Likewise, as each girl realized that she would soon be leaving the Academy, she con- tributed her best toward making this year most rewarding for Salem and for herself. Through informal discussions in Senior Seminar, new em- phasis Was placed on the true meaning of ideas and principles such as truth and religion. Miss Lit, serving as their instructor, helped each girl to formulate new opinions on each subject and to understand its meaning more clearly. Each senior returned to Salem last fall with a strong determination and sense of duty to her class and her school. This determination to give of herself was obvious throughout the year, but especially at such times as Senior Day. Though at times the way seemed difficult, the seniors have felt their years at Salem Academy have been most profitable. As they leave, they carry with them many cherished memories of their years at Salem. The auction, their first project, was a great success. The juniors continued to increase their funds by selling Christmas cards, stationery, tip-ons, hose, socks, and, on Sunday mornings, coffee and doughnuts. The class combined their hard-earned money and their orig- inality to make this year's Junior- Senior the best ever. The dance, with its Mardi Gras theme, was held in February and will be long remem- bered by the graduating class. Due to the seniors' promptness. the class received their much-antici- pated Salem blazers early in Novem- ber. At last they were able to flaunt their upper class status. In the late spring when the student body offi- cers for the 1961-'62 were elected, the juniors realized that their senior year, with all its added responsibil- ities, was only a few months away. Among other duties the freshmen raised the flag daily in front of the school and, as members of the Service Committee, cheered many in the infirmary by de- livering their mail. This year the Ring banquet given by the freshmen added a new feature to Senior Day. This banquet held in Octo- ber was enjoyed by all, especially the members of the graduating class. The annual Freshman Carnival, held in January, had as its theme T.V. Land. The original decorations and attractive booths added to the evening of fun. The council is composed of the Student Body pres- ident, the Honor Council president and rep- resentatives from both day student groups and each hallg it meets every week to dis- cuss problems of dormitory life, to make new rules, and to discard outdated ones. Among other activities the council spon- sors the traditional Birthday banquet in September, the Christmas banquet and party for the help, and the inspiring Spirit Fire Ceremony. SXYLVK .XC Mil, NW EMESE SOOS President HONOR COUNCIL The Honor Council tries to instill per- sonal integrity in every girl at Salem. Yes, every Salemite has heard these very Words many, many times during her life at the Academy. It is on this principle that our honor system is based. The council, composed of the Student Body president, the Honor Council presi- dent, and representatives from the day stu- dent group and each class, meets every Week to discuss and to suggest improve- ments in matters relating to academic hon- esty. Thus by strengthening the character and integrity of each student, the council builds the character and integrity of the school. ELIZABETH TERRY, Editor, MERRILY AUSTIN, Assist- ant Editor. s., x r ll QUILL To leave with each student a book recapturing the highlights of a year at Salem Academy Was the purpose of the 1960-'61 Quill Pen staff. A yearbook is one of the few material mementos that a student may cher- ish and enjoy for many years. The staff has endeavored to fulfill its purpose through vital co-operation and by enthusiasm. Mrs. Nancy Maurice, the staff's sponsor, with her interest and help- ful advice, assisted the staff in pre- senting each Salemite with a book which will keep Salem in her heart when Salem is no longer her home. Left to Right: Rena Penn, Melinda Blanton, Taffey Elizabeth Terry, Parks Freeze, Jo Northup, Brownie Shockey, Paula Henry, Sancie Masland, Dottie Rogers. Davis, Merrily Austin, Peggy Reynolds, Sue Justice, i , .V fi ini-1onun. 40 N With efficiency and co-operation the Ad Staff has shared in making the 1961 Quill Pen a successful year- book. Before the yearbook could be published, it was necessary to col- lect advertisements from merchants in Winston-Salem and other cities. With promptness and determination the staff did their job to the best of their ability, thus contributing greatly toward the publication of this yearbook. The Scribbler's Club of Salem is composed of girls who are interested in the fields of creative writing or illustrating, either as a hobby or as a possible future career. The mem- bers must meet the standards in their respective fields and be interested in publishing the school magazine, Spilled Ink. The Scribbler's Club is also responsible for a summer edi- tion of the magazine, Pencil Shav- ings. Miss Nowack is the club's sponsor. The club's goal is to acquaint its members with Writing, proof-reading, assembling a paper, and all other work necessary for publication with the exception of mimeographing, which is done by Miss Hanson. Although most of the material in the Spilled Ink is contributed by members of the Scribbler's Club, the entire student body is encouraged to submit articles. For the entertainment of its audiences, this organization presents a series of one-act plays in the fall and a three-act play in the spring. Since these activities are not con- fined strictly to club members, any girl can accumulate the ten points needed for membership in the Dra- matics Club by taking part in the plays or serving backstage. Mem- bers are also required to earn six points each year to retain their mem- bership. Much of the success of the club is due to the interest and helpful ad- vice of its director, Mr. James Bray. Although the club includes no pro- fessional actresses, the members have great fun as amateurs. All girls are eligible for this organization. Under the ex- pert direction of Mrs. Burroughs, the ninety-minute period every Friday afternoon is a worthwhile experience. The Christmas program, which the Glee Club gives every year at Ade- laide's church, was rehearsed for sev- eral weeks and was given the Sunday before the Christmas holidays. This is the girls' way of showing their gratitude to Adelaide for her faith- ful devotion all these years. The concert was repeated later for pa- rents who live near and for faculty. This year a joint concert in April with the boys from Asheville School was a huge success, both in antici- pation and in performance. It is hoped it will become an annual event. RED CROSS COUNCIL in if 'X Left to Right: Jennie McGuire, Rena Penn, Bebe Weber, Paula McClister, Judy Walston, Betty Holliday, Susan Southgate. Every student at Salem has an opportunity to join the Red Cross by pledging her time, serv- ice, and money. During the year the members participate. in such worthwhile activities as pack- ing a gift box for disaster areas and giving the County Home a party. It is the function of the Red Cross Council, under the able supervision of Mrs. Britt, to plan and direct a philanthropic program for the year at Salem. When the members have been chosen, the traditional tug-of-war between the Purples and the Golds takes place. Legend holds that the team winning this contest will also win the silver cup at the end of the year, but even legend is sometimes just legend, Both the Purples and the Golds strive throughout the year to earn the most points. DEDICATION When We, the class of '61, recall our first visit to Salem Aca- demy as timid applicants, We remember Miss Wheeler as the one Who met us at the door and made us feel at home. In the follow- ing years when each of us returned to Salem We again found Miss Wheeler Willing to advise and help us as We tried to be-- come good Salem citizens. Although We leave Salem this year, We do not feel that We Will lose contact with the Academy, for Miss Wheeler as Alumnae secretary will keep us well informed. Thus, at Salem Miss Wheeler is the tie that binds the traditional and the new. It is she Who has helped to preserve much of the valuable heritage of Salem Academy and she Who has continu- ously Worked to build ,upon this heritage a better Salem. In acknowledgement of her many contributions to Salem and to us, We dedicate the 1961 Quill Pen to Miss Wheeler, our friend and advisor. if 4? 66 MISS HAZEL D.
