Greetings from past students extended their best wishes for the year. The faculty surveyed the students and noticed a large block of new faces in the balcony and behind the first eight rows of mortar boards. ' 60-61 had begun. Big decisions in the first few iveeks: accepting and sign- ing the Honor Tradition, contemplating whether or not to send that letter home saving, I ' m homesick. I just don ' t understand. Where do I go from here? But by October, newness had disappeared: freshmen felt collegiate, although they knelt before seniors, and upperclassmen felt as though there had been no summer vacation. The leaves on the church were crimson; the weekend exodus for football games left the campus tranquil on Saturday afternoons. But it ivas still warm enough for one last barefooted run through the grass in front of Babcock or to sit behind Lehman drying hair. A feiv of the nature lovers suffered, though, and sniffled on their trek to the infirmary for a temperature-reading— pulse-taking diagnosis of aspirin and salt water gargle. Politics and the New Frontier raised everyone ' s blood pressure. Bus loads of Salemi tes left to hear Henry Cabot and to go all the way Lodge with LB] and JFK. Colquitt, Sally, and Aha Lu rode in the parade with Mother Rose, and Liz. Cathy, and Cynthia et al distributed Nixon banners at the shopping centers. Rain on Hal- loiveen night didn ' t discourage the Democratic ralh behind Republican headquarters. Where did th warm water come from that poured of] the roof during the speeches? TVs stayed on all night on election day, but the T die-hards finally admitted defeat. Opposing parties renewed friendships and campaign buttons were optimistically put away for four years. No one could believe it, but it was time for six weeks tests. Who had notes for the Saturday Eleanor Fishel, President ol l u Students classes ' What happened to all the interlinear translations of The Canterbury Tales ' ? Coffee, no-doze, and dex were consumed in enormous quantities as lights burned into th e wee. wee hours all over campus. Everyone could catch up on her sleep over Thanksgiving — a little more than a long weekend ; the activities between then and Christmas resembled a treadmill something to do or somewhere to go almost every night; studies had to be finessed until Christm as 11 Foreign Students, left to right: Ricki Eikendal, Meggi Schuetz -now really, who ever studied during Christmas? But those who wanted to make it hack- second semester did. by the grace of someone, for the confu- sion of registration and drop-add and procuring valuable books and lab manuals from Mr. Suavely. Some skirts were much tighter than they had been in the fall — of course it was due to the chicken shortbread and the smothered mystery meats in the refectory and not the toasted pound cake with hot fudge sauce at the Barn. And sitting the library all day working on a term paper didn ' t help the Spread either. The large sno ws 13 T 14 f last year stayed away, but the Friday and Saturday morning sleets were just enough to make everyone wonder if she would be able to get away or if he would be able to make it here. A few warm days brightened everyone ' s spirits and brought the dormies out for exci, cit- 4|; ■ !■ ' 3 ! $ Vifcwv ; ing events and male invaders from near and far on all kinds of week nights. Studying was not so difficult when it could be done outside — unlei ss someone or some- ing was distracting nearby. Sunny days and warm nights and popcorn at the drive-in and some type of demonstration to release pent-up tensions and weeks going by all too quickly. Tin seniors lined up in caps and gowns again— this time for closing chapel—could it be closing time so soon? Firsts, fast, fun: that was and this is SALEM ' 61. 16 - 17 DEDICATION i i ■ V. A Chevy whirls around the Square and into a slot in front of Main Hall just as the 8:30 bell rings. Questions are asked from the edge of the desk, and the classroom in the round investigates the social and cultural aspects of history. A dyed in the green democrat pauses to cook supper for a class, mail Christmas cards to students, send a cake on opening night, and back for stimu- lation prefaced by Actually or Well, quite frankly. . . . Provoking thought and being thought- ful: never too busy for a conference over coffee and never still for a moment— only twenty-four hours in a day. But always there— when and where needed — constantly meeting the challenge and challenging others.
