ir 'lr BUAHD UF EDUCATION if if if as Behind the academic and social programs of Salem High stands a small group of citizens who have no direct contact with the student body, yet Whose efforts and interest are clearly manifested in the high type of edu- cation offered here. ln the hands of this group rests the responsibility of setting the stand- ard of education for Salem High so that it Will be to the best interests of the individual student, of the local community, and of the nation. In formulating the educational policies of the school, the Board of Edu- cation has served the youth of Salem immeasurably by providing a thor- ough, practical curriculum, supplemented by a very essential feature, that of extra-curricular activities which afford the student an opportunity to develop special skills. In providing for supplies, repairs, and other material needs of the school, the Board has shown an awareness of the importance of adequate, modern equipment in high school training. During the past year, in particular, the work of an earnest and capable organization has been especially evident. The new Wing, construction of which Was supervised by the Board of Education, has aided the faculty greatly in administering to the needs of their classes. To the Board of Education, upon whose work to a marked degree de- pends not only the quality, but also the very existence of our high school instruction, We express our appreciation. Standing: A. E. Presiding with dignity over all the Salem City schools, Mr. E. S. Kerr is a Well-known person to all Salem High students. He has had much experience in the field of education, serving as a teacher, principal, and superin- tendent in Oliio schools. Mr. Kerr blelieves that the constant advancement of education is necessary for the purpose of building strong and reliable citizens. With this in mind, he has set a fast pace for advancement in Salem schools. 'A' Mr. Lewis Smith, dean of boys, has a thorough understanding of the problems of teen-age boys and has Won their lasting respect and admira- tion with his just treatment in dealing with their misdemeanors and his sound solutions to their problems. A well-liked member of the faculty, he has interested himself particularly in athletics and has furthered such inter-ests as touch football and intramural basketball. ENGLISH f f English plays a very important pgt in the curriculum of Salem High. We have an exceptionally fine lot of highly trained, scholastically minded teachers in our English Department. Miss Bodo, who is substituting for Mr. James McDonald, very capably holds he position of dramatic teacher and coach, Mr. Brautigam is the band di ctorg Mr. Lehman teaches journal- ism and acts as advisor for the Quaker editorial staffg and Mr. Early, who is the tennis coach, also teaches social studies. gg 'lr , I ,, H. Brautiga MATHEMATICS Mathematics, better known as 'rithmeticf' has always played an im- portant part in schools, since they we? first invented way back when . . . It is a very popular subject in Sale High and is very ably taught by a group of mathematically minded teachers. Miss Miller, who is substitut- ing for Miss Douglass this year, also acts as one of the Hi-Tri advisors.
