Wdetaaq Standrng at the foot of the h1ll gazrng wtth fearful currous faces at the red brtck butldrng on that hrll and wondertng just how each one would frnd hrs place 1n tt was a group of stxty fwe youngsters on the mornrng of September 3 1951 Thrs adequately descnbes the class of 1956 57 comtng rnto the hrgh school for the ftrst trme srx years ago Everyone soon found that most of the storres that they had heard were false No one got thrown over the hrll and not one got paddled w1th an electrtc paddle The only thtng that remarned true was the story every srxth grader had heard about the terrlble tempers and the meanness of the teachers and the prrncrpal All satled breathlessly through seventh grade when the classes were statroned ln Mlss Prltchard s and Mr Stone s home rooms Wrth Davrd Ball as presrdent the class could brag of havtng the pre Chrtstmas assembly and a class party The next September found lads and lassres a ltttle taller but agam at the foot of the hrll lookmg at the red brrck burldtng By thrs ttme they had lost therr fear of the teachers but they were sttll a lrttle leery of Mr Sellers Home room teachers were Mr Goldchren and Mr Brtssey Now lt was ttme to go to Prttsburgh as Mr Goldchlen s scrence class Wlth Joe Davrs as presrdent the class had a class party and went to Crystal Lake the last day of school In nrnth grade a smaller group found rtself at the foot of the hrll Home room teachers were agarn Mrss Prrtchard and Mr Stone The president was Herb Wolford Actrvmes included a bake sale and a turkey raffle By the trme thrs hearty band were sophomores they had lost all fear of Mr Sellers fHe s really soft hearted after all Q Thrs year the home room teachers were Mrs Walls and Mr Matthey Led by Becky Holden everyone settled down to work for the Washxngton trip As sophomores the ambrtrous group sold pop candy and popcorn at the ball games Also there was a skatxng party a bake sale two class partles and the Thanksgrvrng assembly Iunrors at last! Drd they thlnk rt would never come' By thrs trme the class had been reduced to thtrty seven and one home room was enough Home room teacher was Mr Hall They were led by such able leaders as Becky Holden Ernestme Rlchards Althea Monroe and Ron Carder Eddre Bond Davrs was now vrce presrdent of the Student Councrl Now came the Juntor play and the banquet to worry about The play Swlng Fever came frrst Then came the Easter assembly and last but far from least the banquet and prom Jumors pard for the banquet whtch was held at the Salem Methodist Church wtth nmety srx present After the banquet everyone Jour neyed to Clarksburg to the V F W Hall for the prom Music was furnrshed by H1en1e Hammel At last after f1ve long years a small persrstent crew of the ones who entered were frnally rn top po s1t1on They went by the name of semors Therr senror year was one glorrous state of confusion most of the trme To every sentor s wonderment they were given a brand new teacher Mr Chrrstre to plague and drlve to rack and ru1n Led agarn by Becky Holden thrs crew started workrng 111 earnest for the Washtngton trrp Outstandrng of all therr act1v1t1es was the senror play the Chrrstmas assembly and Senlor Day The senror play was a change from the usual The Clutchrng Claw was a combrned murder mystery and comedy The group also saw George Davrs and Betty Robrnson crowned Cub and Cubbess of Salem Hlgh School And so on May 27 1957 at etght o clock rn the college audrtorrum those few left of the srxty frve that started walked across the stage and recexved that all tmportant drploma from one of the people who had gurded them for srx years thetr pnncrpal Mr Sellers , r , v , .
