fu Levine Mem cry The 1983-98d SALLMATiCN Staff proudly dedicates this volume of the SALLMACMCN to the memory of Terry and Teeny McClain. Tftc bu Salem Community High School and the community of Salem were saddened by the deaths of Dr. Kerry McClain and his wife Peggy on March 27, 1984. The couple died instantly in a car-train collision in Odin, Illinois on that evening. Dr. McClain had been the principal of SCHS for 17 years. Mr. and Mrs. McClain were both active in church and community affairs. It will take several people to fill their many positions. They will be sadly missed by relatives and their many friends. Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. It is not teaching the youth the shapes of letters and the tricks of numbers, and then leaving them to turn their arithmetic to roquery. and their literature to lust. It means, on the contrary, training them into the perfect exercise and kingly continence of their bodies and souls. It is a painful, continual and difficult work to be done by kindness, by watching, by warning, by percept, and by praise, but above all — by example.” John Ruskin We are thankful that Kerry and Peggy were our examples. Index . Closing Fast Times A t Fish When the yearbook staff began looking for possible themes for this year’s yearbook, it seemed like it would be a long year. We went from soap names to cereal box covers, but when movie names were mentioned things began to roll (if you will pardon the pun). After producing the theme, the next problem was to link it with the academic life at SCHS. We had to take into consideration everything from every day “Fast Times at Salem High” to more special events, such as “Prom Night,” to come up with “All the Right Stuff’ it takes to make a memorable yearbook. Publishing a memorable yearbook is similar to producing an award-winning movie. Funds are always hard to come by. Fortunately SCHS has many loyal advertisers. Deadlines are a constant nemesis. Photographs must be taken, developed, and printed. Copy must be written and rewritten. Pages must be designed. Finally, after editing and proofreading, the completed work is sent to the publisher. After approximately twelve long weeks, the long-awaited publication is distributed. In spite of a few critical reviews, the staff feels a sense of accomplishment. So sit back and relax and take a glimpse at the “Fast Times at Salem High.” Watching movies together can be exciting and fun. Of course, it depends on what you re watching! Inside the Camera is not the most interesting film. That’s obvious by this photo of the SALEMARION Staff. FIRST ROW: Sharon Vlahovich, Rhonda Maxey, Shari Mahon. The members of the National Honor Society are chosen each year from faculty recommendations of eligible students having a B average through their high school career and displaying characteristics of leadership. The initiation was held December 8, 1983 at the Marion County Savings and Loan, where each student received a gold pin and was formally inducted into the Society. On the basis of their ACT scores and class rank, SCHS was honored to have 10 students named Illinois State Scholars. This speaks very highly of the school and the students to have obtained this honor, gaining statewide recognition. THE JETS’ TEAMS Competition covers subject areas of biology chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering graphics, and English. All tests are multiple choice with 40 minutes allowed for each. Pocket calculators may be used when taking any of the tests. The competition offers competitive materials covering pre-college curriculum and allowing students to compete as teams against others. To become a member of the JETS at SCHS, a student is selected by faculty members Honors 9 on the basis of his ability. A typical day in the life of an SCHS student usually begins with walking to school or riding a bus. He or she then finds himself making major club decisions during activity hour on Tuesdays. First hour Shari Mahon finds herself falling asleep as she works diligently on the upcoming SALEMARION deadline. Many students enjoy chemistry and computer courses during the day, then let off some excess energy in PE class. School is not a continuous monotony of classes however. SCHS has everything from Consumer Management taste testing day to Intramurals at noon to the Red Cross Blood Drive to passing notes in the Media Center study hall. Students and teachers all agree that these things help make the day interesting, challenging, and a little more fun (bearable!). Aside from nailing people and wondering lazily “Where’s the beef?”, the SCHS student spends his time in a variety of activities after school. Interests govern whether he chooses to participate in sports, attend dances, join chorus or band, or simply spend time with friends. Many loyal SALEMARION staff members spend evenings outside of school working. As the viewer can see from the above photo, we had a close-knit staff this year. “A Day in the Life of an SCHS Student” might end with working at a part-time job, spending time with friends, or attempting to finish Algebra homework. Today the similarity between SCHS students’ lives are much alike. But tomorrow differences present themselves as graduation sends us our separate ways. This movie has been brought to you in black and white by the ’83 - ’84 SALEMARION staff. The names in this film have not been changed to protect the innocent. In order to be ready for college entrance and the workload those students are already beginning to prepare. Juniors take the A.C.T. and the P.S.A.T. Seniors can enroll in preparatory classes such as College Prep Writing. Students are also allowed excused college days to visit a college they may be interested in attending. All of these give seniors a head start on college. RIGHT AND ABOVE RIGHT: These seniors work hard at keeping up with Ms. Baryiske in College Prep Writing. Melinda Clopton Michelle Crain Tim A. First, during their sophomore year, they learn theory - why a part is in an engine, and what it’s purpose is. In Auto I, their junior year, they learn about brake repairs, electrical work and engine suspension. All of these things lead up to their senior year when they must find the problem with car engines and rebuild rusted and damaged parts of a car body. Open house is an evening set aside each year, when parents are invited to meet with the staff members at Salem High. During this time parents are able to talk individually with the teachers in order to get a broader aspect of a student’s academic day. This year’s Open House was November 17, 1983. Between the conferences the school administration provided a turkey dinner with all the trimmings for the visiting par- ents. For your viewing pleasure, the 1983-84 SALEMARION staff proudly presents this annual, “1984”. The endless hours put in during first hour and late nights, the true- blue dedication, and highly active imagina- tions were all combined to produce this tremen- dous edition. The all junior-senior staff held an educational seminar, directed by Bob Butler of Walsworth Publish- ing Company, in the spring and again in the fall. The SALEMAR- ION enters a variety of contests each year. The American Scholastic Press Association awarded the 83 book a second place honor. Cross Country takes time, training, and self discipline on the part of the coach and runners alike. As Coach Corrona has said many times, “Cross Country isn’t like basketball when you call a few friends, shoot a few baskets and have fun. It’s a test of the will, getting up and running every morning at 6:45 and after school til 6:00”. In Cross Country you can only better yourself through perseverance and the support of your fellow runners. Salem is very proud of the Cross Country team and the great job they did this past season, taking 24th in State, winning the NEC and having an overall score of 172 wins and 41 losses. The show brought past and present together with the annual presentation of the Kohrig Award, and for the first time, the John Philip Sousa Award. Both honors went to Barry Shook. Maude (Lynne Jones) and Gertie (Linda VanHorn) showed us their brand of country music (music?!?). 150 Variety Show Bill Cheetum got caught in an unusual situation by Coach Budde (Kirk Organ). Thirty-five students of the class of ’84 and eight chaperones traveled to Washing- ton D.C. by bus on Monday, March 28. The group arrived in Washington at approxima- tely 10:00 a.m. and started their busy tour at Ford’s Theatre and then across the street to the Peterson House where Lincoln was taken after he was shot. The tour guide showed many of the famous Washington sights, such as the National Archives, Supreme Court, Air and Space Museum, F.B.I. Building, Arlington National Ceme- tery, U.S. Capitol, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, White House, Mt. Vernon, and a night time tour of Washington that many students found breathtaking. On Wednesday the students were able to go to the Springfield Mall, the largest mall on the east coast, to shop and browse. Friday, before the group left, they saw the famous Smithsonian Institute and other nearby attractions. Each student will always carry a favorite memory from Washington D.C. KHTR kicked off the dance at 6 pm with the theme song by Joe Jackson, “Steppin’ Out.” The dancers were also treated this year with a 50 inch video screen supplied by Thomas Appliance that showed various videos throughout the evening. Cindy Blanton received a portable stereo for raising the most money. Todd Telford was awarded a portable cassette player for collecting the most money per hour. The following students participated the full 30 hours: Mindie Fry, Lara Smith, Mike Laudone, Tony Vaughn, Bard Hollenkamp, Terry Goodin, Mike Jones, Belinda Rogers, Toni Leckrone, Angie Morris, Tim Green, Cindie Fry, Tammy Porter, Gary Bolton, Jina Combs, Troy Brant, Lorene Phillips, Mitch Denzik, Pat Wyman, Rena Casconi, Darcey Hunley, Angie Butts, Christy Barnhart, Kelly Ross, Steve Farley, Carla Spence, Cindy Blanton, and Jeff Erwin. The dancers exceeded the last year’s total and broke the ’83 goal, by earning $8,783.58. The money was divided evenly and presented to the Red Cross and the Cancer Society. Efficient Mrs. Baldridge barks out another announcement. 154 Dance Marathon Michele Henne. Tricia Engel, Angie Alvia, and Paula Moyer check in their survival kits. Denise Rankin looks tired already and the marathon hasn’t even started! Obviously the marathon isn’t underway yet, these girls are too chipper! Rich Arnold and Charlotte Maxey tell jokes to relieve the tension. Dance Marathon 155 Year beck Throws a Party Every year the yearbook staff throws a signature party so that the students have time to get their yearbooks signed by friends and have some fun. The cafeteria is opened to all subscribers. The Student Council provides background music for the occasion. Each yearbook has to pass the tedious inspections of Deanna Atteberry and Sharon Collier, our inspector 12s. Anticipating a possible riot over the yearbooks. Ms. Frankland was hired as the official bouncer. Tina Thrash and Renee Patton show us some of their crazy antics while waiting to purchase plastic covers. 156 Yearbook Distribution Ccunt Pints at the Bleed Drive Isn’t that juat like Debbie Beckman, always lying down on the job? Larry Bolton receives some of the special care the nurses distributed at the drive. Salem Community High School once again held the annual blood drive. Though the thought of having a pint of your blood drained from your body would make some people think twice about giving blood, the drive has always had a tremendous turn out. After the blood is collected, it is then rushed to St. Louis where it is distributed among various hospitals where patients’ lives depend on it. For this reason we at Salem High commend those who have taken an hour of their time and given blood. American Red Cross Blood Drive 157 Paris by Night Junior and senior couples spend memorable hours at the '83 Prom. The refreshments provided for post prom must have been good! Prom ’83 Miles of lavendar, white, and light blue streamers, hundreds of various colored formals, hours of soft, romantic music, and an Eifel Tower are a few of the many memories left by the 1983 Prom. Troy Brant and Barbara Bartley emceed “Paris by Night” introducing such entertainment as Mary Taylor and David Hawkins singing “Just You and I”, Lori Barker and Gary Teel’s rendition of “Up Where We Belong”, and Dawn Striker’s presentation of “Come in from the Rain”. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of Prom Queen Tracey Harbin. This evening of record attendance was enjoyed by many and remembered by all. This year the dance took place on Saturday, September 16. Earlier in the week students showed off their school spirit by dressing up for Preppie Day, Punk Day, and Clone Day. Thursday night was the Snake Dance, led by the band, to the bonfire and pep rally in preparation for Friday’s Homecoming game, in which Salem was defeated by Red Hill, 6-13. During half-time of the game, senior Christie Howard was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1983. LEFT: Jill shows Julie some of the moves that made John Travolta famous. Kelly and David pose as sophisticated, but Mindy shows us her true self. Everyone is so busy trying to remember the dance step that no one has time to smile for the picture. After the traditional entrance of the Chamber Singers in costume, performances were given by the Salemaires and Chormen. After dinner the opera entitled, “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” took place. The opera starred Bobby Goosetree as Amahl, Ginny McArthur as the Mother, Carl Thomason as the Page, Randal Jett, Steven Jett, and Brian Higgerson as the Three Kings, and the Concert Choir as the Chorus of Shepherds. The story involved the three kings on their journey to see the Christ child as they spend one night along the journey with a poor widow and her crippled son. Due to the miracle of that special night and the love surrounding him, Amahl is able to walk at the conclusion of the story. The effects of the music and the outstanding performances of the actors sent shivers up the audiences spines and had to be the most fabulous Madrigal Dinner in history. Madrigal Dinner 167 White Christmas 168 “A White Christmas” was the theme for this year’s annual Christmas Dance held on December 3, 1983. Music was provided by TMA and the Hi-Tri club members provided refreshments and punch. There were more couples at this year’s dance than any previous year. Tradition Returns The Student Council once again sponsored the Valentine’s Dance. It was held on February 11, 1983. Music was provided by the Southern Illinois Sound and Light Show.
