'w ,pf Miss Genevieve Starcher, state direc- tor of teacher preparation and profes- sional standards, talks informally with Mrs. McCoy and Mr. Perry after a fac- ulty meeting in which she discussed teaching standards. As of July 1, 1961, Salem College became an official candidate for membership in the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is so designated in the North Central Bulletin list- ing accredited institutions. A trial examination in October, 1960 was authorized and undertaken as a joint experiment by Salem and the North Central Association to provide an analysis of the college's present status and progress toward accreditation. Although the examinors were not required in this trial examination to make a recommendation for accreditation, the analysis of the total situation was that the college ought to be able to qualify for accreditation in the near future, if it can put faculty salaries at a respectable and competitive level and make certain other recommended improvements. Final application for full membership in the North CentralAssocation can be make July 1, if sufficient monetary backing is assured. Mr. Cutlip, Mrs. Curran and Hiss Hallam discuss progress being made on the self study being made in preparation for accreditation. eu WE GROW Excavation begins as the first of many loads of earth is loaded from the building site. :sf 1 ,,- - , l , L Salem' s buildingprogram has brought about aradical change in the campus. SERVICE . . . President Hurley speaks in behalf of the small colleges of America. The Council for the Advancement of Small Colleges was founded April 1956, by President K. Duane Hurley, who has served as its president for six years. It was established in order to advance quality education by helping its members to do collectively many things which individually they could not do. Basically a service organi- zation, CASC has been composed on the average, of sixty colleges in about thirty states from Maine to Hawaii. Thirty-four of the original fifty-two colleges have received regional accreditation since the founding date. CASC in its six years has held national and regional meetings, and summer workshops. It provides a testing pro- gram, and various forms of consultation. Nu aa:?'.:!,'l l in Q: 01' flu. L. Dr. Hurley tells the student body of his successful CASC tour. King was awarded the S50 prize for a speech of verbal pictures characterizing a student. To beastudent is to learn to love knowledge and desire truth . . . and may be symbolized in three ways: the student is a child, an artist and a traveler. In the child, learning is a quality of the soul, while the artist is taughtby truth and learns from the book of his own heart. The traveler is also a student whose teacher is nature and whose book is experience. 52 President Hurley reports yearly progress. State, which finished with a 0-7 record, and failed to score from scrimmage all year, was never in the contest as Salem rang up a 21-0 halftime lead and coasted home with all 32 players seeing action. Salem's TDs were scored by Ron Gaudi on a four-yard run, Don Gilpin on a seven-yard dash, Joe Cowley on a nine-yard pass from Billy Connors, and Steve Rymasz onatwo-yard sprint. Tom Cuppett went 4-4 on PAT kicks. Other outstanding plays were a 50-yard run by Gilpin and a 30-yard Connors- to-Cowley pass. Statistically, S. C. outgained State 300 yards to 113, and hit 10-21 on passes, good for 176 yards. They punted five times for a 35 yard average per kick. Salem - 12 Concord - 13 The West Union athletic field was the scene of the first loss of the year as the visiting Moun- tain Lions cashed in one extra point on their way to victory. Despite the defeat, the Tigers held command throughout the game. The first half was s c o r el es s , but only fumbles and penalities stemmedthree Salem threats. In the second half Concord drew first blood as Wayne Hicks streaked 62 yards to score. Salem retaliated on a one- yard sneak by Billy Connors, then went ahead with 10 minutes left as Mr. Commors again moved the final yard. Both PAT kicks failed and when Concord's Hicks went two yards for the maroon and white's second score, Phil Hartman's kick doomed the Tigers who led in first downs 16-5, connected on seven of 11 passes for 132 yards but lost three vital fumbles. Salem - 14 Fairmont - 7 In the soup went a seven-year j inx along with Deacon Duvall's Falcons in a rain-dampened affair played at East-West Stadium in Fairmont. In beating Fairmont, the first time since 1954, the Tigers dominated a game featuring punts and defense. Salem struck first with only six minutes gone on an 18-yard TD pitch from Billy Connors to Jerry Townsend. Tom Cuppett scored on the first of his two perfect place- ments. Early in the third quarter the green andwhite drove 86 yards to their final score which came on a one- yard dive over center by Ron Gaudi. Cuppett's kick made the score 14-O. Fairmont finally scored with only two minutes left on a six-yard Acord-to- Quattro pass. Salem used up the re- mainder of the time. Salem - 25 Pot. State - 0 Journeying to Keyser, the Tigers made the most of a sunny Friday afternoon by pil- ing up a tremendous 565 yards total offense in scoring an easy win over the young Catamounts. The Tiger p a s s i n g attack, which was red hot Q18-23 for 360 yardsj, pro- vided the first three TDs. Billy Connors tossed to Dave Wiegand for a 13-yard score, then to Joe Cowley for a 17 yarder and back to Wiegand on a sparkling 91-yard pass and run fthe third longest on national NAIA recordsl. One extra point made the halftime tally read 19-0. In the second half, Ron Gaudi burst over from three yards out to cap all scoring. State was able to threaten only once against SC reserves when they had a first down on the five, but couldn't push over. Salem hada 16-6 bulge in first downs while out-rushing their victims 255 to 10. The Tigers punted only once but were penal- ized 110 yards. 9 F W .. ,, ...Q 5 4 . . we , N ... 2. ,v , , S. Wolfe 6 2 I Salem - 21 West Liberty - 12 This key eastern division victory came at Hite Field overahuge and talented group of Hilltoppers who failed to contain the Tigers early as they marked one touchdown in each of the first two quarters. First to penetrate the visitors' line was Billy Connors who sneaked over from one yard out. Tom Cuppett added the extra point. Second was Don Gilpin with a nine- yard run. The kickwas again good. Salem led the first half activities, 14-0. Coming back strong, WL got back into the game on two short runs by Bob Scheutz to trail only 14-12. At this point Salem drove 77 yards to a score on Dave Wiegand's one-yard buck. Cuppett made it 3 for 3 on the PAT's. 132 Salem - 13 Glenville - 14 Journeying t o th e home of the Pioneers, the Tigers dropped the conference championship in the waning minutes of the game. Salem began as though they meant to insure themselves of the c r own . Glenville fumbled on the first play from scrim- mage, Salem recovered and Billy Connors winged a 14-yard TD pass to Joe Cowley on the next play. Tom Cuppett's kick sent a 7-0 bulge on the board after only one minute of play. In the third quarter Glenville got even on Ollie Pottmeyer's 4-yard dash and Fred Smith's kick. A stalemate resulteduntilthe men of Underwood mounted enough offense to score onSteve Rymasz's 2-yard drive with just three minutes left. This time the extra point kick went wide. The Pioneers, not to be denied, drove unbelievably fast as they tied up the game with 45 seconds left on a 15-yard Pottmeyer-to-Gunnoe pass. Smith's second kick then cost the Tigers conference laurels. Statistically, Salem led in first downs 12-10, connected on 7 of ll passes for 89 yards, and gained 200 total yards. Each team fumbled five times, with Salem losing two and Glenville three, while both squads were penalized 45 yards. 133 Salem College 20 West Virginia Wesleyan 19 Tiger grid fortunes soared from their lowest point to the highest in many a year in just one halfas the 1961 Homecoming became a success because of a second half come- back which set aright a 19-point halftime deficit and defeated the W.V.I.A.C.'s leading team for the only time all season. The game began on a sour note as the Bobcats grabbed the opening kickoff and sustained a drive which endedwith sixpoints ontheir half of the scoreboard. Things then went from badtoworseas Wesleyan held four downs, took over and proceeded to score again. This sequencewas repeatedathird time before half time, and this time a Bobcat PAT ran the count to 19-0. At this point the Tiger machine began to get in gear as they took their turn at scoring aftera 73-yard drive with the initial kickoff. The score came on a nine-yard pass from Billy Connors to Dave Wiegand. After the defensive unit stymied thevisitors, the offense again mounteda 73-yard march, which ended as Wiegand skirted left end from 18 yards away and then took another toss from Connors for the PAT. With six minutes remaining, Salem ran a punt back to the W.V.W. 37 and stormed over from there on a 13-yard dashby Don Gilpin. Tom Cuppett's extra point kick split the uprights and spelled the difference. 134 Salem - 45 Davis Elkins - 6 In posting the highest score since the 1927 Salem gridders bested West Virginia Tech 71-0, the Tigers blasted what was previously the top defensive outfit in the WVIAC all over the West Union Athletic' Field's turf. Salem drew first blood ona 32-yard drive after recovering a D Sz E fumble, as Ron Gaudi went the final three yards. In the second quarter, a 22-yard Connors - to - Cowley pass and an 88-yard drive capped by Dave Wiegand's two yard scamper raised the count to 18-0. All PATs failed. Inthe second half, Connors heaved a 30-yarder to Dave Wiegand for the fourth score. The same combination then clicked for the PAT. Shortly thereafter, Connors found Roy Phillips on a 23- yard TD toss. Ron Whitt took over as quarter- back and connected with Jim Fittro for an 18- yard score, after which Wiegand converted. The final score came as Steve Rymasz plunged over from five yards away. Jim Scott iced the cake with his extra point kick. West Virginia Bowl Salem - 0 W. Va. Wesleyan - 12 Infinishing their season the Tigers ac- complishedtwofirsts - theybecamethe only team to play in both West Virginia Bowls, and also the only team to lose twobowl games fthe 1961 affair was dropped to Fairmont 13-75. Playing in a drenching downpour and after three days of steady rain, Salem was shut out for thefirst timein 17 games, as their vaunted pass- ing attack, led by quarterback Billy Connors, whose 68.72, completion average led the nation, was literally smothered in the mud. S.C. passes were good on7 of 12 occasions, but only 44 yards were gained. The game, close all the way, was decided after a scoreless first half, on a 70-yard punt returnby Wesleyanin the third quarter. This score set up the second, since, with only three minutes left, Salem was forced to gamble for the first down in its own territory. They failed and the Bobcats managed a second tally with but 12 seconds left in the game. Underwood Armory on November 30, 1961, with an 85-64 win over Shenandoah. It ended in Charleston's Civic Center on February 24, 1962, with an 86-84 conquest of Fairmont State. Sandwiched in between were four- teen morewins and thirteen losses, a 12-11 regular season record good for ninth place in the 19-team WVIAC fthe best finish in seven years for a Salem teaml, a third place honor in the tournament of the year, the 16-team West Virginia conference affair at Charleston's Civic Center, and a Coach of the Year citation for sophomore head coach, Don Christie. This was the story for the 1961-62 cam- paign. Following the Shenandoah triumph, the men of Christie dumped Shepherd College, then ran into some trouble and fell to a 4-4 pre-holiday mark. Coming out strong in January, the Green and White capturedthree straight, then lost three in a row be- fore capturing three of four to pull out over .500 to stay. The overall slate showed 13 wins and 12 losses. Big victories were scored over Beckley, A-B, Wesleyan and Potomac State on the road while major upsets wer e recorded at home ov er contenders Glenville, Fairmont and West Liberty. 40 SUMMARY CONT'D Then came the most important event of the season - the conference tourney. Playing like veterans instead of the youngsters they reallywere, fonly two seniors and two juniors were on the rosterb, Christie's charges again dumped Glenville 96-92 to gain Salem's first tourney win since 1952, then bumped off West Liberty's Hilltoppers 70-59. At this point they fell before eventual champ Morris Harvey 123-96 while providing the stiffest opposition the Golden Eagles saw in the event. Bowing out in style, they then clipped the wings of Fairmont's Falcons for consolation honors. It was largely on the strength of this showing that Coach Christie was polled as Coach of the Year by his fellow mentors. Individually, Cecil Perkins averaged 17.5 points per game with Jtme Smith, Wendall Sinnett and John Gracon also in. double figures. Sinnett grabbed 322 rebounds to head up that departmentwhile Gracon and Smith were also strong on the boards. John Kaminsky, Dwain Blagg and Tom Sherwood were outstanding on defense and in relief roles. The team as a whole scored 2283 total points, an average of 78.1 per game, and gave up 2290. They shot 42.7fZ, from the field and 68.9fZ from the free throw line, hauled down 1360 rebounds C47 per contestj while committing 535 personal fouls in 29 games. With only three cag ers not returning, fKaminsky, Blaggand Jim Rockwell graduatel an outlook for the third straight year of im- provement in the Salem College basketball fortunes seems in the offering. COACH CHRISTIE Completing only his second year of college coaching, Don Christie led his team to the first winning season in several years, and saw them cop third place in the conference tournament. As a result Coach of the Year honors were bestowed on the youthful mentor by his fellow coaches. He was chosen over all other WVIAC coaches as the honor covered every major sport. Mr. Christie was a stellar guard for Salem College and a 1952 graduate. From there he entered the United States Air Force and coach- edboth squadron andbase teams to champion- ships at New Castle, Delaware AFB. He then became head coach of all sports at Salem High School for four years before he came to direct the cage fortunes of the green and white. As Coach of the Year after just two seasons, Mr. Christie has made an auspicious debut in what we hope will be a long and successful tour of duty at Salem College. 5 ae .af Q11 B L -1 if lr il un. -Q5 RL v N 'CALL TOURNAMENT l42 rf BASEBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPS District 28 Representatives Hicks scores . . . and . . . scores Bowen starts for home. The diamond forces won games from West Virginia State at Institute and twin wins from Alderson-Broaddus and G1 e nv i l l e . Single victories were posted over Davis- Elkins, West Liberty and Wesleyan to bump the latter from the league leadership. A lone loss, 4-3, came from Fairmont in a game played at Fairmont. Baseball saw many of the same names and faces sharing the headlines. Connors, Wi egand and Perkins were outstanding and received good assistance from Mik e Hicks, Richard Stauffer and Gary Kepple.
