Q SALEM -W-NNW. f 4 f 4 ,- FOREWORD The annual statt of l962 presents sil- houettes ot Salem in the hope that we may capture that elusive quality that is the Salem way of lite. Note a few characteristics ot a silhouette that make it applicable to the Salem spirit. A silhouette represents not one girl, but ev- ery girl, revealing, thus, the importance of each individual in the school community. ln that we are unable to discern petty tlaws within it, a silhouette represents Perfection. A silhouette is our ideal, the goal for which we strive. ln academics, in athletics, in every area, let each representative silhouette stand as an example tor us, that we may become ideal Salem Girls. Others will remember math class and Miss Nunn's rules such as Dear Aunt Sally, guaranteed to make any math problem easier. Still others will recall the long hours she spent atter school help- ing girls understand the mysteries ot math. Finally, she will be remembered for her sense ot humor that was manifested in even the most trying situation. All ot these recollections are characteristic ot Miss Nunn, who is an ardent Academy tan, advisor and teacher, and a will- ing participator in every school activity. SENICR CLASS FRANCES MASLAND President f The Ring Banquet given by the Freshmen to the Senior Class of l962 was the first real mile- stone of the opening year. Following this event the traditional senior projects began: selling blazers, the Senior Bazaar, and the slave auc- tion. Other events long to be remembered by the Seniors were Senior Vespers, Junior-Senior, Class Day, and finally, the culminating event- graduation exercises, From the first day of the school year until graduation, each Senior conscientiously strove to give the best of herself in both academic and dormitory life. Through Senior-Seminar, religion classes, participation in school events, and ev- ery-day living, each girl became keenly aware of her responsibility as a citizen of the school and the community. lt is hoped that the silhouettes of the class of l962 will forever be present in the spirit of Salem Academy. JLI IDR CLASS The Junior Class started the year off with a bang-of the auctioneer's gavel, and one of the most successful Bake Sales ever. From that moment on everyone's extra time and effort was devoted to preparing for the long- awaited Junior-Senior. Busy Juniors rushed here and there selling Christmas cards, tip-ons, address books, Sunday morning doughnuts, note cards, and tickets for Slouch Day, The result? a wonderful dance and a memorable Junior year. By the time the end of the year approached, the girls realized that the responsibility of being upperclassmen, which officially began when they received their blazers in the fall, was soon to be fulfilled, for their Senior year was not far off. SGPHOMQRE CLASS Come on y'aIl, buy some . . . and BPFSC posters everywhere re- minded us that the Sophomores were on their way to a successful year. Class spirit, such as this year's Sophomores have shown, is most important for a good year, as all Salemites know. Class spirit was shown in their promptness in taking assignments to the infirmary, rain, or shine. From the beginning of the year, they saved and saved until time for their annual Open House, presented to the Senior Class the afternoon of Junior-Senior. After this they began the regular hoarding of money for the long antici- pated Junior-Senior of their Junior year. ln the spring, they presented to the school a most original skit, demonstrating the talent of the class. Everyone agrees that this year's Sophomores were a very enthusiastic and original group. Lucille Bair 2211 Buena Vista Road Winston-Salem, N. C. As members of the Service Committee the Freshmen cheered many in the intirmary by bringing their mail. Again this year the class made a big success ot the ring banquet in the tall, decorating the walls with huge gold Senior rings made of con- struction paper and hula hoops. Few will target the excitement of that night. The Freshman Carnival, an event eagerly an- ticipated each year by all Salemites, was held on January 27. The crowd gathered in the social room really enjoyed the carnival, particularly its main attraction, the beatnik house. 12? Ugr- Margaret Bell Route l Box l48 High Point, N. Though intan- gible its presence is made real through the efforts of the Honor Council which is com- posed of the Honor Council president, the Student Council president, and representa- tives from each class and each clay student group. The Council's function is to help each student understand and fulfill the require- ments set forth in our honor code, especially in regard to academic work. The Council, in strengthening the integrity of each girl, personally, builds the integrity of the entire school. POLLY TARWATER President l in l Qu QLIILL PE To provide each student with a lasting and permanent momento of her year at Salem was the purpose of the i962 Quill Pen staff. Through hard work, cooperation, and the en- thusiastic help of Mrs. Hensel, the staff's sponsor, this purpose has been recognized. From these combined efforts has come a yearbook capturing the most meaningful phases of Salem life, mak- ing it a tangible container of the in- tangible spirit of Salem. With an eager new sponsor, Mrs. Wheeler, and an energetic new staff, the Scribbler's Club decided that it was time some changes were made. New girls were asked to write an article or draw a picture for application for membership. The Club revised its constitution, then began to raise the standards of the magazine. Some ofthe basic changes were: having Salem College print the issues, changing the name Spilled Ink to The Academe, and charging a small fee of tive cents for each issue. Members met weekly to discuss the art of good writing, to listen to advice from veteran authors such as Russell Brantley, to read and analyze submitted material, and to assemble the magazine. The goal of The Academe is to truly reflect Salem's lite and ideals. This was accomplished only through the wholehearted interest and sup- port of the entire student body. A roar of applause is heard from the audi- ence, lights are turned on, and all rush up to congratulate the actresses on their perform- ances. This is a typical end to an evening spon- sored by the Dramatics Club. At Salem the Dramatics Club is another facet which provides a girl with the opportunity to express herself. The parts in the plays are not exclusive to Dramatics Club members. Any girl who wishes to become a member may do so by acquiring an allotted number ot points which she earns by stage participation or behind the scenes. A ' ' I I I f w I Y y Do you like to sing? lf so, you are among the many who join the Salem Academy Glee Club under the direction of Mrs. Burroughs. The Glee Club meets for forty-five minutes on Wednesday and for ninety minutes on Friday. During these meetings each girl learns to make the best use of her voice through extensive drill and practice. Often the girls are divided into three groups according to the parts they sing, in order to become pro- ficient in the songs they are to perform. Under Mrs. Burroughs' expert supervision each girl gains knowledge of the world of music. The first occasion for excitement for the Glee Club members was the Father-Daughter banquet, held the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, during which the girls sang to a most appreciative audience. Their hard work and concentration brought forth two Christmas programs, one for Ade- laide's church to thank her for her faithful service and one for parents and faculty which really put everyone in a Chrstmas spirit. Hard work still continued after Christmas for a program for the Mother-Daughter Tea held in the spring. Excitement rose to its highest point as the girls prepared for a joint concert with Asheville School. The Glee Club's final performance was held at Commencement Vespers, which crowned an eventful and successful year. :-SLU l I F f'x Q 0 Y , ,ke WZ?
