Where ln the year of 1945 a small night school was begun. It was from this humble origin that our school de- veloped. Rev. john Ediger was the Principal ol an enrollment ol 100 students and 8 in the College. Down through the years the school has always opened its doors to the worshipping ol Cod. under the fine leadership of its various Presidents and Principals. Leslie F, Smith, Principal 1946-47. was instrumental in changing the name to Salem College and Acade- my. There were 117 students with 10 in the College that year. ln the fall ol 1948, Dr. Robert Hovland came to the Academy from lVlinneapolis. Minnesota. The Prin- cipal was Mr. Charlton Smitherman. Dr. Hovland and Mr. Smitherman guided the school until the lall of 1950. Rev. Henry Turnidge took over the joh with Rev. A. A. l.ot-wen as the Principal. The enroll- ment lor this year was 175. 38 fl .iv itll: 41:24. Z - gi the Bible is the Textbook By 1953 the student body had grown to 211 students. Mrs. 1,uci'11e Humphreys took ovcr as the first woman Principal. With Mr. Turnidge still leading the school, 1954 proved to be a very prosperous year. Mr. Schroeder became the Principal and the school had 15 faculty members. This year, 1955, was a star year indeed. A new shop was added to the building and the inside of the gymnasium was Hnished. The mortgage was paid off and the school received its accreditation. Rev. Turn- idge is the President and 1V1r. Schroeder our Principal. The school has grown spiritually as well as educa- tionally through their leadership. The present enrollment is 220. May the school progress as much in the future as it has in the past. 39 x x X ,QL , mi ffl. in W nfl- . -- , ,i '1-Ya.- Y-. - - - 1- - '1 z ' - . 2 ' .- 'Y'-'-Pwvwqlluuguvvwh,-.,,,..,,.,,,,,., ..,f ,VH nf. ,A If ,. A SALEM ACADEMY BAND The Music Department of Salem Academy, under the direction of Professor Eby, has achieved some outstanding things this year. The band has grown from a small group of seventeen players last year to a very creditable group of Fifty-four. Through the efforts of the Music Promoters' Club, a good sum of money has been raised looking to- ward the purchase of uniforms for the band. Ad- ditions to improve the instrumentation have been planned. The band played at several of the home football games, and a pep band played at a num- ber of the home basketball games. The entire band appeared in two public concerts, one spon- sored by the Music Promoters' Club and another by the Parent Teachers' Fellowship, in which the Varsity Choir also appeared. One highlight of the year for the Band and Choir was the trip to Spokane to participate in the Music Festival of the Northwest Fellowship of Christian Schools. The choir and small ensembles proved themselves very useful to the school by their numerous appearances in the churches, and by their singing for banquets and clubs throughout the valley. The choir also sang at the Holy Week noon hour services spon- sored jointly by the Salem Ministerial Association and the Y. M. C. A. They made a week end trip to Redmond and Bend and fumished the special music for the Union Easter Sunrise services held at McCullough Stadium. 5,77 ,fs fe! 58 f as QA 55 , Q my Q ,Mn-.. ,Ink 'T ,. .Q , Q gk QQ. , L x .N ., ' 5 QW . -, f an xx' ff X m 5fJff1'sYL:Q. ,2Q?.f 4 r. . gk. 3.,kg,'mf T55 ' M vw 3-gfilmk A J M' --,Al 1 val pf in , . 1 I-fi 'Q va: ' w ,, 1 n 4 5 sw . ., W X A mf, sr Q sk 49 is 33 an ,iw -if - I ll 'F Ka . -X Q6 ,s mx ,X N pw X, WM. ,W ,W S -.xam 1. 137' Jigifi, 5-'A-gif. Ummm APRIL ml 8th 1955 Junior Class of Salem Academ PRESENTED ' r Sandra Iohnson, Editor Marilyn Hamilton, Assistant Editor 'lun-rv-gl' fy CRUSADER As the Editor of the 1955 annual, l would like to say a warm Thank You to every mem- ber of the staff for their outstanding coopera- tion during the year. The joh could never have heen done without them. The following de- serve a special recognition for their part in put- ting this book together. N Marilyn Hamilton performed her task of as- sistant editor exceedingly well. She never shirked her part of the job. To Vazel Shroll I would like to express my gratitude, both as editor and friend. Although she had no special office to fulfill on the staff, she helped in everything that needed to be done, doing it well. The photographer. Drex- el Stitt, uncomplainingly took pictures of the school activities in spite of the student hody's jestings. Lois Iuedes, who is especially skilled in the talent of typing, did an excellent joh. Bob Imel, Business Manager. and DeI.oss Friesen, Advertising Manager, never failed to complete their assignments no matter how tir- ing they seemed to be. And to Mr. Eby, for his wise answers to our seemingly unanswerable problems. Last hut not least, the whole staff is to he commended for a job well done. 64 B 5. 54 1. 3 a Y' -0 ix 'I' K vf JNL X - x J -A If 1 ff Wil! 13 W vu. 4 ' Bruu D illxn ldztm lN '1I'1lVI1 ll xmilrmi fls.s1'xtr1rzt lidimr Smnding: Marilyn Hamilton Pa!
