They have risen from shy freshmen to confident seniors. They have learned from their academic education as well as their day-to-day living education. The seniors have survived their first Founder ' s Day and seen the name changed to Fall Fest. They have seen the inauguration of a new President at Salem. They have watched three classes before them prepare ' and graduate. Seniors have watched themselves prepare for graduation: term papers, lecture assemblies, exams, critiques, labs — they have succeeded in all. Their success, however, is not measured by grades, it is measured by what they have learned. And so now it is their turn to say good-bye as they have accomplished four major goals — their freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior years. But ' ' if ever you would leave us, how could it be in springtime? It takes lumps and learns from past mistakes. This describes the sophomores. Still a part of Salem ' s new blood, they had learned from their freshman year and had begun to feel the warmth of Salem as a home. Excited and organized, they began work on the Sophomore-Senior Banquet in August. Fund raising became a slogan for the Class of ' 82; Anticipating dances instead of wondering what they would be like- Conquering sophomore slump. This year was an exciting, learning experience. As they waved good-bye to their sister class, the seniors, they learned what it means to be a part of that special Salem tradition. 68 Abernathy, Flora Acker, Mary Amsbury, Laura Bacoate, Jacqueline Baird, Mary Baker, Susan Baldridge, Fordham Bass, Alisa 1 1 Becknell, Allison Bennett, Kathryn Bennick, Denise Berryman, Brenda 69 Biswell, Elizabeth Blanton, Barbara Brendle, Adelia Brooks, Linda Brooks, Patricia Brugh, Spencer Buice, Allison Caluori, Elizabeth Casstevens, Nancy Clark, Catherine Collins, Laura Connolly, Kaycee 70 Coudriet, Nancy Davis, Katie Dooley, Mitzi Craver, Catherine Davis, Laurie Ellington, Monica Credle, Jamie £ Davis, Margaret Elliott, Patricia Daley, Margaret Dial, Jennifer Cudy, Karen Fargason, Pamela Fleeman, Angeline Fox, Mary Foy, Jessica , France, Leigh Frederick, Elizabeth Furst, Deborah Gallimore, Suzanne Gentry, Joan Giersch, Van Gilliam, Grace Godwin, Lisa 72 Cray, Mary Guiles, Babbi Harris, Sarah Hasty, Elizabeth Hayes, Christian Heath, Cynthia Hill, Caroline Hoyle, Roberta 1 Huff, Alison tmeson, Nancyanne Ingram, Jennifer Jacumin, Emilie 73 d«f - - - lenkinson, Cecily Jones, Grace Kruea, Loree Lasley, Jennifer Lindenmuth, Polly Littleton, Missy Locke, Leslie Lovering, Virginia Luckhardt, Lucy Lynch, Lisa Mann, Melanie Matson, Keiko 74 Mattson, Kathy Mayer, Elizabeth McCall, Leslie McKee, Georgia I Miefert, Lisa Miller, Kate Modlin, Ruth Moliter, Nanette Moor, Patricia Moore, Gail Moore, Katherine Moorhead, Carol â– m 75 Murray, Lisa McMurria, Anne Newton, Julia Nolde, Allison Norris, Ann Page, Sarah Patterson, Ian Penland, Neia Potts, Allyson Purser, Rhonda Rea, Lisa Renn, Susan lb Rhodes, Margaret Richardson, Lee Robinette, Sarah Rogers, Mary £Y0 £ Ross, Elizabeth Rowan, Sherry Salapong, Jasminda Scott, Lauren © ft : 1 Secrest, Mary Simon, Sabrina Singletary, Julie Sloan, Cheryl 77 I fo p Stepp, Karen Tiffany, Susan Strickland, Lynne Taylor, Dorsey Tomlinson, Anne Tucker, Mercer Taylor, Elizabeth Tuggle, Mary Umbarger, Heidi Walker, Wynne Watts, Kent Wiegel, Mary 78 ©ffc Williams, Cynthia Williams, Tina Winburn, Karen Winston, Gwendolyn 79 â–  Liz Denton — Vice-President; Ellen Hamrick — Secretary; Kelly Corpening — President; Margaret Poindexter — Treasurer (Not Pictured) OUK 3UZUKS This past summer and fall has produced a spate of publicity about the perils of the future for small private colleges, said President Morrill at his inauguration. Nothing is guaranteed because our history stretches back 200 years, and nothing is lost because we are a small, independent liberal arts institution for women. Many of the days ahead will be tough . what we require beyond financing, beyond new programs, beyond good management, is an unshakable belief in ourselves and in the human importance of what we do and what we stand for. If we keep strong our sense of self-worth and self-confidence, then we shall do far more than survive. We shall excel. Among his accomplishments are more than one hundred orchestral and chamber works, two cantatas, and two operas. He has been the guest conductor for the Philadel- phia, Chicago, Houston Symphonies and orchestras throughout the world. For the past seven years, he has been director of youth and family concerts for the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He has toured with his own jazz and folklore group, performed at the Newport Jazz Festival, and was part of an historic concert with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, and Earl Hines in Cuba in May, 1977. At the request of the State Department, he has taken his music and personality to the people of five Latin American countries, the Mid- dle East and Pakistan. His program, Sound Stage, presented by P.B.S., in which he conducted the Chicago Symphony in his own Triple Concerto, won the 1978 Golden Palm Award. His film credits include the scores for The Subject Was Roses, Splendor in the Grass, andlhe Manchurian Can- didate. Music, to Amram, is the common culture of all people of the world. When I sat at a similar commencement ceremony on my graduation day I didn ' t have the faintest idea of what would come next. I had ap- proached the college curriculum the way you go at a Chinese restaurant menu — two from column A, one from column B — everything looked enticing and I wanted a taste of it all . . . The wonderful luxury of generaliza- tion, rather than specialization, opened, for me, the door to a world full of fascinating people and places. The degree you are given today can be your passport to — whatever you make it . . . As you leave your familiar setting here at Salem . . . you may be pondering the metaphysical question: Is there life after graduation ? That I can answer without hesitation. YES. A lot of it. A contemporary composer puts it this way: ' Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it. ' So . . . make it Bach or make it Rock — That ' s your decision — But play it, con brio. — Bonnie Angelo; London Bureau Chief Time-Life «5 x C 0KAT)UAZJOft V f v I B yfl w 1 V • They had just returned to their seats after receiving their degrees, and, as is the custom, President Richard L. Morrill asked the Salem College Bachelor of Arts degree candi- dates to rise a final time. He was about to make the pro- nouncement that would make yesterday ' s commence- ment official. They rose. And suddenly, from somewhere in the heavens high above Hahes Auditorium, came a can- non-like thunderclap that shook the graduates and their families and friends into a volley of laughter. ' He ' s on our side, ' Morrill jovially proclaimed. ' . . . or she is! More than a teacher of chemistry, George Mcknight is a teacher of concern and understanding. Mis devotion to his students is immeasurable. As our class advisor he has been supportive to both the entire class and to each individual member. He ' s a scholar, a leader, a counselor, a friend. George exemplifies the best of Salem ' s values and the quality of liberal arts education. Because of his dedication to Salem students, we dedicate the 1980 SIGHTS and INSIGHTS to him. The 1979-80 edition ot Sights and Insights is the archive of our year at Salem. It represents tradition and preserves memories through a pictorial illustration of past events. However, on a different level, this book represents hours of hard work striving to meet deadlines, to operate within the budget, to organize group and individual pictures, and to enhance the appeal of our book by varying techniques. I want to thank the members of my staff for all of their time and effort, and especially, for their quality performance in the publication of this yearbook. As I think back over the past year in particular and the past four years in general, I fondly remember moments spent with my friends and professors. These memories, however, are accompanied by thoughts of exams, term pa- pers, presentations and yearbook deadlines. During my Salem years, I tended to spend a great deal of time studying for exams, writing term papers, preparing for presentations, and meeting deadlines. These pressures frequently hindered my desire to develop closer relationships with my friends and to fully enjoy the opportunities afforded by the Salem Community. However, If I had my Salem life to live over, I ' d dare to make more mistakes next time. I ' d relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip. I would take fewer things seriously. I would take more chances. I would climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I would eat more ice-cream and less beans. I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I ' d have fewer imaginary ones. You see, I ' m one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day. Oh, I ' ve had my moments, and if I had to do it again, I would travel lighter than I have . . . I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry- go-rounds. I would pick more daisies. — Nadine Stair Marcia High 224 Winston-. Â
