We really appreciate the help they have given us in making this book a success. With as much trouble as we and the rest of the students at SCHS give them, it's a wonder they are able to be as patient as they are. The only trouble they gave us this year was getting them to sit still long enough to take their picture! When the Excedrin bottle ran low, they took time out for a short......... COFFEE BREAK! School Board The school board of District 600 has the immense job of governing our school system. The members work together in the continuing effort to improve S.C.H.S. They must be able to recognize various needs and to make decisions for the betterment of the school. 8 FACULTY Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime. —Longfel low JOHN TURLEY, JR. The Wildcats found the 1969 season to be one of many heartbreaks. In their first game of the season, the Wildcats were de- feated by a strong Centralia squad, 44-0. In their next game Salem suffered a loss at the hands of Bridgeport, 36-15. The team finally got rolling by defeating Flora, 27-21, at Flora. Fairfield was the Wildcat's next victim by a score of 21-16. In their Home- coming game an aroused Salem team played a hard-nosed game, but were defeated by a strong Mt. Carmel squad, 20-12. Salem next journeyed to Lawrencevi I le, where they suf- fered another tough defeat at the hands of the conference champions, 18-6. At home for their next game an improving Salem team was defeated, 30-13, by Olney. At the Carmi mud bowl Salem suf- fered what was possibly their hardest de- feat to accept, 8-6. Again at home for their final game of the season Salem played their best game and crushed an old rival, Mt. Vernon, 41-20. Coach Gary Brandt has a fine nucleus for next year's team, with most of their de- fensive unit and a few offensive players re- turning, hope is for a good season. With one of the best tackles in the conference,Wayne Williams, lost through graduation, Brandt will depend heavily on Donoho, Jones, Buff, Malan, and their outstanding end Jim Wil- hite to beef up the front line. With returning backs Phillipsand Smith, Brandt should have few worries in the backfield. MANAGERS: Alan Stevenson, Randy Hardcastle, Dennis Wilson, John Roddy, James Broom, not pictured. This year's attendance in Hi Tri has increased to about 250. With so many girls working toward Character, Friendship, Courtesy, Pleasure, and Success, there is bound to be a difference in the community. The Sophomore officers conducted the meetings in the months of November, 1969, and March, 1970. The Freshmen officers presided over the meetings of December, 1969, and April, 1970. Agriculture has its place in the school activities in the form of the Future Farmers of America. The purpose of this national organization is to develop better farms by training the boys to farm farms more intelligently and profitably. It also promotes the con- servation of wild life. This club is not all play for there are certain requirements each member must fulfill. Each boy must work on some agricultural project throughout the year keeping accurate records of it, until the fall, when the projects are taken to fairs, where they compete with those of other boys. Mr. Bob Cone is the club's sponsor. F.H.A. is a part of a national organization com- posed of girls who have taken at least one se- mester of home economics. The club has several money-making projects, such as bake sales, and the selling of candles, cards, and booklets. The club has several activities. They participate in a spring and fall rally. A square dance is held with the F.F.A. They also have a mother and daughter banquet. Mrs. Violet Rhodes and Mrs. Nesta Stewart are sponsors. F.H.A.
