A yearbook and its contents are usually based around a theme. Creating a theme that can be used throughout the book is no easy task. As you noticed on the cover and throughout the yearbook there are candy bars practically everywhere! The yearbook staff has chosen candy bars to represent the various features in your book. For instance, who hasn't sneaked a candy bar into class and eaten it because you didn't have something earlier? Or haven't you casually walked over and slipped forty cents into the vending machine at lunch or study hall? We also feel life at Salem High can be pretty sweet when compared to other places. Besides, it was a lot of fun to eat the candy bars we used for pictures when we were done with them. We hope you will enjoy it as much as you do your candy. We've captured this year with copy and pictures for your enjoyment. We sincerely hope that it will give you years of pleasant memories. We have included some bite-size samples on page 5 to whet your appetite. The 1985 Varsity Football Cats had a very successful season. It was the first time the Cats remained undefeat- ed and untied in regular season play. Also, they won the first round of the state Play-offs for the first time. Besides the team's great success, several individuals were quite successful. Dave Meador became Salem's leading rusher and single season rusher leader. Mark Byars also had a good rushing season. Mike Berger and Andy Garden completed excellent defensive seasons. All the players deserve praise for a good year. Salem's only loss was in the second round of Play-offs to Roxana 28-24. Coach Budde credited the success to great talent and desire for success. He also gave credit to the weight program The ‘85 Cats were led by coaches Doug Eblin. Bill Beavers. Dwight Daub. Mr. Morgan, who has been directing the program for 13years, says that next year he plans to have a longer amount of time devoted to intra- murals. He was pleased with the good participation this year. Mr. Morgan reported that basket- ball used to have more participants before girls' sports. Now most of the girls are on the basketball teams. Mixed volleyball has the most members with 240-250 individuals. Basketball has 180-200 participants. There's everything from handball to checkers. Mr. Morgan is always open for suggestions. If you have a sport you wish to play that isn't in the intramural line-up, talk to Mr. Morgan. Terry Goodin shoots a free throw as the others prepare for the rebound. Obviously, this season was very frustrating. “I will compliment the players, howev- er, on their resiliency. The easiest thing to do would have been to quit. A lot of people cannot face up to a challenge as great as the one put before our players. We are changing attitudes and see better results ahead We saw some positive aspects to this year. Certainly there is hope for the future, commented Coach Larimer. With several players returning next year, the Lady Cats are looking forward to improving their record. One of the highlights of the season was the Metro East Marching Festival held in O'Fallon. They received 1st in the large school division and Grand Champion over all bands. In all, 11 trophies were won that day. At the Apple Festival in Murphys- boro, the Marching Wildcats received 2nd in parade and 3rd in the field competition. They hosted the annual Little Egypt Festival Band Competi- tion, which involved 30 bands. They brought home a 5th place in class A bands in the Illini Marching Festival held at the University of Illinois. Champaign, and a 12th place rating in Illinois State Marching Competition (although Mr. Hezlep still insists the performance was much better than that.) Our Marching Wildcats enter- tained the crowds at all the home football games and followed our team all through the playoffs. At publication time the band still had several events scheduled. The Spring concert is planned for March 20, 1986 The Band plans to compete in the state contest on March 1 and April 19. Of course the big project of the year is the annual Band Variety Show to be held March 25th and 26th. It turned out great for the staff because they received first place in the clubs division. The newspaper changed several dif- ferent things this year. The staff gained experience in writing stories by learning new techniques. They were more orga- nized this year and profited by this. The staff redesigned the nameplate and changed the format of the paper. For the Christmas edition the staff used colored paper for the student ads and stories. The play was also performed for SCHS students during study halls earlier in the week. The tiny Russian village of Kulyenchikov, ac- cording to Simon's fable, has been under a curse of stupidity for200years. The curse can be lifted if Leon, the schoolmaster, can educate the townspeople in 24 hours or if the heroine, Sophia, marries Count Gregor. Of course the outcome is inevitable, but the SCHS students provided a delightful performance to reach it. In order to allow more students to be involved in the production, several roles were played by one person on Friday and another on Saturday. Slovitch was performed by Colin Teel on Friday and Glenn Phillips on Saturday. Lenya was played by Emily King and Annemieke Henson. Ginny McArthur and Kelly Johnson share the role of Sophia. Three other major roles were Mike Pape as Leon the schoolteacher, Jeff Williams as Count Gregor, and Greg Fairchild as Doctor Zubritsky. Time was saved by stopping in Williamsburg. Virginia before going on to Washington. The tourists were divided into two groups and toured all around Williamsburg. Wil- liamsburg is a small town which has been reconstructed to resemble the colonial days. There they learned the thrash- ing of wheat, making of candles, and other educational experiences. After all of those activities and shopping around, many of the group took advantage of the indoor pool which had been calling to them. Packing their bags they were off to the Big City of Washington. D C. There they toured the Air and Space Building. Ford's Theater, and the monuments in a memora- ble night tour. After touring, the group waited for the bus to be fixed for the second time so that they could get their lug- gage and some sleep. The next morning the trav- elers started out fresh, vigor- ous. and alive. The day includ- ed touring the Capitol and White House, listening to Mike Pape trying to get a letter to President Reagan, and visit- ing George Washington ’s home. The tired travelers showered their weary little bodies (some in hot water, some in cold) just to go out to eat and shop. Memorable experiences were had by all. Finally they made it back. Pizzas were ordered by many, while others helped them “chow down. ’’ Others called home to send love and settle the fears of their parents. FIRST ROW Tracy Hancock. Roma Littrell. Nita Newport left her hometown of Salem to begin her trip to Brazil. Nita was chosen as an exchange student representing our school. She is currently with her second host family. Nita commented that she likes this family better because they have girls in their family. In her first host family she was the only girl. When Nita arrived in Brazil she was greeted by her host family and their friends. At her new home, the family had an American flag flying in their yard. They had parties to introduce Nita to all of their friends. The school Nita attends has eight week sessions with two week breaks throughout the year. Her classes take a number of field trips. Nita's activities include giving speeches to Rotary Clubs and area schools. She is also learning Portuguese. Nita has commented that she knows the city of Chapeco almost as well as she knows Salem. Nita remarked “People are real friendly. Everybody knows I'm an exchange student and they are all friendly and nice to me. Her mother said If I would have had that opportunity when I was a teenager. I would have jumped at it, too. She feels that it is a great opportunity for Nita. Nita commented that if she could do it again she would. 156 Seniors Nita plans to return to Salem in April or May of 1986. She will graduate from SCHS in the spring of 1987. Pam Halfacre Class Gives Experience The Child Care work study program at Salem High School, headed by Mrs. Tinsley, has been a learning experi- ence for all. Senior girls who have completed two previous years of Child Care are eligible to apply for the program. After applying for the program, the girls are evaluated by their teachers. Then the final selection is made. The participants work three hours a day at a feeder school as teachers' aides. Some girls work the first three hours of school and the others work the last three hours. Fourth hour is spent in Child Care class at the high school. Seniors 157 Richard A. Fall '85 fashions were bright, full and alive. For Fall ‘85 there was a re-creation of old with insertion of new. The season had a special look created by asymmetrical styling of padded shoulders, oversized jackets, sweaters, blouses on top of full or form fitting trousers, stirrup pants, jeans, and skirts in every length. Fall '85 for men brought much the same in oversized and layered sweaters, shirts and jackets. A special interest for men was more awareness in styling of jeans from tight basics to full pleated baggies. The different fabrications added styles never before offered for men. We would like to thank KK's for providing fashions and advice. Models for our layout were: TOP LEFT - Roma Littrell and Gary Denton. TOP MIDDLE - Christy Pelan and Mike Pape. TOP RIGHT - Craig Boyles and Angie Morris. LEFT - Brent Smith and Tami Dunn. We appreciated their coopera- tion. Ladies and gentlemen, that was you in Fall Winter '85. Seniors 1S9 In Memory Sherry Short (March 8. 1968- June 26. 1985) Sherry, the daughter of Bert and Donna Short, would have been a senior at SCHS this year. She was the victim of a tragic drowning accident. Sherry leaves behind a son. Christo- pher Lee Short. Sherry will be sadly missed by her family and her friends at Salem High. THE ABIDING LOVE It singeth low In every heart. We hear it each and all A song of thoee who answer not. However we may call; They throng the silence of the breast We see them as of yore.- The kind, the brave, the true, the sweet. Who walk with us no more. After you are finished you toss the wrapper into the trash can and forget about it. We published this book so you would not forget about the 1985-86 school year. No one ever forgets the taste of smooth milk chocolate or sharp bitter- sweet chocolate. In this yearbook we hope we have captured both tastes. The book follows the year from the fresh start to the crumbled end.” As I write the final page I have mixed feelings of both happiness and sadness. I'm happy because the yearbook is finally finished. On the other hand I’m sad because the end of my senior year is nearing. Yet I know there are better things ahead. I am taking this final opportunity to thank students, faculty, and last but not least, the advertisers in the end of this book. Without you there wouldn't be a yearbook. The main people who deserve a really big THANK YOU are the SALEMARION staff and Ms. Frankland. Good luck to all the Seniors and next year's yearbook staff. This is my final good-bye to all my friends and teachers. Love, Tricia C. L. Engel Did you notice I am one of the first to sign your book? if V f .
