Vica-Pies.; Fran Field t V M To return to Salem as an upperclassman had its advan- tages, but the fact that almost one-haif of the junior class had tiansferred brought many obstacles to the remaining junior!;. TliesH juniors returned to face debts, an absense of an Interdorrn Chairman and approximately 170 fresh- men as little sisters. During the first class meeting. Dr. Lazarus voiced his encouragement for the class. During the first two weeks of school, the juniors sought cut their littlw sisters, welcomed them with presents and held a cookout for them. Throughout September, the ju- niors worked hard in order to perfect their Founder ' s Day plans. On Octobar 3, the juniors, Winnie-the-Pooh, and .pher Robin entertained the school. Their flashy tin shorts, yellow shirts and balloons brightened the day. Their .skit, a medley of songs, recapped their first •, ' n,iic ann r,r.- -.-tp, (heir hoDBS and aspirations for the next two. The major obstacle junioi acert this year was fln n cial After many suggestions and attempts, the sale of Salem cups finally helped to rid the junior class of t!i ■ debts. Spring rolled around and so did the Siege on Single Sisters. Tension was in the air on April 4, and blocks moved from dorm to dorm to be with their fr iends. After three years, the juniors realized that it is who you live with, not where you live. After a long and tedious day, and night, everj ' one was set, and Sisters, South, Bitting and Strong contained the rising seniors. They were drawn back to Salem by friend- ship, confident to join old friends and meet new ones . . . by an aura of knowledge and learning, confident to take on the responsibilities of upper level courses and of choosing majors ... by memories of good times, confi- dent to have many more good times known only to soph- omores. ' Twas the night before Founder ' s Day, and the sopho- more class, clad in nightgowns and tennis shoes, serenaded the campus in preparation for the next day. The class of ' 80 with Big Bird, Kermit and Oscar, in addi- tion to laughter, giggles and tears, found themselves in second place for overall competition. The day served not only to strengthen the ties among the classes but also to strengthen those within the sophomore class, helping to prepare them for the cooperation needed to create a suc- cessful Sophomore-Senior banquet. It was a cruise through the South Pacific that the soph- omores saluted their sister class, the class which had greeted them as freshmen little sisters. Thanks to suc- cessful fund-raising throughout the year, the sophomores were able to provide the seniors with a first class cruise. After celebrating by candlelight and champagne, the seniors said thank you to their little sisters with an after party. While the Sophomore-Senior banquet hon- ored old friendships, FITS week helped to build new ones. After battling to keep the tradition of FITS, the sopho- mores treated the freshmen class to a somewhat overdue Freshmen Introduction to Salem. The week began with an early morning reveille and continued with talent shows, a 50 ' s night, a picnic, and a mixer. While the weather dampened the activities, it didn ' t touch the spirits. Despite the inevitable sophomore slump, the class of ' 80 managed not only to survive classes but also to be- come involved in publications, panels and committees. Thus, with excitement, enthusiasm and confidence, the class of ' 80 will continue to be drawn back to Salem be- cause of its unlimited source of friendships, knowledge and good times. 184 aaooA Alexander. Arriving for ori- entation, they were easy to spot, for all had a wide-eyed look of wonder and excitement with visions of freedom. They adjusted quickly and learned the routines of college life. Founder ' s Day did much to unite the class, making the freshmen feel truly a part of Salem. Experiencing Salem traditions for the first time is a mark of the freshmen year, and they witnessed all of them from Thanksgiving dinner to Christmas festivities to the Sophomore-Senior ban- quet, with as much spirit and enthusiasm as any of the upperclassmen.
