Class History I hesitated when I was asked to prepare this picture of the class of 1953 for your inspection, I was not an artist and everyone knew it. Any of my teachers would tell you that Iwas never especially proficient in drawing anything--except attention--and could never paint anything suc- cessfully--not even my own face, Besides, the class of 1953 is a very lively subject for even an expert to attempt to sketch. There are never any of them twice alike, nor apt to be found twice in the same place or position, But it seems my fate to be expected to hold the mirror up be- fore these forty-three boys and girls who have been my classmates for four years. I can only paint them in such words as appear tome to ex- press them as I see them, This, then, dear friends, is the Class of We aie We started our freshman year as a band of seventy -one fearful freshmen from which we chose the following officers: President, Lorene Dobson; Vice-President, Norma Jean Hull; Secretary, Doris Ann McGhee; Treasurer, R. C. Davis. One of the most interesting events) of that year was our trip to the Planetarium at Chapel Hill. By the next fall, we became better acquainted with the upper class- men, thereby gaining the confidence we so badly needed. That year we elected the following officers: President, Bobby Joe Huffman; Vice- President, Hal Rayburn; Secretary, Lena Watts; Treasurer, Doris Ann McGhee, Probably the high light of that year was our trip to Raleigh. Our third year was indeed the harvest, although some who started out with us dropped out along the way. That was the year that we as freshmen had looked forward to, the year of ‘‘The Junior-Senior,’’ We elected as President, Bobby Joe Huffman; Vice-President, Lorene Dobson; Secretary, Marjorie Cooper; and Treasurer, Lena Watts. I must hurry on to tell you about the last year, our Senior Year. We started out with forty-three members and elected the following officers: President, Beulah Huffman; Vice-President, Billy Denton; Secretary, Lena Watts; Treasurer, Norma Jean Hull, This year was one of hard labor because it was up to us to publish the annual and to numerous other tasks, such as producing the Senior Variety show and presenting the Senior Play, ‘ Comin’ Around the Mountain.’’ We did, however, look forwardto our trip to Washington, D. C, So far we have come together, hand in hand, and have been looking forward to graduation as a happy time, forgetting that it would mean parting. Now we are suddenly forced to remember this, and it makes us sad, But we shall always remember our four happy years at Salem High. Lorene Dobson, Historian
