A TW n j Every September a new door is opened at Salem College. Through this door enters a new class of freshmen, transfers, new faculty members, and returning students, faculty, and administration who have set their minds on making Salem a better place to live and to grow . . . 7 ■ But, in this growing process there is one thing not to be forgotten — the heritage of the past and the strong traditions which surround Salem as a liberal arts institution. Salem College is concerned with the future of education in relation to its past. The tradition of Salem ' s liberal arts education builds upon the strengths of its past while also looking toward the future. I 1 A J 1 I SIGHTS AND INSIGHTS staff and the Class of 1979 wish to honor Dr. Merrimon Cuninggim, President Salem Academy and College 1976-1979 A man of wisdom and experience who has spared no time or effort in his work to make Salem College the best it can be. He has led us and loved us, and shown us the honor of a certain aim. A Scholar, an administrator, a world traveler — he is the embodiment of the liberal arts education fostered by Salem. It is stated in the college catalogue: Salem has remained small, devoted to the liberal arts, and dedicated to the education of women. The emphasis at Salem is to afford students the best that liberal arts can provide. To understand what the human race has thought and done, to become more literate and articulate, to assume greater intellectual independence, to develop new competencies, and to explore new areas freely — these are the achievements of a liberal education. It is the purpose of the college to help each student to discover and develop her own integrity as a person and to prepare herself for a role of leadership in the world. Salem is a close-knit community, steeped in tradition. The most fundamental and integral tradition at Salem is its longstanding honor code. Ceremonial traditions are also of primary importance, along with strong faculty-student rapport, and student involvement. These traditions, both academic and social, lay the foundations for Salem. Nevertheless, the ceremonies were held and two prominent members of the Salem community were honored. President Cuninggim presented the second annual Kudos Awards to Dr. Dale Gramley and Miss Mary Weaver for their service and devotion to Salem. A two-term member of the Texas state legislature, she twice ran for Governor of Texas, reaching run-off elections. In 1972 she became the first woman nominated in the Democratic Party for Vice-President of the United States. In 1973-75 she served as Chairman of the National Women ' s Political Caucus. Rosabeth Moss Kanter is Professor of Sociology and Administrative Sciences at Yale University. She is also a partner in the organizational consulting firm, Goodmeasure. She is the recipient of many academic honors, including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. Her most recent book, Men and Women of the Corporation, received the 1978 C. We lugged our suitcases up the stairs to our rooms where we were greeted by our hall advisors. After a month of adjustments, Founder ' s Day was our first project as a class and our first attempt to unify the class. The day was met with mixed emotions as King Tut paraded into the Refectory. But, we realized that days like this brought our class closer together. By October everyone anxiously awaited Interclub, our first college dance weekend. We now felt like we belonged. All too soon exams came, but they quickly went as we prepared to leave for Christmas Vacation. At the same time we looked forward to January term and being able to see our new friends again. We had all heard about the fun times January held for students! January ended too soon and suddenly it was Freshman term paper time. What horrors! Finally, there was the uncertainity of F.I.T.S. No one knew when the sophomores would strike! Silently and swiftly they struck after spring break. All and all, our Freshman year was one of uncertainity, changes, and new growth. We now feel that we have become a part of Salem, and Salem has become a part of us. It felt great already to know the class members and see old friends, but the class was also anxiously awaiting to meet new friends. Founder ' s Day plans were started immediately; and after long hours of work, the famous black cardboard car puttered out on the field amidst a sea of pink bathing suits. The rest of the fall was devoted to studies and plans for the Sophomore-Senior banquet. Fund raising projects took up free time, for sophomores sold donuts, popcorn, t-shirts and Izod clothes to earn the money to give their sister class the Greatest Show on Earth. The banquet was definitely the best Salem has ever seen, and the surprise visit by Dr. Lazarus was the finishing touch to a wonderful, warm, and impressive night. But, of course, nothing could be too good for the Class of 1979. FITS, again held later in the year, was enjoyed by sophomores and freshmen alike. It started off with a long day of yelling, singing and sugarcake and two days later came to an end with a big party and fun for all. We sadly said goodbye to dear friends who will leave Salem but will remain forever with us in our hearts. Unofficially, a Junior ' s year begins in the summer. This summer the Class of 1980 dutifully contacted each and every one of the 158 upcoming freshmen — their sister class — to welcome them to Salem. In the flurry of activities the first two weeks of the school year, the juniors managed to continue the tradition of a Big Sis — Little Sis picnic. Those first few weeks of the school year were also filled with practices and preparations for Founder ' s Day on September 25, 1978. Choosing to do a western rendition of Oklahoma, the Class of ' 80 exemplified dedication to academics, the assets of the Old Salem community, as well as the pleasures and responsibilities of being a Salem student. Junior year also offered a unique opportunity for leadership within the hierarchy of major and minor offices available to the student body. Juniors held the positions of SGA Secretary and Treasurer, Secretary of Honor Council, SAC chairman, April Arts chairman and publications editors and assistant editors. The honor of being Chief Marshal and the seven marshals are also traditionally reserved for juniors. In addition, the Class of ' 80 was represented by four dorm presidents, members of all Student-Faculty committees, and members of numerous honor societies. Fortunately junior year is less hectic than any other year. The Class of ' 80 welcomed a year to recuperate from sophomore slump and to prepare for senior panic. During the fall, the junior bank account was well-padded by the returns from their Pappagallo sale. Christmas provided an excuse to have a party exclusively for the class. And the spring offered a time for contemplation as room drawings and cap and gown fittings assured ' the juniors that they soon would be seniors. The Class of ' 80, through all their endeavors, proved that they are willing to meet the challenge and reality of being a senior in the fall of next year. c I $ 6 Baggett.
