e have seen her edge into our personalities — usually unnoticed until the end of the year. And often uninvited if we came here in search of curious anonymity. Gradually, she has thrust on us the oversize cloak of responsibility, making us grow to fit it with increasing ease and uncertainty.

Salem — w the first college established in North Carolina. It was founded in 1772 by the Moravians. ... That is part of her perpetual claim to distinction, and her participation in our lives is to our credit. We are al l parts of Salem — all five hundred and forty- five of us; but the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts.
