You have worked-and not made work your masterg You have thought-and not made thoughts your aim You have met with Triumph and Disaster And treated those two imposters just the same. You have heard the truths you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, And watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stooped and built them up with worn-out tools. You have forced your heart and nerve and sinew To serve a turn long after the required was done And so pushed 011 when there was nothing in you Except the Will which said to you: Push on! You have captured hearts by your grace and virtue And served as both student-faculty erutehg Neither foe nor loving friend Could hurt you For all counted with you but none too much. You have filled our hours and days at Salem Witli loving care and devotion, Certainly trueg For these and other innumerable contributions, MISS WEAVER, we dedicate our Quill Pen to you 4 ' aw, f f2'4fH.,sQ5-12152 X1 ' A vfY,M,,r,,jr4,k , vm R.pg.i1,,- ,Ag 'l,m.,L, QV , A Q,-5 v E.. Each Wediiesday afternoon, Salem girls become aware that Student Council is once agai11 meeting. Many important problems pertaining to dorm- itory life are discussed and solved. The Student Council, which consists of various representatives, began the year by welcoming the new students. Then there was a gala banquet at which the forth-coming debs performed their first senior duty, cutting the birthday cake. At Christmas the Council gave a party for the help. The Council's year was drawn to a close by the traditional and inspiring Spirit Fire ceremony. Each girl at Salem is a member of student govermnent and has a share in maintaining our high standards. 1 36 K HONCDR CGUNCIL 1 ,Si l I Q From left lo right: Betty Boss, Carol Culledge., Gray Preston, Cason Lineherger, Aileen Samford, Lee Slawter, Carolyn Meares, Barbara Blaekwelder. , We, at Salem, have often heard that any organization is only as strong as its Weakest link. The Honor Council is our judicial and exemplary group that works with kind patience and untiring skill to strengthen our 'cweak links and to instill in each of us the true meaning of honor in every phase of life. The Council consists of two Seniors, two Juniors, one Sophomore, one Freshman, and the President of the Student Body. 37 SPIRITUAL STEERING WHEEL From left to right: Sarah Pickens, Anne Murdis, Dol Laird, Lucie Niceley, Page Bradham, Julie Arnold, Cail IVl4'IVli1'llael, Lake Illlllklll, Sarah Atkins, Ginger Bell, Mary Martin, President, Betty Burton. The Spiritual Steering Wlieel, one of the most important school organi- zations, carefully guides each Salem girl to he a more spiritually well- halaneecl person. Each hall is represented throughout the year hy various girls. These representatives, as well as the main Council memhers have nightly hall devotions and arrange religious services, thereby shaping the spiritual growth of all. Every Salemite feels the Imeneht of the S. S. Among our groups of organizations at Salem are six important commit- tees: The Good Will Committee, the Standards Committee, the Community and World Service Committee, the Social Committee, the Program Com- mittee, and the Service Committee. It is the duty of each committee chairman to lead her group in the right direction and to plan, organize, and carry out each activity to the best of her ability. Under the leadership of Mrs. Kap- pes the Junior Red Cross began its year of service with a membership drive. Every Salemite has an oppor- tunity to become a member by pledg- ing her service, time, or money. The Red Cross Council is chosen by popular vote at the beginning of the school year. Throughout the year the girls participate in various worthwhile activities from which they gain per- sonal enjoyment in a sense of service for others. .IUNICDR RED CROSS 39 From left to right: Branchie Watsoll, committee headg Tillie Anne Kiddg Sally Bet Lindsayg Scott Rodwollg Hannah Gil- liamg Julie Arnoldg Lynn Sharpeg Nancy Hall, Lucie Niceley. DANCE COMMITTEE Blue lights and appropriate music gave an enchanting atmosphere to Hlaittle Star, theme of Salenfs Hrst dance in the 1958-59 season. ln February the committee presented a Valentine's Dance which was one of the highlights of the year. The dance committeels efforts led to fond memories for each debutante's scrapbook. 40 GLEE CLUB Every young dehutante-to-he must learn the social graces and artsg and the glee cluh, under the ahle direction of Miss Sampson, affords her an excellent opportunity to learn or at least attempt the art of singing. For those who are especially good singers, there is the ensemble which adds a great deal to all of our Clee Club productions. The program given for the Patron's Tea, the traditional Christmas Pag- eant, and the favorite trip to Adelaide's church at Christmas started off the Clee Clulfs husy year. All these projects lead up to the spring operetta which highlights and completes the Clee Clulfs activities of the year.
