SHIP'S LOG The crew of '50 has been afloat for three years, roughing the waters in the good ship Warren High School. In a colorful ceremony, we hoisted the senior banner as we set sail on our final voyage. Soon after the ship was under way, we entertained the passengers and petty officers with three one-act plays. When one of our sails was ripped, we were forced to stop at Tam's Island where we had a gala feast. At Port Eleven, we received our first cargo of wrappings, greeting cards, and story books. On the last half of our voyage, we signed peace treaties with friendly nations for pictures, name cards and invitations. To quell the mutineers who were trying to gain pos- session of the ship, we staged our final peace offering, a class play. The apprentice seamen and the press gang ordered our decks scrubbed so they would gleam at the docks of graduation, where we received our honorable discharge. We leave the ship in the able hands of the class of '5l, and im- mediately start our next voyage bound for the ports of New York and Canada, then home again, each of us will drift away into separate uncharted seas. 10 1 C W , vs ' V? , 4, 'e P Y' ,721 ' ' ,-we . j 21 fi A , . fr MARY ELTZROTH Carnival Queen-l 946 REBECCA BREEDLOVE Riley Queen-1949 .Jw f 1 NORMA BOXELL Senior Class Play Queen-I949 8 r lg f I . l --, EQ. In August we returned to the ship and found the class of '50 as our superior officers. We continued selling, but when the sea became rough, we took leave so we could increase our funds by picking up corn. One calm day we rowed ashore and entertained ourselves with a skating party. Following the drift set by the head shipmen, we gave a dramatic play, Smilin' Through. We will work hard so that next year we may take our po- sition as officers of the W.H.S. ship. As the ship crossed the equator, we celebrated the capture of the deck scrub- bers by initiating them and afterwards giving them a party. Our petty of- ficer, E. V. Williams, announced a magazine campaign and gave us shore leave to sell. We were such good salesmen our sales exceeded those of any previous gang. To add to our treasury, we sold plastic bags and iron. Next year we hope to be apprentice seamen. ' Www . V j 'fax ., Robert Stueky W 1. V ,A ,Q Q, ll . ' V. President 'N' l al' 1 'li A 4 55 . We soon learned that our chief duty was to scrub the decks. Since all crews have to be duly initiated, we had to dress and act like Indians for a day. Our chief project for the year was holding coats. We made our biggest haul at the Kiwanis fish fry, We have had some fun too, and were given leave to have two parties. Next year we are looking forward to being the press gang. David Ruble President Ellen Marie Gebhart Secretary 8. LAYMON'S PEP POEM P stands for push, or pull, or piddleg Which it will be is often a riddle. E stands for effort, or effect, or easy, It often leaves our coach quite queasy P also stands for pride, or power, or pleasure, A fighting team we all will treasure. T represents our team, Rooters for which should have lots of steam. A let us say, shall stand for able, Makes us strong like the Atlantic Cable. L is for Louis, our coach so fair, Never afraid to take a dare. K can be used to stand for keep, Keep our team at the top of the heap! And now that each letter in my speech Has properly received attention, There's been a request that I teach a yell Which students Often mention. Speaking of voyages, I am reminded of the crew that left this ship in 1950. Twenty-five years have passed and now each member of that crew has become rich and famous. There was the Admiral, Bob Evans, who is a famous chemist for Eli Lily in Indianapolis and who has discovered an atomic cure for colds. Miss Nancy Gebhart, who has been starring in opera at the Metropolitan for the last ten years, was amember of that class. There was another accomplished singer in that crew. too. Etta Jane Schemerhorn has gained fame and at present is head of the department of vocal music at the Cincinnati Conservatory. Also there were twins in that class. Although their class mates and teachers had trouble distinguishing them, their students have no trouble in telling them apart, because Mary Eltzroth is principal of the Salamonie Township School and Marie is her private secretary. Among those seamen were those interested in providing and caring for the needy. Esther Clark is now on the government staff of social workers. She was always trying to help people in school, but who ever dreamed she would make it her career? Kenna Lou Heinbaugh has been nursing in various hospitals when she has time. It seems the male patients always like Kenna Lou. and she just can't resist their charm. I'm sure you have all heard of the fabulously rich Bob Craft. Who would have thought you could make a fortune from a chain of recreation centers? All people who read the paper last week know that Bob Searles was the first man to reach Mars. He was a member of that class. and I hear he has plans to take a trip to the moon next month. Gene Williams and Kenneth Cloud joined in a partnership about 1960. and the boys are really doing a stupendous business at their Cadillac garage. Thev are so interested in each other that Gene lives with Kenny and his family. They are such good salesmen that everyone in Warren now drives one of their Cadillacs. Francis Smith, more commonly known to his friends as Sam. manages the international Harvester. We knew Sarn's big dreams and sales talk would get him somewhere, but we always wondered where. Ramona Cook, another member of that class. fooled everyone. We were sure Ramona would get married immediately. She does have a different name. but you see it is only a pseudonym, for Priscilla Pinkelwites is the author of some of our most popular books. Thirty-four students assembled in the first grade room with their teacher, Miss McCord. They were as follows: Don Turpin. Noel Gaiser, Bob Searles, Dorland Wyatt, Hiram Adsit, Jerry Shultz, Gene Williams, Bob Doversberger, Jack Cady, Bob Brubaker, Kenneth Hunnicut, Patty Myers, Marie Eltzroth, Bette Hardin, Etta Jane Schemerhorn, Juanita McDonald, Mildred Border, Norma Boxell, Evelyn Bardsley, Nancy Dixon, Barbara Tam, Ramona Cook, Barbara Sloan, Joan Hardin, Phyllis Nafe, Esther Clark, Rebecca Breedlove, Nancy Gebhfart, and Jack Schmidt. September, 1939-This year we were very eager to begin our second year of school under the command of Miss Wait. Counting the seven' gained and five lost, thirty-four finished the second grade. ' September, 1940-Thirty-one noisy third graders trouped to school early every morning to work under Miss Click. September, 1941-Mr. Wright greeted us as our commanding officer during the fourth grade. This year we had twenty-seven. September, 1942-being still twenty-seven in number and more anxious to become matured, we were quite mischievous. I. J. Hall was very skilled in the way he controlled us. September, 1943-Thirty-three of us were excitingly awaiting the end of our sixth year, so that we could enter Jr. High. During this episode of our life. Mrs. King kept us in complete aggressiveness. August, 1944-ln the beginning of this month, twenty-eight seventh graders em- barked for a six-year voyage on the good ship Education . We found that we had to assume some of the responsibilities of this trip. so we elected tne following officers to take care of these dunes: Admiral. Bob Doversbergerg Petty Officer, Mary Eltzrothg Log-keeper and Treasurer, Etta Jane Schemer- horn. We also found out that our commanding officer was to be Miss Strait. We gained some new helpers and lost someg and at the end of the year we were 34 in number. August, 1945-After spending a few months in port, 30 of us continued our voyage. For this year's cruise we elected new officers for our shi.p: Admiral, Barbara Tamg Petty Officer, Nancy Gebhartg Log-keeper and Treasurer, Jerry Shultz. Again this year we had two class parties. We picked up four new passengers and also lost two. This year we missed nothing that happened in school, good or bad. During the last semester especially we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. August, 1946-We, as freshment, 29 in number, set sail from the port of Jr. High School. Our faithful commanding officer, Miss Strait, was with us again and we elected Jerry Shultz as Admiral, Etta Jane Schernerhorn as Petty Officer, Robert Evans as Log-keeper and Barbara Tam as ship's Treasurer. The seas were pretty rough for a month or tivo, especially during our initiation, but it was smooth sailing when the crew won top honors by elect- ing Mary Eltzroth as Carnival Queen for the year. This was only the beginn- ing of the glory that was to be gained for our proud vessel. We sponsored a movie for our foremost money-:raking g:ro'ect of tie year. We also used the captains quarters for a cneci-troom, and the ships funds grew rapidly during this time. ,........,--41'-v-'-4--......-....-...,....w.s--.,--, --e ---- -- -- rt ,- S e . -- . I. new K .. Senior Class Will of 1950 We, the graduating class of 1950, in the course of our high school days, have accum- ulated various and valuable possessions. Our years have been very fruitful. We have acquired a vast store of knowledge, great prowess in athletics, and unusual ability in leadership. Also here and there we have acquired trivial goods as a class and as individ- uals. As we are burdened with these possessions, we think it fitting to dispose of them. Too, we realize the School would be at a great disadvantage if we took all our worldly goods as well as ourselves. Therefore, we, the class of 1950. being of s ound mind and body, after considerable con- sultation and discussion, do make and publish this last will and testament to dispose of our possessions in the way that we deem bestg and we make fitting bequests to those whom we think worthy and needy. To the Junior Class we leave our dignity. good sense, and best of all, our ability to play hookey. To the Sophomores we leave our utmost sympathy which we know they will need while living under the overpowering Seniors of 1951. To this school, our 'beloved Alma Mater, in order to show our appreciation of all that it has done for us, we do, in this last will and testament, hereby bequeath the amount of ten thousand memories as a lasting memorial of the class of 1950. We appoint Miss Strait, our sponsor, sole executor of this, our last will and testa- ment with the understanding that this will is to stand against all attacks of time or change. In witness whereof we, the class of 1950, have set our hand and seal on this 21st day of April in the year 1950. CLASS OF 1950 - ' -'797l'f7'W9'lZ 1TKT?4J 7 L , fy' K Ci Q xv? W-v , , ,.,. sense...-,,,-..,,.-. ....., .., August, 1947--At the port, we. as sophomores, met our shipmates and proceeded on the voyage to the eleventh grade, a harbor which we, 30 in number. were Very anxious to reach. We elected a new Admiral. Bob Evans, a new Ship's Treasurer, Bob Craft, a new Petty Officer, Jerry Shultz, a new Log-keeper, Jack Myers. In addition to the regular duties on board ship, we had three members who acted as yell leaders: Rebecca Breedlove, Mary and Marie Eltzroth. We gained some new deck hands and lost some. Starting the voyage with a new ship, we had a sale of magazines, and were so successful that we topped the sales of the former crew. This was quite a feat. We also held the only all school party for initiation of freshmen, ending the day's festivities with the initiation around a huge bonfire, with games, and a Weiner roast. August, 1948-One more port closer to graduation found twenty-six of us not loaf- ing on the job. Quite the contrary, because in the summer we stopped at different ports to sell concessions. This made our treasury grow rapidly. Dur- ing the winter we were settled at one port because of weather. We con- tinued selling concessions and also published a newspaper bravely titled the Junior Journal . Miss Strait and Miss Blair offered their competent super- vision which we deeply appreciated. Again this year we elected the Carnival Queen, Ramona Cook, and the Riley Queen, Rebecca Breedlove. During a lax period of our activities, we sponsored two motion pictures at our local theater. Then came our first dramatic attempt: The Junior Class proudly pre- sented Little Women , and considering the stage fright. we did very well on play number one. We made our deck work into play and accomplished much. August, 1949-In a colorful ceremony we hoisted the senior banner as we set sail on our final voyage, and advanced the Junior officers to serve as Senior off- icers. Soon after the ship was underway. we entertained the passengers and petty officers with three one-act plays in which all the crew acted or directed. Many seamen were leaders in other activities: Bob Craft acted as yell-leader, Marie Eltzroth presided as president and Nancy Gebhart as treasurer of Sunshine Society, Nancy Gebhart was president of the first Booster Club to be established in our high school, Etta Jane Schemerhorn. Nancy Gebhart, and Kenneth Cloud won honors in music: Mildred Border won honors in artg and Norma Boxell was elected Class P'av Queen of 19503 Cloud, Doversberger. and Searles were on the county championship baseball team, Evans. Harris, Cloud, and Doversberger played baskeiballg Doversberffer won the foul pitching trophy for the second consecutive year: Adsit assisted as student manager for the teams, Marilyn McKinley sold 371.75 worth of Christmas cards, Bar- bara Tam was leading salesman for both class plays, Bonnie Boulware fin- ished her work at Burris and is now enrolled in Ball State, Barbara Tam was editor of the Thunderbolt , When one of our sails was ripped we were forced to stop at Tam's Island where 'we had a gala feast. At port Eleven, we received our first cargo of wrappings. greeting cards and story books. On the last half of our voyage, we signed peace treaties with friendly nations for pictures, namecards. and invitations. To quell the mutineers who were trying to gain possession of the shin. we staged our final peace offering, a class play, We shook the Family Tree . The apprentice seamen and the press gang ordered our decks scrubbed so thev would gleam at the docks of graduation. where we will receive our honorable discharge. We leave the shin in able hands of the Class Of '51 and immediately start our next voyage bound for the ports of New York and Canaflag then home again. where each of us will drift away into separate unchartered seas. -.-,,T-,vqv --,V ..,Y, ,i.,.,,,., . ...,..... ..,.,.,. ,.- i i ir- . , as -' ' g ' Barbara Tam is still an old maid, but you should recognize the name as the first woman president of the United States. It seems one girl in that class didn't care for Indiana's climate and incidentally the males, so Becky Breedlove moved to Arizona where the hunting was better. The last time Beck visited the ship she was still looking for a rich husband. Bonnie Banter Boulware and Doris Eltzroth Clampitt had their future chartered before the 1950 cruise was finished. They both have large families and are happier than they ever were. Hiram Adsit manages the Zollner Pistons. and the star of our high school team, Bob Doversberger, plays for Hatch. They both have other interests too. Bob referees high school basketball in his spare time. Hatch has a chain of 5c and 100 stores that he manages just for entertainment. Mildred Border is the head designer at Ayres and Company in Indianapolis. You would never believe it, but Mildred's so happy that she actually tips the scales at two hundred. Norma Boxell decided the women in these United States could stand some new hair styles, so she created her own styles and is now consulted as an authority for hair-styling in the United States. Norma had a friend in high school named Evelyn Bardsley. Her name is changed now for she has been married twenty years and she has three childreng however, Evelyn works for Norma a few hours each week, and they have just as much fun now as they did in high school. Doris Wilcoxson started housekeeping for her husband as soon as she was dis- charged from the ship of '50 and in 1974 was elected the best housekeeper of the year. Marilyn McKinley. the girl who enjoyed life so much, decided to help others en- joy it through music and is the happiest music teacher in the state. Carl Harris took South Bend by surprise by buying all the Bendix plants. Harris, along with the others in that class had an eye for big business. Don Turpin became head salesman of the John Deere Corporationg for selling farm equipment they never could have found a better man. A Every class has at least one member who jets rich quick and roams the rest of his life. The class of '50 was no exception. Jerry Shultz has seen every country in this hemisphere and I heard he's planning on going to Mars with Bob Searles his next trip. May you who will soon become apprentice seamen in Salamonie Township High School prepare for a most interesting and useful career. Remember that though the seas may be rough at times, determination to reach your goal will bring you safely to the port of graduation. f.Wmfwvq--- ,-. - - - ,'.:-y'.:V-V V: : Q,- l -i'.:VVf 'Eff' 5'rp 435,11-, 3- - ,JM , - ' :tai-'--VV ' 1- V' 'v V V '::.5,f:.5.','.
