CLASS PROPHECY It all started when the phone rang and I answered it to have an old girl friend invite me out for the evening. She happened to have two tickets to the drama, “The Play of Time.” We decided to attend since the characters were the Seniors of Salem High of ’51. It had been ten years and not a single one had I seen. The first scene was North Carolina and there was Fritz Brittain at U.N.C. where he was famous for “pestering” his professors. Some one must like his pestering, he has been there for the last ten years. U.N.C. and Fritz also have a'new English teacher this year, Anne Walker. What’s this I hear? Wedding Bells! and there is Pauline Orders the bride and photographer, too. Oh! she just shot the groom. The next scene shows Eastern Air Lines new passenger route from Oak Hill to Salem, and the pilot is let me take another look—yes it is Leonard Johnson and the hostesses on the plane are Lena Williams and Pauline Prewitt. Now we come to the romantic scene between Jobie Pigsnort and Annabell Bullhead. And look who is acting the part of Jobie and Annabell—John Obie Carswell and Ann Duckworth. Lights down low and soft music, we next see The Grand Ole Opera, and Eva Franklin is the main attraction. It has been modernized with the famous opera singer Nancy Sparks. The next scene shows the Dance-a-jig Night Club which has recently been opened in Hollywood. Maxine Causby, is the star entertainer. Boy! is she a rug cutter. Elsie Miller works there too, slinging out (catch-if-you-can) chow. New York is the next attraction with a couple of scenes. First is Figure 8 Modeling Studio under the management of Charles Anderson. Working for him is Ann Olllis. Charles sure was good in figures at school. I guess he still knows them. On a billboard in front of the studio, I saw where the Yankees had signed up a new pitcher, Charlie Dale. Moving down to Washington, D. C., Ardie Houck is running for president of the U. S. She wants to be the first woman to tell the men to go jump and there is the new department store—Belk Broome and Turner—operated by Faye Turner of course. Next is a fashion show—but it isn’t clothes, its cars, sponsored by Rackel Huff’s Service Station. Owned and operated by Haskel Buff. On exhibit are some old cars he has collected. One a 39 Ford driven by Haskel Jr. Another is a 1947 Hudson (blue) driven by the famous football player from Notre Dame, Billy Lane. It is fourteen years old and still holds the remarkable record of making twenty-five miles going down hill. Going back to my home town, Morganton, the scene is at the local skating rink. Yes, there is Nick Dale as instructor for the fall abouts. He is also running for sheriff of Burke County and I see that his campaign manager, Thelma Shuping, has moved to Drexel and started farming. Drexel, that is where Eva B. Benton is preaching this week, and Landres Williams is taking dancing lessons. Our last scene is on Clyde Young Jr. who is happily married and coaching football at Llum High School and at home too. Six little boys could grow up to make a team all their own. The curtain comes down on a most enjoyable play—one my girl friend and I shall remember a long time. Grace Rayburn Class Prophet
