Prologue Glass: a fusion of sand and lime— translucent or transparent; used in windows, mirrors, and art and to contain things. Glass: a confusion that needs inter- pretation—imaginary or real; also used as a symbol of our four years at Salem. I We first see in the glass a reflection. It  ourselves. We have come from Washington, and Apex and Florida, and Yad- kinville and Tennessee and Sao Paulo, each bringing something of herself. And th, ien we turn to look at others. We compar e our own image with what we see. Adding knee-high boots and perhaps a cable-knit sweater to our image, we looh again to the reflection. Thus we mold ourselves, until one day we walk downtown and, seeing our mirrored image in a store window, we are satisfied. ■en, suddenly, the glass that so firmly holds our studied image seems to shift. The surface is no longer smooth and the ' on ciacks and blurs. We see ourselves superimposed on the glass frame of a picture in II Th A lain Hall and the reflection is dis- torted. We are no longer sure. Appearances change. The cable-knit sweater is exchanged for black leotards and a copy of Camus ' L ' Etranger, or blu ejeans and a guitar, or alligator pumps and a fur hat. Quickly we look around. We do not know where we belong ■■■■HHB or which image belongs to us. We try to identify with all and none and yet to find onrselves. Ill We investigate. We experiment. And one day, p erhaps looking through the dusty window of the antique store, we notice th at the glass has changed again. It no longer reflects— even distortion— but has become a murky transparency. On the other side, not reflected, not confused, but barely visible, is an object, a tangible something. It is our first hint of what is beyond the glass. Because of, in spite of, our dai.y routine-frenzied fraternity parties, 8:30 lectures, and midnight talks-the object begins to take form. We are eager; we want to wipe the glass clean; we want to see clearly. I V The change is gradual but unceasing. The opaqueness of the glass disappears. The last speck of cinder and dust vanish. Looking out the dormitory window, we know, for the first time, the tree outside. We see a girl reading a letter as she walks slowly toward Clewe..; we see a little boy chase his sister around the water pump on their way home from school; we see half-grimy cars move slowly down Main Street and stop to let two girls run across to the Dairy Barn. We feel we are rea dy to step beyond the glass, to meet, face-to-face, what we see clearly from our side. We have seen, we have beg un to understand, we shall achieve Sights ... and Insights t ■ : J K - - •ifer , Jfe? .-. I - • Salba College Founded 1772 u (Ac JKvtaOian SeMfal Arts... Science... We judge, we are judged. 14 Freshman Class Left to right: Mary Vincent, vice-president; Nan James, treasurer; Ann McNeil, secretary. Barbara Hooten, President of the Freshman Class. We drive up in front of Clewell or Bab- cock the first day with set smiles, jittery parents, and eagerness. We anticipate the new life beginning now — a fresh start, we think. With the assurance of last spring ' s graduation speeches still on our minds, we determinedly approach the classroom and are overcome by our first assignment. All our letters begin, I ' m so busy . . . , and one day the faces in the photographs on our desks no longer look so familiar. During FITS we wear 15 beanie-bows and are treated well for a change. And, too soon we learn that roommates are not perfect. The days go slowly. We go home and are upset by the bareness of our rooms. We return, hugging each other after only a few days ' absence, actually glad to be back. We like the freedom and responsibility of be- ing college students— Salem girls— having our ideas challenged in and out of class. It isn ' t exactly what we had expected that first day, but we like it now. 1 m 4u a 1 JL„ I Freshman Feature Girls: Left to right: Jane Grimsley, Nan James. 16 First Row: Bebe Anderson, Jean Arm- field, Bonnie Jean Ayres, Mary Lynn Bladon, Peggy Booker, Lynda Bowling. We bestow bows and advice on our freshmen. We can now charge things in the bookstore without giving our names. Submersion in activities begins. We look 39 ahead and realize that two more years is a long time. We go to New York for hanksgiving, to a classmate ' s for semester br eak 3 and to Florida in the spring. We don ' t se e as many of our old friends when we go home. We get pinned and unpinned; we pierce our ears. We are often apathetic: we date the night before a quiz and live for the week-ends. Sights and Insights is a year at Salem put into photog- raphy and print. It is or- ganization and, at times, a laek of it. Sights and Insights is meetings on Wednesday at 5:15; and con- vincing students to sit in front of a photographer wear- ing only a towel. Our annual is theme-hunting, letters to Charlotte Engraving, and peo- ple not showing up for club pictures. We put up a front ol weariness and boredom and love the sympathy ol others; we complain, we pro- crastinate, we often run in- stead ol walk. Here we listen intently as a professor challenges our views on pop art. We sip our coffee as we ponder a student ' s thoughts on education abroad. e enthusiastically support a faculty member in his views on non- conformity; we staunchly defend our ideas on academic freedom. We subject it to intensive re-organization under the leadership of Beth and Mr. Jacobowsky, and we arrive at a solution: a new, more vital Music Club with emphasis on excellent programs of lectures and concerts. We re-design ourselves so as to contribute to the curriculum of our department, and to detract from the rigors of hours of practice, with topics chosen to present our field in its con- temp craiy reality as well as its classic past. We open our member- ship not only to our majors, but to all Salem students who appreci- ate music. v W ■ ■■■ V ■ 9 r lStal Beth Fordham, President of the Music Club. Contrast this with shirt-waist dresses at chapel on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These sym- bolize our double purpose. We have a down-to-earth re- sponsibility to do the some- times-unrewarding tasks such as recording chapel attend- ance; we have an obligation to maintain the high stand- ards set in Salem tradition; and, withal, we have the necessity of being exempla of Salem ' s welcome: poised and pleasant, graceful and femi- nine hostesses. We learned how to eat whale meat, say Skoal with a good Norwegian accent, and find our way around Oslo. We remember the things we did, but most of all we remember the people we met. Ever heard Swahili? We hadn ' t until we met Sim Mubako from Africa. And then there was Mr. K, not Khrushchev, but Lev Kapitonov, a history professor from Moscow. Of course we ' ll never foreget him. In fact we ' ll always remember Summer ' 63. Anyone looking for two foreign students? We ' re available. We feel proud when told that our standards meet those of Phi Beta Kappa, but wonder il we can con- tinue to measure up to those standards. We eat lobster with Dr. Gramley and the Salem Scholars, feeling a little guilt} - about being the only unorganized organiza- tion on campus, but ad- mitting that it is a nice change. 103 Order of the Scorpion Left to right: first ro-:e: Donna Raper, Frances Holton, Wendy McGlinn, Dottie Davis; second row: Feme Houser, .Dine Romig, Susanne Boone, Marty Richmond: third row: ' Fish Johnston, Frances Bailey, Marguerite Harris, Irene Rose. Simply, we try to serve Salem — in small, unnoticed, un - ostentatious ways that require no recog- nition from others. Our per- sonalities are diverse, but we have in common a love tor Salem and a wish to serve her, by observing, listening, helping in whatever ways we can. We wear a tiny gold- and-pearl pin as a reminder of the service we seek to give. Chosen for ' ' excellence in the field of history, we soon see our own inadequacies in in- terpreting the thoughts of those far more excellent than we. But we soon dis- cover that teacher and pupil meet as equals, and each can speak his mind freely. Three years at Salem, then apartments and we ' re (al- most) Med-Tecs on our own. Each Tuesday afternoon we gather to dis- cuss, argue, even shout at each other- sometimes with results, sometimes not. It is here that we realize that the offices we hold mean more than prestige; the} ' mean work. olunteer committees, votes, meetings become a large part of our lives, and we com- plain and wish for April so we can tell our successors how- much thev will have to do. Ill In the end, we do have a few accomplishments to our credit or discredit: we have honored our late President through a Memorial Book Fund, helped with Salem ' s first Symposium, tried in vain for a change in the calender, and voiced our protest against North Caro- lina ' s House Bill 1395. Set before the students as lead- ers, we realize that we in truth arc led by the students themselves and their ideas, which, in the end, is perhaps Student Government at its best. Frances I olton, Vice-Chairman; Ellen f rf in, Secretary. Our job is to interpret honor and make it relevant to us, and it is never easy. Students cither scorn or respect us, often forgetting that making honor work is as much their job as ours, perhaps more so. We are no better that the average Salem girl, but the role of judge is thrust upon us. Our concern must shift from What will others think? to What ' s best for her? , and we realize that H HH 113 perhaps we have grown up a little in the process. Monday afternoons find us wondering what lias gone wrong the preceeding week-end, but we find these meetings much pref- erable to our occasional ses- sions in the Trustee Room. The judgment of our peers and friends is seldom easy and never fun; but we choose to govern ourselves, and this is a part of it . . . an d at least we have learned from it. We participate in Field Day activities, judge FITS skits, attend plays, sell our services at the Y auction, and enjoy it all. More than this, we seek to administer, to mold the structure of Salem to fit the needs of the students, to sometimes prod the girls themselves into the necessary structure. We must be firm, having high stand- ards and hopes for Salem students, but trying to keep a personal interest in individuals, a sense of humor and awareness. ) •. Dale . The glass is a n symbol . . . one which signifies our change and development at Salem. Glass reflects or is tra n sparent only as the viewer is related to it. A small light placed on only the viewer ' s side of the glass produces a reflection ... as the light increases in scope, the image on the glass becomes hazy, until a blurred combination of reflection and actuality forms. Gradually, as the light encompasses the area beyond the glass, the glass becomes transparent; the objects on both sides, behind and beyond, become clear. So, too, does our comprehension increase. We first sec only images and reflections, because that is all we understand. Gradually, knowledge and interpretation give ever-increasing form to a blurry concept which begins to grow. The picture that we see shifts until w e no longer recognize it. We are faced with something new . . . something tangible . . . something real. The permanence of what i s con- fronts us, and we realize that the glass does not change. It is only our perspective which has changed. We sec through, as if there were no glass at all, |r flfec Administration p. 114 Advertisements p. 126 Board of Trustees p. 117 Bowman Gray Scholars p. 109 Choral Ensemble p. 50 Dansalems p. 49 Day Students p. 79 Directory p. 158 Faculty p. 118 Foreign Students p. 80 Freshman Class p. 14 Freshman Introduction to Salem p. 25 Home Economics Club p. 73 Honor Society p. 107 Humanities p. 76 International Relations Club. . .p. 75 I Represent Salem p. 26 Junior Class p. 62 Lablings p . 74 Marshals p . 78 May Court p . 29 May Day Committee p. 27 May Queen p . 28 Music Club p . 77 Order of the Scorpion p. 108 Orientation Committee ...p. 24 Oslo Scholars p. 80 Index Phi Alpha Theta p. 109 Pierrette Players p. 52 Senior Class p. 84 Sights and Insights p. 58 Sophomore Class p. 38 Student Government Association p. 110 Student National Education Association p. 72 The Salemite p. 56 The Literary Society p. 54 Who ' s Who p 1Q6 Women ' s Recreation Association p_ 4 Young Women ' s Christian Association p 51 1 • ' . . .
