They were Elbert Morris, the noted engineer, Bill Brown, the widely known humorist, and Frank Martin, the prominent gun manufacturer. As these great men sat at their ease they were talking about a story that had appeared in the Lyon in 1926, entitled, A Trip to Mars. They began to talk about how they would do if they were to want to go to Mars. At first jestingly, but after awhile seriously. 'X'Vhen they disbanded that night they had decided to try the trip. Frank was to make a gun half a mile long, Bill was to make a shell weighing two hundred thousand pounds, and Elbert was to figure out how fast they would have to go, how much powder they would need and the exact time for their departure. For the next hve years men labored to make the cannon, which g i My was to be built at Salem. At last everything was ready. At three and one-fourth seconds after half past three of November twenty-third, the huge shell, bearing the three men, started for Mars. I l The trip was uneventful with the exception of one time when they is l 1 1 glanced off a falling star. This so changed their course that they would g l have never reached their destination if Frank had not exploded a l l rocket at one end of the shell, which brought them back in their true 2 l l course. 0 l In four days they landed on Mars. They were all delighted with li i l their trip except Bill who grumbled because they had landed on a ' ' j- mountain and would have to walk down. VVhen they reached the bot- ii i tom they were met by the King and Queen who had seen them afar ifhi . ,: off. They were just like the people on Earth except they were more 5 handsome. 2 For three years the adventurers dwelt on Mars. They never ceased WJ to wonder at the civilization of the people there, which was two thou- W ll' J sand years in advance of the one on Earth. The women had wings but lm the men did not, therefore the men had a hard time getting a wife. All the necessities of life grew on trees, causing their money, which was made of wood, to be of little value. The men had no intention to return to Earth. VVhy should they? VVeren't the girls far more beautiful than those on Earth? VVeren't there more luxuries? But Bill put an end to their hopes.
