Remembering . . . The early 1970’s were unsettled times, and at the close of the decade 43 to 50 Americans were still being held hostage at the American Embassy in Iran. But, the years in between were years of change, expansion, struggle, and triumph at SCHS and elsewhere in the world. Rock-and-Roll music was overtaken by disco, the styles ranged from mini to maxi to knee-length skirts, and from pastel colors to bright shades of red and purple in new combinations. Although some fads, clubs, and activities no longer exist at SCHS, some things such as the style of prom dresses, and the Homecoming snake dance will still be around for students to enjoy in the 1980's. They are an important part of SCHS. They are tradition. On a national level, 1970 was a year of struggle and protest. Women actively demanded equal rights, and college students on campuses across the country demonstrated against U.S. intervention in Cambodia. But, at SCHS, the only demonstrations held were pep assemblies, as school spirit hit an all-time high. The student body thought the football 'Cats were “kool , even with their record of three and six. 1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-1970-19701970-1970-1970-1970-1970-19 1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-1971-19 In 1971, a Twenty-sixth amendment to the Constitution gave eighteen-year-olds the right to vote, and an ambitious student council was busy planning a mock election for the Seniors. Also this year, the Student Council sponsored a Fall Festival in place of the traditional Homecoming. Other active groups were the Dramatics Club (its last year), the Latin Club, and the enthusiastic Athletic Supporters , who made a come back in 1978. SALEM WILDCAT FOOTBALL TEAM (71-72) Salem 6 9 Centralia Salem 20 0 Bridgeport Salem 26 6 Flora Salem 6 14 Fairfield Salem 13 8 Mt. Carmel Salem 8 21 Lawrenceville Salem 36 22 Olney Salem 19 8 Carmi Salem 28 22 Mt. Vernon Worldwide, 1972 was an exciting year for the Mun- ich Sapporo Olympics. American swimmer Mark Spitz captured seven gold medals for the U.S. and petite Russian gymnast, Olga Korbut, became the darling of Olympic crowds with her tremendous perfor- mances. At SCHS, our own athletes were successful, too. Both the football and baseball teams placed second in the Conference, and the Basket- ball Wildcats earned the Championship in the Salem Invitational Tournament. 1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-1972-19 1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-1973-19 1973 saw cease-fire agreements signed in Vietnam, but the American POW’S returned to find the biggest political scandal in history taking place, as the Watergate investigations began. On the SCHS campus a fashion revolution struck as bright plaids, turtlenecks, and lace-up boots came into style. Verlea Bercutt was crowned Homecoming Queen this year, and Michelle Flanigan reigned as Prom Queen. August 8. 1974, Richard Nixon resigned from the Presidency. As Vice-President Gerald Ford took office, he promised, Our long national nightmare is over. For the SCHS band, 1974 was a year of accomplishments. Long hours and careful planning went into the 25th Annual Variety Show, and the Marching Wildcats gave a tremendous half-time performance in a downpour at Busch Stadium, for which they received a standing ovation. 1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-1974-19 1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-1975-19 Women seemed to dominate the news in 1975. In September Patty Hears!, 21-year-old newspaper heiress, was apprehended nine- teen months after being kid- napped by Symionese Liberation Army terrorists. Another young women, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, received a sentence of life imprisonment after attempting to assassinate President Ford. And the Equal Rights Ammendment failed to pass despite spirited campaign by many supporters. But women were gaining equality at SCHS. For the first time female athletes received a chance to show their ability on girls' basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. Further traditional roles were broken as students and teachers swapped positions for a day. Seen on the Scene: mood rings, T-shirts, and the layered look. The year 1976 marked the 200th birthday of our country, and everyone joined in the celebration. Bicentennial coins, $2 bills, parades, and red, white, and blue were every where. SCHS students had the Spirit of 76 and a great deal of school spirit, also. This enthusiasm led our football Wildcats to a thrilling victory over our arch rivals — the Centralia Orphans. This event will surely stand out in the records for years to come. 1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-1976-19 1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-1977-19 With 1977 came a nationwide CB craze, a new President who called himself |immv, and the premiere of the most widely viewed show in television history - Roots”. On the music scene, everyone was coming down with Saturday Night Fever” as the Bee Gee's recorded hit after hit. Also this year, Americans were sad- dened by the deaths of favorite entertainers Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, and Elvis Presley. At SCHS good-byes were also said as Mr. Lance, Mr. Poole, Mr. Deason. Miss Wham, and Miss Stoafer. individuals who made lasting impressions on many lives, completed their last year of teaching. Also on campus, disco was forgotten for an evening as students jitter-bugged at the 50's Dance which was sponsored by the SALEMARION staff. Although the St. Louis Cardinal Football team failed to have a winning season in 1978, theSCHSgym was packed when the Cardinal All-Stars came to town to take on the Big Green Machine in a game of basketball. The Big Green Machine team, comprised of local basketball talent, was victorious over the Cardinal team in an exciting, fast-paced game. On a more academic level, six new teachers were added to the SCHS faculty in 1978 and on Career Interest Day students were given new insight to a variety of occupations in the workshops. Also this year, two big comebacks were made; the school play was presented again and the Athletic Supporters returned to promote school spirit. 1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-1978-19 1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-1979-19 As the decade drew to a close, approximately 50 Americans were still being held hostage in Iran, and no indication of their release had been made yet on the last day of the year. At SCHS, 1979 was a significant and prosperous year for almost everyone. Coach Koehler led the girls’ basketball team in a tremendously successful season, and new additions to the building contributed greatly to the progress being made in the athletic, industrial, business, and choral departments. 1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-19 1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980 1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-19 1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-1980-19801980-1980-19 The Decade Review-The Decade Review-The Decade Review-The Decade Review-The D Our lives have touched, briefly. It teaches him to see things as they are. to get right to the (joint, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant . . . One of these was the Pantomime Act which is in the upper left hand corner Beside the traditional Homecoming and Christmas activities, the S.C. also sponsored the Dance Marathon. Valentine Dance, and many other record dances This year the counci donated a memorial to Herbert B. Davis, a former English teacher, on the football field, which is depicted in the upper right hand comer. In doing this, they made a new school flag designed by Clyde Hall, which is in the lower left hand comer The coat of arms on the flag is split into four sections The top left section contains an open book and an atom representing academic studies. The top right section has a rolling pin and a sprouting seed to represent the vocational studies. In the lower left section, a half note and an eighth note represents the fine arts. The lower right section has an Olympic symbol and a winged foot for each of the fourteen school organizations. The green strip on the left of the flag stands for the faculty, the center red strip is for the student body and the green strip on the right represents the administration. The four large white stars in each comer symbolizes the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Ellen Williams The SALEMARION Staff spends hours putting your yearbook together. It takes more than picking out pictures and writing captions. The work actually begins one year before you get your copy of the book. A theme must be chosen, ideas must be discussed, and decisions must be made. Staff members sell advertising to area business people during the summer. We have approximately 184 patrons. Subscriptions must be sold in October to meet down payment schedules. Then the real work begins: pictures taken, people identified, names alphabetized, more pictures taken, pages designed two at a time . . . and the list goes on. Everything must be sent to the publisher exactly as we want it to appear in the book. The hardest task is waiting for the 875 books to be delivered to the school. It is our hope that you enjoy the 1980 edition of the SALEMARION. 98 Organizations Advisor ......... Editor .......... Activities Editor Sports Editor.... Business Editor O.R.C........... And those of us who were born in Wilburn. Massachusetts or Tucumcari, New Mexico or Abilene, Kansas know the truth of the American dream. The streets were not paved with gold, but there could be a chicken in every pot. two cars in every garage, the chance for every kid to become President. There was a time when the living was easier, and the flags waved freely, and when everybody loved a parade. The mainstreet was magic in America. And then the dream was no longer dreaming. Most of us began to see only what we called reality. We saw what existed, and some said the American dream had become a nightmare. Patriotism was old-fashioned, sentimentality was a laugh, nobody believed that the living was easy, unless you knew somebody, unless you had an angle. The news was depressing, the economy was off, leadership was suspect, understanding with the rest of the world, none too good. But none of those things was new to America. The various times in the history of the United States, our friends around the world have not been so friendly. Our economy has been off before. We've had our breadlines. And over the years we've voted the rascals out, sometimes we've voted new rascals in. But while times change, and values change, we seem to go on repeating ourselves, learning from our mistakes, making them over again. And still in spite of our new found reality, we’re still dreaming an American dream. A dream of freedom, free to be the people we want to be. to live as we will, to pursue the adventures in life which have meaning for us as individuals. Yes. the American dream is still a part of our thinking. A recent study of high school age students in this country reveals that most still believe today they can attain whatever goal they have in life if they're willing to work for it. and that thinking is no different that when it was when the flag was waved from every front porch. This country has achieved magnificent advances in science, in health, in technology - advances that are world respected. But it is really not the things Americans have done that makes this country the world leader it is. It is Americans themselves from the country, from the city, from every walk in life. It's corn-bred kids from Iowa, and D-trained kids in New York, each building on the American dream in his own personal way. Sure we’ve made our mistakes. Yes, we have our problems today, and today we, along with the rest of the world, know our streets are not paved with gold. But come back to this country. See it’s rocky shores again and know that the United States is more than power and performance. More than technical advances. The United States is people, still free to be. to live, to pursue and still free to dream. Taken from a speech by Jim Aglward, as recorded on RCA record The Spirit of America, a musical salute. 220 An American Dream Memorian ART ADAMS (|ULY 29. 1964-JUNE 4. 1979) Art was a most ambitious and energetic freshman agriculture student. He had a real thirst for agricultural knowledge. The memory of his enthusiasm for agriculture will continue to motivate his instructors and fellow students. DAVID WRIGHT (JANUARY 8. 1963-JUNE 29. 1979) David, an extremely talented sophomore, was active in Chamber Singers. Concert Choir, and Reader s Theatre. His interests were not confined to the arts ... he was also on the tennis team. David s unique enthusiasm for life is an inspiration for all of us. TONY TOMES (NOVEMBER 30. 1961-JANUARY 31. 1980) Tony transferred from Clarksville. Indiana to Sandoval and then to Salem during his sophomore year. He participated in French Club his sophomore year and played on both intramural volleyball and basketball teams. Tony's shyness and caring attitudes towards everyone will always be remembered by those who knew him best. REMEMBER: Remember me when I am gone away. Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand. Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann’d; Only remember me; you understand It will be late counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for awhile And afterwards remember, do not grieve; For the darkness and corruption leave a vestige of the thoughts that once I had. Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. Christina Georgina Rossetti Memorian 221 Editor’s Comment America, like S.C.H.S. has gone through another decade. We have lost old, made new. and maintained some basic traditions. The SALEMARION has also changed a considerable amount. Ten years ago we could not present the yearbook as it is presented this year. In spite of these changes all of the yearbooks have one thing in common . . . memories of each and every year have been protracted to the fullest. Serving as editor has been a unique and pleasurable experience. To publish a book of this magnitude requires many long hours by many people. First of all. I would like to pay a long overdue tribute to this year s staff. It has been a pleasure working with all of you. Thank you for your exceptional cooperation and dedication. I especially want to thank |anet Wheeler (Sports Editor). Stephen Nctemeyer (Activities Editor), and Kerry' Keele (Business Manager). These people helped accomplish all the goals formulated at the beginning of the year. This book portrays your hard work. Secondly, to Nip's Creative Photography. David Farley. Janet Snow, and many other photographers who spent long hours taking pictures that fill the pages of this book. To Clyde Hall for the fantastic artwork. Lori VanHorn and Dianne Sager for the original copy in our special decade section. Mr. Guthrie and the entire faculty and administration. To all of you, and to all the unsung contributors who quietly took on extra tasks that were needed to make this a success, my gratitude and thanks. Finally. I would like to thank Miss Frankland, who has been responsible for the publication of the SALEMARION the last 4 years. With her knowledge and guidance the yearbook has grown in quality each year. On behalf of the SALEMARION Staff I sincerely wish that you enjoy your 1980 yearbook. 223 )im Wisniewski Editor Dear Your friend. V ¥ mWA LSW( RTH IM'III ISIIINC COMPANY Mtli n INI MINW ■■ I'M
