As our parents you were always ready and willing to guide us when we were in need of your help. You journeyed with us and offered assistance whenever it was needed. Soon, our journey will come to a close and we will turn to others, but we will always remember and be thankful for your companionship. It may have seemed to you, at times, that we were taking a wrong turn or losing ground - but soon we learned to work together and to understand each other. We, now, would like to acknowledge your love and understanding by dedicating our four years at the Salamanca High School to you. Yes, our tasks for one journey are near completion-but our labors, our accomplishments and our failures, too, will never be forgotten and your faithfulness throughout will always be treasured. 4 - 1 1 -, .- 1 .. -. .-. APPRECIATION MR. GILCHRIST As we seniors glance over our journey there are certain persons and events that we especially re- member. Silence was not uncommon in your classes Mr. O'Neil and Mr. Gilchrist, but now we would like to speak, to thank you for your patience, your under- standing, and most of all your interest in us. It is not easy to express in words our gratitude, but we feel it in our heans, Mr. O'Neil, you taught us how to tackle our problems, block adversity and pass the test. just as the boys who learned lessons of sportsmanship and fair play while on your team so we Learned how to be better players in the game of life. Scholastically we will never forget your tutor- .. t, MR. O'NEIL ing classes and how much they really helped us. You, Mr. Gilchrist, gave English a new place in our lives with your likely and interesting classes. The fresh air walks when we seemed bored, the echo of nevah, nevah, nevah when we came up with the wrong answer, the fatal day when Project was due, these are but a few of the memories you left us. We feel privileged to have had you as our teach- ers. Our experiences in your classes will never be forgotten and neither will you. We hope you will re- member us as we remember you, our friends. To both of you we send a heartfelt Thanks He tezzcbef who give! and be learns who receive! -Emerson I 1 0 0 o Y Q I ADMINISTRATION ' ' MR. DONALD H. WING Superintendent I MR. WILLIAM o. VALENT MR. Rogers, R. Zurat, B. Smith, G. Sage, L. Fenton, T. McKenna. We Juniors are fast approaching the summitg two years ago becoming juniors was only a dream, but now it is reality and part of our past. Our activities have been varied and our ambitions great, for soon we will be Seniors and our duties will increase. At first, in September 1956, we found it hard el- bowing our way around the halls of the old school, but we soon learned. And in the fall, we freshmen held The Harvest Hop , which proved to be a great success with Glenn Boutelle and Karen DeBoy reigning as king and queen. The following spring, the annual freshman assem- bly was held under the capable leadership of our advisor, Marian Carter. Soon enough, we found ourselves Sophomores and again, lost in the shuffle of getting used to a new school. Our Sadie Hawkins Dance was not held because of the limited number of dances allowed in the new gym. But as spring drew near we planned and staged a very successful assembly. In order to increase our treasury, we T. Lockwood, Trearurerf G. J. Frank, Preridenlg Mrs. Wllipjulc, flrlz'i.mr,' M. Vesneski, Secrelarju' S. Smith, Vice- Preridem. held a bake sale, and sure enough, added to our funds. All of these activities were under the direction of Mrs. Stewart, our sophomore advisor. Now, here we are, juniors, and upperclassmen at last - and what a year it has been! Under the advice of Mrs. Whipple we have planned and carried out numer- ous successful events. We, also, formed a board of direc- tors of juniors so our plans could be made and met with greater swiftness. Our money-making projects will never be forgotten - from our bake sale - to our paper drive, and our Wobble Gobble dance in November to the junior-Senior Prom. Of course, we will hold the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and honor the Class of 1959. But when our class rings arrive - we will realize we are al- most there-our journey is near completion. Our senior year has not yet begun -- but we know when it does, we soon will be thinking of other journeys and other good times just as our friends in the Class of '59 are doing now. P. This is a nationwide organization consisting of students who have maintained an average of 8596 and three honor points during their first three years in high school. The four qualifications necessary are: scholarship, leadership, character and service. The deserving members are tapped at the end of their CHARACTER SCHOLARSHIP 7.121 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ' junior year and are inducted early in their senior year. The members of this organization perform ser- vices whenever they are called upon to do so, and they present an award at graduation to the senior who has shown the greatest advances in art. It is indeed a great honor to become a member of this society, for its ideals help one as the journey toward a rewarding life becomes more complex. LEADERSHIP SERVICE FUTURE NURSES ........ The Floy Hotchkiss Club, or more commonly known to the student body body as the F. T. A., is composed of junior and Senior girls and boys. Our aim is ro create a feeling of interest in the career of teaching and acquaint the members with the ideals of the teaching vocation. The officers for this year are: President, Pat Smithg Vice-President, Johanna Tertinekg Secretary, Barbara Ambuskeg and Treasurer, Nick Veterise. This year the members of the F. T. A. went to the jefferson Street Grade School where each one monitored a different classroom and assisted the regular teachers. This experience helped us a great deal to recognize the responsibilities and achieve- ments of a teaching career. It is a profession that requires an unlimited amount of patience and study. TRACK AND FIELD The 1958 Track squad has gone down in history as the best track team ever to r epresent Salamanca High School. The Foymen rang up eight straight victories in their dual and triangular season defeating a dozen different schools in Western New York State. In addition, they won the first South- western Conference Championship in the school's history after nine years of trying for the crown. A week later they copped the first Cattaraugus County Track Championship for the school after a 21 year lapse. The only blemish on an otherwise perfect season was the Section VI, Class A meet at Buffalo on june 6 when Alden Central High came from behind in the final event to beat out the Warriors for the Sectional Championship by a 30 to 26 score. Qi 'T' if,1.,5-sf w .. 3 f .. .N . .Q-. Five records at SHS were broken by this championship team. Jack Quinn set a new high jump record, Syd Smith set a new hurdles record, Tom McKenna set a new record in the 22O'yard dash and the relay team of Clair Kyler, Doug Wood- worth, Mickey Nugent, and Tom McKenna set a new 880 yard relay record. The fifth record to be broken was Tom Printup's sensational run in the mile that erased the 22 year old record formerly held by John Bartoszek. Q What was now hut a path haf hecome zz high road Martial SENIOR CLASS We have finally made it, our journey is almost com- plete, and yet, as we reach the summit we cannot help but glance back over the years and renew all of the won- derful memories we have had. We know there will never be another experience to compare with the ones we have had as students in the Salamanca High School, but in order to enjoy it through the years - we wish to leave some recollections. As Freshmen in the old school, we had our prob- lems, our adventures and our misadventures. Getting lost was not unusual in those first days at S. H. S., and yet soon we were making new friends and leaving our mark on high school life. Who will ever forget the Jet Age jump when as freshmen we were up-in-the-air enjoying our first class dance? By the time our assembly rolled around, we were pros at the game . . . or so we thought. Sophomores- geometry, biology, world history, who will ever forget that year? It seem as if this was our hardest year, but we did have some fun. Our assembly was a rare review of talent. Our dance Soph. Summer Breeze in the spring was an event that will live forever in our memories, and yet, there everyone was . . . signing yearbooks. Half of Route 59 was now behind us as we were . . . Upperclassmen at last! Here we are, Juniors, and just as dazed as the Freshmen. Yes, in September, 1957, in moved into our new home - and what a home it was. It seemed as if we would need roller skates to make it from one wing to another. However, we were soon too busy enjoying our beautiful pool, gym, and auditorium to worry about distance. Ashes Annie made a big hit with the audience as our junior assembly took place. Yes, this real hep Cinderella was surely a star. We held another Spring dance and close on its heels came the big events. The junior-Senior Banquet when we were hosts to our friends, the Class of '58, was the last time we were together as a body, singing, laughing, and joking. Mov- ing-Up Day, when the Seniors departed, was our big day as we received our class rings and most important . . . We were SENIORS. Our last year in our fairly new home was completely different from the other three. It was, perhaps, an alarming thought to know we were the oldest! But, we became accustomed to the fact and got the year off in tune with our Back-to-school Sock Hop. Always on the go, we Seniors had so many pro- jects on the move that between the yearbooks, the Senior trip, the Senior play, and the Stardust Ball, we found little time for anything else. We had fun even with all the work . . . who will ever forget the job of decorating the gym for the ball or those rehearsals for The Little Dog I.aughed ? Yes, we are almost at the summit and our trip will soon end with graduation. We realize there are other routes we will travel, but the one that will always linger in our hearts will be this one . . . Our journey on Route 59. CLASS OFFICERS Preridem ............. DAVID HUNTTING Vice-Prerident .... ...... S ANDRA KYLER Secretary ..... ..... M ARION HEIDRICK Treasurer -- .......
