Kem Minis and Zel Gilbert, Co-chairmen of Orientation Orientation 1975: this year, an effort to help freshmen not only find out where their meals were . . . but also where their minds were and why. For the Committee, Orientation was months of planning, and days of A.M. to A.M. work . . . and excitement. For the freshmen. Orientation meant days of total confusion and despair and eager anticipation. An effort was made this year to focus on Why a Woman ' s College? (and perhaps; Why ME at a Woman ' s College? ). The success of Orientation 1975? It can only be lueasured by the Class of 1979. ORIENTATION 1975 16 ■... Cindy Parker Class Chaiiinen A.M. 7:fH)— The Seniors take a noisv jog around campus and encounter memorable obstacles: fire extin- giii.shers and spider webs of string, com- pliments of .second floor Clewell and Babcock. 7:.30— Sisters Dorm hosts soiree for Seniors with strong stomachs. 9:00— Breakfast in the Refectory officially opens the day and allows a glimpse of what is still to come. 1 1 :00— Entrance onto the hockev field: ■79-Shades of the Wizuni of Oz-Tin Man and tlie courageless Lion included. 78— Sophomores sport orange and vellow- and no one rains on their parade. ' 77-Juniors take everyone out to the ball game. Joe DiMaggio would have been impressed. ' 76-The Greatest Seniors on Earth (thanks to Aggie Cowan) on parade in their Circus fea- turing Debbie Knight as one very hot elephant and E.A. McConnaughey with her now famous bear skin. P.M. 12:00-Lunch in the scjuare is followed by Dan- salems ' flashy, fleshy can-can routine, the Archways, and Mr. Magic. 1:45-Games on the hockey field highlight the day with Salem ' s rendition of the sack race, cate- pillar walk, demolition booby, doughnut eat- ing, etcetera. 7:00 Skits and songs: Freshmen lead the way fol- lowing their yellow .brick road with Soph- omores in hot pursuit on roller skates (sorry Ms. Mauger). On and off campus, courses offered not only a chance to learn hut also a chance to relax and have fun while learning. Some students chose to travel this vear-to California, the Virfjin Islands, England, and New Entjland. Others remained on campus and solved Puzzles, Games, and Problems, made beautiful music on the piano and organ, took care of their bodies in Aerobics and Nutrition, and broadened their communicative skills through sensitivity training. Upon leaving Salem, Dr. Chandler will become President of Scripps College in Claremont, California. Before coming to Salem Dr. Chandler was vice-president of the Danforth Foundation and had previously taught at Dartnioutli College and the University of California at Los Angeles. He holds a Ph.D. in theology and literature from the University of Chicago and is an ordained minister of the Episcopal Church. During his presidency. Chandler helped to insure the sta- bility of Salem financially and academicalh ' . This was done primarily through the creation of the third Centurv Fund. Otlier institutions established were the Special Edvication Center and the Lifespan Center for Women. Improvements were also made in the Development Ofhce and Salem ' s fi- nancial assistance program. Even though Dr. Chandler ' s stay has been short his work will have a great impact on on Salem College. Keeping in touch with our 200 year history Dr. Chandler has utilized his skills to keep us in touch with the fast pace of the 1970 ' s. More than that his friendliness and frankness led to a unique understanding between him and students. His office door was always open to hear students speak or protest. Respect- fully, he would listen and give his advice. Soiiieixille Acadoiiiic Dean, 1973-1976 On June 30. 1976, Janis Sdnieiville left her three year position as . cademic Dean of Salem College. Following her resignation, she returned to Pennsvlva- nia, her home state, in order to finish her Ph.D. dissertation. Before heeoniiiig .Acadenne Dean in 1973, Ms. Sonierville was an assistant in aeadeniie affairs at Salem and con- ducted a study for the Institute of Un- dergraduate Curricular Reform. Prior to her arrival at Salem she had held several related positions including as.sociate dean and director of planning at New- ton College in Newton, .Mas,sachu.setts. She had also served as assistant aca- demic dean at Newton, as director of the North Carolina Human Resoiu ' ce Development Program, and as assistant university planner at Ohio L ' ni ersit in . thens, Ohio. Ms. Somei-yille was activelv involved in committee work at Salem ha ing boosted changes in both the school ' s curriculum and in important academic policies. Interdisciplinarv majors, inde- pendent studies, night classes, and a re- novation of the Honor Societv were just a few of these changes. Salem is strong enough to e.xist with- out her because of her interest in the projects of botli the students and the facility. A .stronger link between the two has been built. Those of us who knew Dean Somerville and believed in what she did for us and for future stu- dents will miss her greath . M.A., P.D. Academic Dean, Salem College, 1943-1973 Professor of Classics, Emeritus My first year at Salem was Dean Hi.xson ' s last one, bnt I remember her well. Her office door was hardly ever closed. She always had time to talk, to advise, and to comfort. She was objective about courses, about majors, and about livins; in general. She had high standards and she expec- ted everyone else to have them too. At night it was not unusual to see every window in Main Mall dark except for Dean Hixson ' s office. That single light was a mute reminder of her dedication to Salem College. When she left Salem, a sen.se of dignity and grandeur left with her. Witli her death. Dean Hixson has become a part of the traditions of Salem College. It is ironic that the last class .she worked with is gradu- ating in the same year in which she died. We will take something precious with us from Salem which no class after us will have. Our own private memories of Dean Hixson are ours to keep and treasure, no matter how .small thev are. Catlierine Delbridge Barbara Behreiis Hills, B.A., M.A.. Ph.D. Associate Professor of Psychologij. 1960-1975 Barbara Belirens Hills was a member of the Salem College Faculty for fifteen years. Dvuing that time she demonstrated her excellence as teacher, scholar, administrator and friend. If her colleagues could find one word to describe her, it would be LOVE. Her world was a world of loving and caring. She not only taught her .students, but demonstrated her personal concern for each one of them. She loved her family and was a devoted wife and mother of three children. She cared about the community antl served it with distinction. As chief Psychologist for the Child Guidance Clinic, she attended to the needs of very special children. We, her academic colleagues, knew they were being treated by a clinical psychologist of both heart and head. Barbara Hills loved life. She shared that zest for living with her faniils, students, colleagues, and clients. It was as if she had been touched with a special gift to share with others. Anil this she did. We, her colleagu es, are saddened l)y her untimely death. The world is a bit poorer because Barbara Hills is no longer with us. On the other haiKl, the world is much richer becau.se she lived in it.
