It was a year filled with moments of friendship, excitement, laughter, and study. Although many of these moments may seem insignificant, these are the things that have made the year memorable. W h e t h e r cheering the Purples or Golds to victory, cramming for the quiz to- morrow, or having the time of your life on Junior-Senior Weekend, you will come to A treasure these mo- ments, for they made up the year. What better way is there to pre- serve these memories than in a scrapbook, so that you will never forget 1964. Though busy with a family and an active church and com- munity life, she still makes time to coach us in vocabulary and grammar. Treating us with extraordinary patience, she renders her subject vivid by employing such ingenious means as props and pictures. Her class is history, geography, and language roll- ed into one! In years to come, We may forget the principle city of L'Alsace or how to conjugate Maller or envoyer , but We shall always remember, 'Termez vos livres et prenez du papier, s'il vous plait. With much love, respect, and gratitude, We dedicate our 1964 Quill Pen scrapbook to Mrs. Margery Mize. 6 mas. yjzcaryezy me ff! kg! Though chapel talks were replaced by assembly talks, and ring seals were turned to be worn in a different direction, tradition still directed most of the senior class activi- ties. Beginning with the Birthday Banquet in September, the senior class got into the fast- paced swing of Academy life. Cctober ushered in the season of Assembly Talks, and after the first six Weeks study period, the seniors received their long-awaited class rings. Cash slips and charge accounts were a sign that Christmas and the Senior Bazaar were near. Also the trimming of Moravian candles was a major preparation for the Senior Vespers. With the second semester came many other events-the Junior-Senior dance, the tapping of the Commencement Marshals, the slave auction, and the Senior-Faculty Breakfast. Finally came Class Day and the culminating event-graduation exercises. Class of 1964-gone, but not forgotten. Suzanne Britt s? Only through the cooperation, hard work, and enthusiasm of each member did the annual meet its Feb- ruary deadline. A vital part of the staff was the sponsor, Mrs. Goode, whose help was invaluable. Her encour- agement when things went wrong and her dedication to the project Will never be forgotten by anyone who worked with her. Many new things were added to the Quill Pen this year by the staff besides changes within the pages of the annual. For the first time the Quill Pen be- came a member of National Scholastic Press Association. One of the highlights of the year was moving the headquar- ters from among the cultures and ham- sters of the science lab to what was formerly the Duck Inn. The staff hopes that the 1964 Quill Pen has captured the phases of Salem life that will make the year memorable. Under the management of Peggy Ward, the ad staff is responsible for obtaining advertisements from local merchants, as well as from parents and out-of-town advertisers. The publica- tion of the Quill Pen is entirely depend- ent on this committee, and this year's annual could not have been possible without the co-operation and helpful- ness of the staff members. The Scribbler's Club, in addition to the art- icles of poetry and prose submitted by the regular members, also accepts the literary works of all members of the student body. Miss Nowack, the faculty sponsor, has a deep interest in the Academe which is pub- lished twice in each school year with a sup- plement appearing in the summer. The students enjoy reading the works of their friends and-who can tell-maybe some of those literary masterpieces may be yours. SCRIBBLER'S CLUB 4'-4-Cb' Iii! The Dramatics Club at Salem is another facet which provides a girl with the oppor- tunity to express herself Any girl who wishes to can be in the plays and may be- come a member of the club. Membership in the organization is obtained by acquiring a certain number of points which a girl earns by stage participation or working behind the scenes. Guided by the expert direction of Mrs. Bur- roughs, each girl has the opportunity to improve the quality of her singing and to broaden her knowledge of music. The concert season begins with the Father-Daughter Banquet in Nov- ember. This year we delighted our fathers with a unique and light-hearted performance of the broadway show Oliver. The Christmas season is a busy one for the Glee Club with two annual concerts on the calendar - one at Adelaide's church and the other for the Academy on the eve of Christmas vacation. To add to our busy schedule we were honored this year to perform for Salem College. With the beginning of second semester the girls worked hard to pro- duce an entertaining concert for the Mother-Daughter Tea in the spring. The highlight of the season, which is always awaited with much en- thusiasm, was the joint concert with Asheville School for Boys in April. Finally the Glee Club culminated its year of successful and enjoyable work with its performance at Commencement Vespers. are yir T 6 if il '51 3' 45 C .ag 5 Mal QQ. , is ef, ,T 'za 6 5 L X 'i 1 it A ' 55 SPIRITUAL LIFE COUNCIL Under the leadership of the president and the advisor, Miss Wright, the cabinet mem- bers and one representative from each hall work to provide spiritual stimulation for each Salemite. For the Athletic Council and for Salem, this has been a memorable year. The athletic en- thusiam throughout the year has soared to untold heights in Salem's history. Perhaps the advent of the Class Cup has proven most exciting. The primary purpose of athletics at Salem is to instill into each student a sense of spirit and sportsmanship, both on and off the playing fields. There is competition be- tween the two school teams-the GOLDS and PURPLES and between classes. It is composed of the Heads of the Gold and Purple teams, serving as president and secretary, and the heads of the various intramural sports offered at Salem through the intramural program. The girls are elected in the spring and serve for the coming year. The Council serves as hostess at a picnic in the fall, at two banquets in January and May. Recognition Day is the top moment, climax- ing the year by presenting awards to the girls for their outstanding athletic achieve- ments. The awards for the year are given by the Heads of Purples and Golds. At the close of the program the coveted cup, Salem's sym- bol of skill and sportsmanship, is awarded to the team which has won the most points during the year. The duties of the marshal include helping her senior dress for Class-Day, presenting the senior with her bouquet during the Class-Day ceremonies, and helping her in the practice for the J unior-Senior leadout. Though her official duties are few, the marshal is important, for she. links the seniors with the underclassmen. 1 ANNE ADAMS SUZANNE BRITT 76 Ingelside Dr., Concord, N.
