are furnished to help the student in Vocational subjects t an in any other, and so should be greatly appreciated. Mr. Engelhart teaches classes in metal industries. Miss Ritt has charge of the sewing and home economics, while Miss Morgan, who came to Salem during the middle of this school year, quite ably instructs classes in cooking. LANGUAGES if if if if A very complete language cuakiculum may be found at Salem High, namely: German, Latin, Spanish and French. Each of these subjects except German, forms the basis of a club. Except for Latin, club mem- bers correspond with students in the countries whose languages they are studying, as Well as speak and sing that language at club meetings. Ger- man is admirably taught by Mi., Beardmore, who also teaches history and acts as senior class advisor. Latin is taught by Miss Harroff, who also holds the position of Hi-Tri advisor. Spanish is under the super- vision of Miss Hollett, who also teaches English. French is taught by Miss Roth. She is also teacher of American history. ir . , ,, l - f Qi? Through these studies, one can become familiar with prob- lems of social living, economic yioblems, and problems of international relations. The student learns how to become a useful citizen, how to deal with social problems, etc. Mr. Guiler teaches American Government, In- ternational Relations, Public Speaking and acts as debate coach. This year, for the first time, it was necessary for seniors to take two periods of hygiene since no physical training is given the junior year due to the large freshman and sophomore classes, who are required to take it. Mr. Cope has charge of e boys' gym classes and Miss Hanna has charge of the girls'. Miss Sc eder acts as school nurse and teaches the girls' hygiene classes. Schroeder CCMMEIICIAL SUBJECTS Commercial subjects play a very important part in Salem High curric- ulum. Many students take at least one commercial subject during their high school career, as they can puito practical use in any career. Typing is probably the most popular commercial study. It may be taken in many forms, personal typing, beginner's typing, and advanced typing. Miss Bickel teaches typing and shorthand. Mr. Hilgendorf teaches salesman- ship, sociology, bookkeeping, general business, and is advisor for the business staf of the Quaker.
