Can we accept and will we he accepted? fre glance admiringly at our new class rings. Now we helong. The secure year, old friends, familiar routine. Time to examine ourselves. What are we doing here? Excitement rises, diamonds sparkle. plans take formation, June approaches, and then. Classes What is our innocence. what is our guih? All are naked, none is safe. And whence is courage: The unanswered question, the resolute doubt, — dumbly calling, deafly listening — that in misfortune, even death, encourages others and in its defeat, stirs the soul to be strong? He sees deep and is glad, who accedes to mortality and in his imprisonment rises upon himself as ihe sea in a chasm, struggling to be free and unable to lie, in its surrendering finds it continuing. We are a unity: yet each speaks for a unique group. Whenever, wherever, a force hegins to move — an idea, an opinion, or a com])laint — we act as its target. We take that which has already liegun and give it recognition. ' Ilie woik of the Legislative Board changes with the minds of the students. It con- cerns students as they study, as they play, as they worship, as they eat, as they sleep, as they grow and progress. Each member acts as leader and follower. With eyes and ears, we perceive and direct. With hands raised, we say yes, and Salem moves forward. Members not [lirUirciI: Babs Bodine. Belly Billiard, Charlolte Curler. Robbin Causey, Sally Day. Judicial Board Being aware is the job of the Judicial Board. It is an awareness which, though not coveted, must remain constant. We cannot overlook; neither can we put aside. We must never for- get who we are, because we are constantly making decisions — decisions which have per- sonal honor as their basis. Our work is a con- tinuous practice in empathy, a perpetual growth toward a deeper understanding of the meaning of dignity. We do not gather to exploit punitive power. We work together because we have accepted a challenge: as we listen, to under- stand; as we tell, to reveal; as we inquire, to [je concerned. With each new situation comes a new challenge to seek out better ways of understanding. Hands of justice are firm and forceful; hands of understanding reach out gentlv — and guide. As leaders of orientation we look for ha])])iness, anticipation. Ijewilderment, and homesickness at the sing in Babcock. We enjoy L ' il Abner and the Club Carnival as much as they seem to. The week progresses in advising our group about the flurry of tests and meetings and in introducing them to Salem ' s Honor Tradition in handbook study. When upper-classmen arrive, we assure the freshmen that they will be the same next year. Orientation week ends and we take pride when our advisees pass their hand- book test, and smile to ourselves when they ac- (|uire their Salem beanies.
