'w ,pf Miss Genevieve Starcher, state direc- tor of teacher preparation and profes- sional standards, talks informally with Mrs. McCoy and Mr. Perry after a fac- ulty meeting in which she discussed teaching standards. As of July 1, 1961, Salem College became an official candidate for membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is so designated in the North Central Bulletin list- ing accredited institutions. A trial examination in October, 1960 was authorized and undertaken as a joint experiment by Salem and the North Central Association to provide an analysis of the college's present status and progress toward accreditation. Although the examinors were not required in this trial examination to make a recommendation for accreditation, the analysis of the total situation was that the college ought to be able to qualify for accreditation in the near future, if it can put faculty salaries at a respectable and competitive level and make certain other recommended improvements. Final application for full membership in the North CentralAssocation can be make July 1, if sufficient monetary backing is assured. Mr. Cutlip, Mrs. Curran and Hiss Hallam discuss progress being made on the self study being made in preparation for accreditation. eu
