Gramley Library .. Salem College Winston-Salem, NC 27108 L Salem College Winston-Salem, North Carolina 1 I may my heart always be open to little birds who are the secret of living whatever they sing is better than to know and if men should not hear them men are old. may my mind stroll about hungry and fearless and thirsty and supple and even if it ' s Sunday may i be wrong for whenever men are right there are not young. ■■Mr ammi i M and may myself do nothing usefully and love yourself so more than truly there ' s never been quite such a fool who could fail pulling all the sky over him with one smile. e.e. cummings ■A-Jt DEBBIE HARRELL For our past four years at Salem, the class of 1 988 has been very fortunate to have Debbie Harrell as our class sponsor and, more importantly, as our friend. Her enthusiasm and support in all of our class projects have been invaluable. Henry Adams once said : A teacher affects eternity ; he can never tell where his .influence stops in appreciation for all youVe done for us, the class of 1988 would like to dedicate this year ' s SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS to you Debbie STUDENT LIFE c ORI N V O C A T ENTATION The Grizzly Bear is huge and wild He has devoured the infant child. The infant child is unaware It has been eaten by the bear. A.E. Housman What might have been is an abstraction Remaining a perpetual possibility Only in a world of speculation What might have been and what has been Point to one end, which is always present. Footfalls echo in the memory Down the passage we did not take Towards the door we never opened into the rose-garden. T.S. Eliot Orientation represents the first opening of the doors of Salem to the incoming freshman. Through these doors they receive their first glimpse at the life they will lead for the next four years. The friends and experienc es they will have within these brick walls will be lasting. When the Class of 1991 passes through the doors of Salem for the last time they will consider those four years time well spent. All the pomp and circumstance that Salem can muster is presented at Opening Convocation. For the Freshman, Convocation marks the formal passing through the doors of Salem and the promise of the next four years.. For the Seniors it is a reflective pause in the doorway, with remembrances of Salem, before venturing out into the real world. Bitting does Convocation! ! (above) . The faculty and staff in full academic regalia (right ) . The freshmen and their parents get their first taste of the Refectory and of standing in line (upper left corner). Another freshman unloads for a great year. Dr. and Mrs. Litzenburg welcome Miller Vick and her parents (far right corner) . II t We needed to feel that feeling of friendship So we packed up our bags And went on a bust rip. Class of 1989 A bus ride to Wake Makes the grades go Down but In the most delightful way. Class of 1991 Sophomores in Paradise Being 21 would really be nice Heaven on earth and some Marlboro Lights We ' re just Sophomores in Paradise. Class of 1990 ...the young are lazy and preoccupied with themselves and will surely cause the downfall of the world as we know it. Archer. The Prodig al Daug hter Oh Lord won ' t you buy me a Bachelor ' s degree? My major requirements are trying to kill me .... Class of 1988 Salem ' s the place to be, where everybody knows your name and they ' re always glad you came. Wherever we go we ' ll always know, nothing remains the same. But Salem ' s a place where everybody knows your name. ? i 10 INTERCLUB VEGAS NIGHT Friday night, old gym- Margot Robinson, left, plays Vanna White at the Wheel of Fortune. Dr. Nohlgren and George McKnight wear funny hats and cut turkey for Thanksgiving, but Amy Cass takes over at Christmas dinner. Santa makes his visit before the Archways lead everyone out to the Christmas tree to sing carols. ••V i ' ' ■! c A N D L C E H R A I T N S R D T I M M A M S I N G V 1 22 Continuing the Christmas tradition at Salem, Seniors, with the help of Mrs. Litzenburg and Timothy, wrap and trim the Moravian candles for the candlelight service. The singing of Christmas carols, by the Chorale and the congregation, creates an atmosphere of holiday spirit. 23 What would we do at Salem without mixers? Bands like Heinsohn and Day and the Spongetones frequent Salem College functions-and so does George McKnight. 25 HIGHLIGHTS : the many faces of January January at Salem can be a very long, cold month. But, Mary Bryan Pierce, Kay Costen- bader, and Libby Brown somehow found a way to keep warm...?!? Or, if Santa was Good, you could go on a trip to Europe with Mr. Bourquin. Although, if you liked Beer, you would probably go to Germany with Herr Stiener. 26 ' O, % C ° o. e. tL:S ofe. ° ' ' ' ' - o .s ,o ' And if you just wanted to get a tan in January, you could participate in an Out ward Bound program-no toothpaste al- lowed, no toilets in sight, and strenuous physical exercise required. The boys are all part of this package deal. VALENTINES WEEKEND Gramley and Babcock girls and their dates enjoyed Friday night with Salem ' s favorite duo Heinsohn and Day; Saturday night they danced to the Grandeurs at Bermuda Run. 28 S£N10JI NiaHT LIP£ sophomore senior march 3,1988 R Lesson Learned The Hard Way mords by Strat Neiuitt Vou gaue me a vision Of what life was to be.
