se eee oe RR AAPOR See. aANS SEAS ve a ae aCe Final Foreword The final year of Salem High School is quickly fading with each closing day. We all grieve with the knowledge that no longer will our Alma Mater be sung, no longer will we cheer at pep rallies, no longer will we watch our Mighty Tigers in action, and never again will Salem graduate a Senior Class after 1973, Each of you have memories of this year special only to you, These memories you must always cling to. . . for there shall never be another year such as this year, never another school like Salem. The Pines Staff of 1973 hope they have in some way aided you, the students and faculty, in preserving those memorable moments within the following pages of the final Pines, We, the Pines Staff, present the 1973 Pines, A Look. . . At Student Life 10 Salem High will never die as long as one of you remember it, The Seniors will go on to higher education, places of employment, and families. Underclassmen will go to Freedom High. Wherever you go and whatever you do Salem High will be remembered, Let's hope that we have more memories on the plus side than the minus, Each of you represent Salem whether your plans include higher education, or en- rollment in Freedom High. Good-bye and may God bless each of you, Sincerely , L. A. Horton Throughout the years the dedication of The Pines has been very meaningful to the students and to the faculty, especially to that special someone who receives dedication, Because this is our last year and because so many people have helped us, we found it difficult to dedicate this annual to just one person, Therefore, in appreciation, we, the Pines Staff dedicate the Ji 3 spines tome. 11 . . . It seems only fitting that in this, the last edition of The Pines, we should go back and take a look at how it began. Before Salem High School was built, the students from Salem, Mull, and Pilot Mountain elementary schools had to finish their education at Morganton High School. At this time the county did not provide transportation for these students to the high school; they either found a way themselves or did not go at all. Students who could not furnish transportation for themselves to the High School . irs. There was definitely a need for a high school in this area to give these students an opportunity to attend high school. The Board of Education met and realized that a high school was necessary. Salem was chosen as the building site primarily because the area had more children that could walk to school, saving money on bus transportation costs. We hope that this substitution will be meaningful to you and remembered in years to come. Desiderata G placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. I you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Eajoy your achievements as well as your plans. Weep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of times. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisey confusion of life keep peace with your soul. Wit all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Srrive to be happy. 267 School Song We're loyal to you Salem High We'll ever be true Salem High We know that you stand for the best in the land We are counting on you Salem High Rah! Rah! Our fight is for you, black and gold We'll gather them all in our fold Our Tigers will roar so loudly Win, lose or draw so proudly We hail our school Salem High!
