CLASS HISTORY It was four years ago on a bright sunny September morn in 1946, that we started out on this great adventurge of entering high school life. We were a little frightened but our fears melted into determination. The determination to win. We started out on our adventure at many different places, at Mull, Morganton, Glen Alpine and Salem. By the next fall, our Sophomore year, we moved into our modern High School and did we feel proud! We also received several students from Mull that year. Now as we look back, we realize we were truly an ideal “‘silly bunch of sophomores,” but we were very happy except for the Algebra “picnics” Mr. Walker was continually giving us. By our Junior year we felt that we “had made it.” We were at our peak and it proved to be a very successful and exciting year. We elected the following officers and sponsor to lead us that year: President, Clyde Young; Vice President, Haskel Buff; Secretary, Grace Rayburn; Treasurer, Anne Walker; Sponsor, Mrs. Yount. But unfotunately that year we lost several members of our class. During this year we gave the Seniors a banquet. The banquet all Freshmen dream of ‘“The Junior-Senior.” To us it was a very important event. But we must hurry on because I want to tell you about our “crowning year,” our Senior year, and it was full of activity and excitement. We were small in number, just twenty five on roll. Our class officers this years were: President, Faye Turner; Vice President, Anne Walker; Secretary, Grace Rayburn; Treasurer, Thelma Shuping; Spon- sors were Miss Harris and Mr. Orr. But we were still clinging to the determination to win and we have. We were quite busy; we published our annual and the school paper each month plus numerous other tasks. Now as we approach our award we have been dreaming and working for, during the past four years, we feel a pang of sadness as we realize that our goal has been attained and our precious days are over at Salem. It’s been a long, hard journey, there were many days of work, worry, and maybe a few tears shed and although we griped and grouched some days, we have truly enjoyed it, because it was not all work. There were also many happy days spent in pleasure. There were the parties, dances, ballgames, movies and clubs to break the monotony. There is a feeling of sadness in our hearts as we reach for our diplomas and we realize that this pleasant period of our lives is over. We have formed many ties which now must be broken, bringing tears to our eyes and lumps to our throats. But with a successful career behind us we can look forward to the future with hope and con- fidence. We shall always remember the moment we clutch our diplomas and mar h down those steps for the last time and say good-bye to the old familiar scenes which we have held near and dear to our hearts these last four years at Salem. But as the great clock of time marches on nothing will ever erase from our minds these happy memo- ries. This is truly our day of achievement, excitement, realization, our day of victory and promise of tomorrow. Thelma Shuping Historian
