The sky dome cut with its compass in sunder A circle of sea from the darkened land — A circle of tremulous waste and wonder, O ' er which one groped with a childish hand. The true stars came to their stations in Heaven, The false stars shivered deep down in the sea, And the white crests went like monsters, driven By winds that never would let them be. And there, where the elements mingled and muttered, We stood, each man with a lone dumb heart, Full of the vastness that never was uttered By symbol of words or by echo of art. ' ' fitted perfectly into the green May Day Dell, dazzled with sunlight. Katharine King made a gracious and regal queen, of whom Salem was proud. The pale and floating dresses and the peaked caps of the ladies of the court charmed everyone. Not only was the pageant a gay and colorful one, but the semi-historic background delighted the imagination of the audience. Tyson, Warren, Moffit, Hayes, Dobbin, Vardell. President CHORAL ENSEMBLE The Choral Ensemble was organized in 1936 as a performing unit, developed from a class making an objective study of choral repertoire and interpretation, offered as a regular course in the School of Music. The personnel is composed of music majors and other college students admitted by examination. The purpose of the ensemble is to engender musical talent and to stimulate interest in vocal and choral music, off the campus as well as on. The Choral Ensemble participates in a diversified number of activities. This year it went on its second annual tour, giving concerts in Asheville, N. C, Bryson City, N. C, Atlanta, Ga., and at Davidson College. The Ensemble has given concerts in Win- ston-Salem at the different churches, for conventions, and as entertainment features. One of its more recent projects is radio and recording work. In addition to these interests, the Choral Ensemble makes a practice of sponsoring appearances of other musical organizations, such as the Michigan Little Symphony Orchestra and the David- son Glee Club, both of which it sponsored this year; and the University of North Carolina Symphony, which it sponsored last year. ATHLETICS PROSE • PROSE • PROSE • PROSE • PROSE Gerald Johnson and Howard Odum are among those North Carolinians who, in their research and writings, treat the ever-increasing problem of the South — Industrialization. J k k PB The Athletic Association, which sponsors all of the athletic functions at Salem, sent the hockey team to the North Carolina and Virginia hockey tournaments and also brought the Ail-American touring to our college this year. The Association had its annual mid-winter dance and entertained at the hockey and basketball banquets. Tour- naments brought the individual sports to a close — golf, tennis, archery, badminton, and swimming the most important. The Athletic Association attempts to promote an interest in all physical educa- tion activities, and the students attend the games and support their class teams with ardent fervor.
