'e ff' t Y N ,J Gil King, past president of the Salem College Student Federation and graduating business major, was judged winner of the 4th annual Carl C. Byers Public Speaking Contest. King was awarded the S50 prize for a speech of verbal pictures characterizing a student. To beastudent is to learn to love knowledge and desire truth . . . and may be symbolized in three ways: the student is a child, an artist and a traveler. In the child, learning is a quality of the soul, while the artist is taughtby truth and learns from the book of his own heart. The traveler is also a student whose teacher is nature and whose book is experience. 52
