Therefore, we chose to use a photograph album as our theme. To aid this development we have used a script type copy for headlines and incorporated photo mounting corners on major division pages. Another feature is the use of color photos for those “special” events. We are proud of our publication and we hope you are too. It is our desire that in the future the 1985 SALEMARION will help to recapture those treasured moments of your high school days. 2 Outcomes We are proud of the events that occur during the school year. You, the student body and faculty, make all the bright, cheerful events at SCHS happen. Your time and effort put into making the prom an exciting night out and sponsoring such things as the Variety Show, the Dance Maraton, and the Madrigal Dinner are greatly appreciated. 3 a own “Be a Clown” was the theme for the 35th Annual Band Variety Show. The theme was carried out starting with the clown walk and ending with Emmett Kelly sweeping up the spotlight. The excitement began before the show started with band and choir members dressed as clowns entertaining the young and old. At 8:00 pm Ringmaster (band director) Hezlep blew the whistle and the show began. Students from throughout the school participated in the show. The acts ranged from the Curly Shuffle to Croix, performing “Rock and Roll Party in the Street. Randal Jett and Sharon Vlahovich were the emcees for the evening. During the show two awards were presented. The Kohrig award was presented to Dawn Striker. Tom Murray was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award. The show, which was pronounced a great success, was dedicated to the memory of Dr. and Mrs. McClain. Stephanie Williams is one of the clowns that entertained before the show. The clowns all sprint across the gym floor during the pre-show activities. 4 Variety Show Mr. Hezlep presents Tom Murray with the John Philip Sousa Award. On April 15, 1984, two busloads of students and chaperones left SCHS enroute to Washington D.C. The group arrived in Washington about 10:00 AM and began their three busy, fun-filled days in our nation’s capital. Led by Harold Anderson, the gorgeous tour guide, they saw such historic sites as the Smithsonian, the Capitol building, the White House, the Supreme Court Building, the Library of Congress, Arlington Cemetery, site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the eternal flame on John F. Kennedy’s grave. In addition the group was taken on a nighttime tour of the memorials that the students truly enjoyed. Leaving Washington D.C. behind, the group went to Williamsburg, Virginia and visited the restored colonial houses and shops. The students and chaperones then began the 18 hour trek back to Salem. When they arrived on April 20, they were all tired, but each one carried memories that will last a lifetime. TOP RIGHT: Juniors are on the streets of Washington D.C. It was once again sponsored by the Student Council. The dancers raised $9,927.37, well over their goal of $9,500.00. The proceeds benefitted the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. Music videos were provided for the first time. Instead of choosing one Most Spirited Dancer” for the entire 30 hours, the Student Council got together every three hours to pick a “Most Spirited Dancer.” They were awarded one of the “Top 10” albums. Those winning were Brian Evans, Denise Rankin, Belinda Rogers, Michelle Perry, Heather Waters, Jennifer Shook, Troy Brant, Tim Green, Howard Phillips, and Wes Fitzwater. Out of 111 dancers beginning the marathon, 23 completed the 30 hours. Congratulations to all who participated for making the 1984 Dance Marathon such a success. SCHS students showed their school spirit and support of the Wildcats by dressing up for Blue Day, Bandana Day, Dress-Up Day, and School Colors Day. Thursday night was the annual snake dance, led by the Marching Wildcats, to the bonfire and pep rally where the cheerleaders took over. Approximately 300 people attended the bonfire and heard represen- tatives from all of the fall sports programs. The Wildcats’ appreciation of the student body’s support was shown by the 21-0 victory over the Lawrenceville Indians. The highlight of the evening was Senior Jill Gardner being crowned 1984 Homecoming queen during the half-time celebration. Former Queen Christie Howard prepares to hand over the coveted crown to Jill Gardner. Dr. Raver shows his school spirit during the snake dance. The cheerleaders led the crowd in spirited cheers. Halloween Dance 17 deait and dantai V On the evenings of December 18th and 19th the S.C.H.S. Chamber Singers took part in a strange and unique happening. This unusual event, under the directon of G. Michael Register, took place on the stage and was witnessed by an estimated 130 people. It was the Madrigal Dinner, an old English dinner consisting of roast beef, flaming pudding, and wassail. Cast and audience were magically transported back to the 16th century for the evening. They were entertained by the music, songs, and a short play. An enchanted evening was had by all! However, it’s the people that make them happen. Twenty years from now you’ll be able to use your SALEMARION to identify the cute boy who sat next to you in English or the foxy girl who had a locker next to yours. We hope the next few pages will be of value to you when you recollect your high school days. 24 Senior m emone A Congratulations, Seniors! You’ve made it a long way! Your high school days are ones you will always remember. People are always asking, “What are you going to do after high school?” Some students are planning to attend college. Others plan to get a job or get married. Then there are those who just plan to take it easy for a while. Whatever you plan to do, we hope the ’85 SALEMARION will provide you with pleasant memories. Again, congratulations and good luck in the future. 25 5 AT6-«- Senior IflflemorieA The following is a Senior Class list including the activities of each student over the past four years. Mr. Jett and Miss Wikerson teach the basic accounting principles that every Senior should know. Years from now accounting graduates will still be heard mumbling the accounting equation; Assets = Liabilities + Capital,” which is constantly drilled into the unsuspecting Seniors’ minds. The calculators used only” for assignments are favorite toys for the accounting students. The adding machines are used to add everything from debits and credits to completing a trig, assignment. Seniors work hard to finish their accounting assignments (except David Beckham, who is too busy posing.) As the words echo down the hallways “We the People of the United States .. , the Senior class is being propelled through the history of our government and Constitution. Even though the United States Government works as a three branch system to make, enforce, and interpret the laws, the class is ruled by a monarch - the teacher. The monarchs, Mr. Bryant, Mrs. Eller, and Mrs. Baldridge strive to enrich our knowledge of the United States government. The royalty have been known to use such propaganda as “Current Events Jeopardy” to brain- wash the students into believing that U.S. government is exciting. Most Seniors don’t approve of coughing up an extra $2.00 merely to watch the little blue book go to waste. Seniors have declared this class unconstitutional. The windows are supposed to help save money by better insulating the school. The trials and tribulations of the windows began last year when the school board decided to replace the old windows. The windows were supposed to be installed by the time school started but numerous delays destroyed this deadline. Installation began at night after school started but it was soon evident that the task would take far too long done this way. Installation then began during school and as classes moved the sound of breaking glass became commonplace at the school. The temperature dropped outside while tempers heated up inside as the installation took much longer than expected and caused both inconvenience and annoyance. The new windows are an attractive addition to the school and their energy savings will be realized fully in the coming years. 66 Outdoor Watlt Most people think of math class as sitting in a classroom and working problems out on paper. Mr. Daniels' geometry class took working out practical application problems just a bit further. The class went outside and worked out distance problems by measuring the ground, not just drawing it on paper. This gave the class experience in how geometry can be used in day to day problems. Mr. Daniels' geometry students measure the ground to work out practical application projects. Driver’s Education is a required class for sophomores or juniors. It consists of thirty hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel experience. It is in these six hours that driver’s ed teachers age considerably. The first hour of behind the wheel is spent in parking lots and country roads and becoming accustomed to the car and the teacher’s radio station which is emitting music at least fifteen years old. The first in-town experience is usually memorable. The teachers usually take you on tours of their houses and whatever errands they need to run. Later, in highway driving, you visit such large towns as Odin, Kell, Dix, and Alma. The six hours are sometimes over too soon, but the memories of “Lock the door and fasten your seat belt” remain. It’s an eye test not a video game, comments Kendcll Walker. Registration for the 1984-85 school year was held on August 13, 14, and 15. Juniors and seniors arrived on Monday, sophomores braved the heat on Tuesday and the freshmen got lost on Wednesday. Next you got in line for your picture. Nip always had some cute quip like, “You might want to check your hair in the mirror.” The most painful experience was paying the book bill. The secretaries were armed with calculators to bill you correctly. Of course, the best part of registration was seeing everyone and discussing the latest gossip. Everyone is looking forward to going through it all again this summer. Well, one day I ended up feeling lower than a freshman. I was one of the very few seniors in Mr. Stein's 3rd hour study hall, and during the 3rd hour that day we had a storm drill. Our study hall was carefully instructed as to where we were supposed to go for the drill. Easy, right? That’s what I thought too. When the alarm sounded, we all got up and started moving down the hallway. By the time 1 reached the center stairs, I realized that no one from my study hall was in sight. I looked around, but I couldn't see very well 82 a Jjiiaiter because I'm slightly on the short side. I started to go back and look for those lost people, but only two or three people were still standing. I walked over to a row of lockers and sat down by every- one else. I asked around and found out that I was in the middle of Mr. Price’s sophomore English class. Of course, I blushed, but not many people realized I was not supposed to be there so I managed to survived. When we were allowed to stand up I limped (my feet were asleep) down the hallway and ran into some other study haliers, so I inconspicuously blended into the crowd. To this day, I still don’t know where to go if there’s a tornado during the 3rd hour. Mr. Bryant conscientiously takes roll at the drill. But you can always look back in your SALEMARION and see what the crazes were. Like when tails were in peoples' hair and when bandanas were worn around legs. Many of the styles were here for only a short while, but will never be forgotten. In these pages we hope we've captured some of the favorite places that you cruised to and some of the movies and records that were the highest on your list. Year after year, new fads and the “in things make up an array of things that everyone is “in to. Records and movies take up a portion of everyone’s life. “Van Halen”, and “Madonna” were two of the top artists of the year. Prince’s Purple Rain was also a favorite of many SCHS students. In the area of movies, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , and Beverly Hills Cop were favorites of many movie-goers. Ghostbusters” was the number one movie amoung Salem students. The time is 1985 and the electronic age has hit. Computers are becoming more and more important in daily life. Each year, the high school increases the amount of computers it owns and computer courses. Many people now own VCR’S so they can watch their favorite movies at home. Along with many of the dances held after football or basketball games, the Student Council also sponsored the Valentine Dance. This year, for the very first time, a Valentine King and Queen were chosen from the senior class. The Student Council will also be sponsoring the 10th annual Dance Marathon in March. Some other activities they sponsor include Christmas card deliveries, the Blood Drive, and the canned food drive, which was very successful. The Student Council also awards a $500.00 scholarship to a deserving senior. On the first Friday of each month they have Teacher Appreciation Day and provide treats for the teachers in the lounges. Mr. Cone, along with Mr. Marks are the sponsors of the Salem Chapter of the FFA. 33Jl 1984 - 85 The 1984-85 membership of the Salem Chapter Future Farmers of America is 100. The membership consists of students enrolled in vocational agricultural classes with an interest in an agriculture related career. Highlights for this year included Lisa Morgan receiving the American Farmer Degree, the highest degree available in the FFA program. Lisa is the eleventh member in our 55 year chapter history to receive this award. The grain judging team won seventh in the state with Kurt Beer tying for fourth place in individual judging. The livestock team was fifth and the dairy judging team was seventh in the state. The parliamentary procedure team won in sectional competition and participated in the District contest at Southern Illinois University. Each year the Salem FFA Chapter attends the National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. This year the Chapter was recognized as a National Gold Emblem Chapter and a silver emblem BODC winner. The Chapter attempts to participate in activities that are of special interest to the FFA members. This year the Chapter participated in every FFA competition available. The activities are designed to motivate Chapter members to study and learn skills in their interest area. The end result hopefully will be of benefit to the membership as they select an agricultural related career. Animals from all FFA members are part of the barnyard zoo. Students are allowed to visit the zoo during study halls and free periods. FFA 121 The crowd watches as Dan Telford tries to milk the cow in the milking contest. Green jackets with the prominent scarlet and green letter on them symbolize both membership in the S” Club and personal athletic achievements. This year the club formed a committee to standardize the letter jacket. The purpose of this is to draw attention to the athletes and give them the recognition which they deserve. The group has also planned other activities such as selling programs during the Salem Invitational Tournament and a trip at the end of the year. The active membership of the club has increased every year. This club brings all of the sports and their participants closer which makes our sports programs stronger than ever. Everyone listens intently to what is being said. “S” Club 123 J flew CM 3, The Activist Club was a new club organized this year at S.C.H.S. Mr. Bryant is the sponsor. The club deals with problems on the national and world levels. Club members are concerned about these problems and want to find solutions to them and offer suggestions for dealing with them. Since 1984 was a Presidential election year, the Activist Club set up a mock election for November 6. A total of 451 people registered to vote (approximately 45 % of the students). Fifty nine % of the registered seniors, 58% of the juniors, 53% of the sophomores, and 57% of the freshmen showed up to vote. When the votes were counted Republicans were obviously the favorites. During the lunch hour on January 15, 1985, the club sponsored a seminar on the problems of North Africa. Mr. Raymer gave a basic overview of the continent and its food shortages. The club also collected money for Oxfam to aid starving Ethiopians. FIRST ROW: Jim Beasley, Lena Barrett, Jayma Branch, Julie Albright. SATURDAY MORNING - The Marching Wildcats are on three yellow school buses traveling to a competition. Week-long band camp, long bus rides, grumpy chaperones, lousy food - this is all part of being a member of the Marching Wildcats. The band spends long hours of practice in preparation for the many competitions they attend throughout the state. Among these are The Old King Coal Festival, Apple Festival, and the University of Illinois and Illinois State University marching competitions. The First weekend in October the band hosts the Little Egypt Festival Marching Band Competition which bands from all over Southern Illinois attend. It is the fourth largest competition in the state. In addition the band performs at half-time of the home varsity football games. After the marching season the band moves inside for concert season. Although the concert band is not as visible as the marching band, they are as active. The band has scheduled a concert on February 26 and plans to attend IHSA Organizational Contest in the spring. In April the 36th Annual Band Variety Show is scheduled. It is an event enjoyed by the entire community. Pep Band, which performs at home varsity basketball games, and Jazz Band are also integral parts of the concert band. Band may take a lot of work, but according to the large enrollment of 123 members it must be worth the time and effort. The Marching Wildcats compete at the University of Illinois. Sports are an important part of the school year at SCHS. Approximately 240 boys and 110 girls participate in the programs each year. We realize the tremendous amount of dedication this requires. We are proud of your many accomplishments. In the past year these have included the conference championship for Sophomore Boys' Track, Cross Country and Golf. The Golf and Volleyball teams also captured regional titles and Cross Country placed first in the sectionals. The high light of the year was playing in the football state play-offs. Our athletic programs and athletes are something which SCHS can be proud of. 135 a onna Sreak Wy Stride Last spring the girls' track team, under the supervision of Coaches Suzanne Henry and Melissa Wollin, improved their previous year's record. Their overall success is attributed to their unselfish attitudes. “I have coached teams that were as successful in won-loss as these guys, but I have never coached a group that was so unselfish,” stated Coach Phillips. “Depth provided another major factor in our tremendous season. We were able to play several people in key positions and consistently had 15 to 17 players on the field.” “It was certainly a pleasure to coach this team. They left me with some tremendous memories.” The Cats’ football looks good for the next couple of years. It was very difficult to put this year’s yearbook into a workable theme. We wanted this to be a memorable yearbook. We thought a yearbook should capture moments that a school year provides. There was one major change in the school's appearance this year. The new windows gave the school a fresh appearance. We have included the before and after pictures on the title page and this page. 1 would like to take this time to thank this year's staff for their work and time put into producing a good yearbook. I would like to especially thank Teresa Wilson (Bus. Man.), Don Dowds (Asst. Ed.) and Miss Sharon Frankland for their extra time spent on making this a great publication. Also, thanks to all the people who submitted photos, and especially to Nip Parsons. This year's SALEM ARION staff hopes you enjoy your 1985 yearbook. 224
