In Memoriam Q 5 if IN MEMORIAM Mrs. Charles White devoted many years of her life to the music department of Salamanca High School. Every year, her labors were rewarded with the successful Christmas programs and the Spring Festival. She worked individually with those students especially inter- ested in music and expended much time on the ensemble, the mixed chorus, and girls' chorus. We seniors think it fitting at this time to recognize the endeavor that Mrs. White made so willingly in our behalf during her years of service in Salamanca Central High School. 4 DCd1C3f1OH, Mr. Maroney, we know and admire you as the man with the broad grin and the large heart. People say that we are impressionable, and quite possibly we are. But that's how we judge people, through impres- sions. Each incorrect note that you've detected - and put right - has given us an impression. Each time that our band has given a success- ful performance, we formed another impression. In fact, our impres- sions of you have been so favorable that we'd like you to know and remember our feelings. So, Mr. Maroney, we dedicate this yearbook to you, our bandleader, our music director, our friend. R ' H P 1 J AWVX 1 f 1 ' 1 . I I . 1 C , . 1 I , , 1 Lf I Lf , j , l f , Lf A f J . V1 FROM xliesident: Chris Tern Smith, Seniors -- it hardly seems possible Remember when we . were bewildered freshmen, trying to orient ourselves to the new atmosphere of high school? That seems like a very short time ago, but then, even this year has flown. Throughout the fa ristmas and All-occasion cards. In fact, anyone who would like a box of cards at a discount, see Mr. Gilchrist. Carrying on the standard of being first, we had the first dance ofthe school-year. The Darn Sock Hop saw ' everyone put his best foot forward in gaily colored and patterned socks. ll we trudged from door to door with our Ch ' The gym was amazingly transformed the night of the Blue A 1 B nge all. A giant Christmas tree stood majestically in the center of the floor while our blue ange1s guarded heavenly ground. The crowning of the queen, Patricia Birmingham, and the King, Mark Bloom, added further magic to the night. We hope succeeding classes will follow us in this first. The seniors really burned the midnight oil to get the yearbook out. We went flying down the hall in pursuit of write-ups and flying up the hall in pursuit of ad to accomplish, that for a whi whether this book would appear. s. There was so much work le we doubted Mr. Senior fficers Nervous! that is the only word to describe us before the senior play. Excitedly, the cast at all those people out there. whispered Look But with Mr. Gilchrist as helmsman, we steered a straight course and the play was a triumph. Well, the ship has weathered every storm- Y the prize we sought is won. From now on we will each follow individualcareers. But no matter how far from home we may go, the Class of '58 will always remember the joys and sorrows of Salamanca High School. 7' . 3- llchrllyt A 03,119 XX X l .1 , Q ' I E L ,1 - z X ' SANDRA AMES I K l Pony ran kid. rd be a good driver if I could see over the steering wheel. We were upperclassmen but you'd never know it with all the confusion the first day of school. However, it didn't take us long to get busy and have a whirlwind candy sale that netted us a tidy stun. This was done with the guidance of Mrs. Elsen, our advisor and under the direction of our newly-elected officers: Kar en Groat, President, Cas Myers, Vice-Presidentg Rosalyn Reed, Tr- easurerg Marian Heidrick Secre tary, with Pat Smith and Paul Hep finger representing us in Student Council. Our assembly was presented last fall with our own Juniors writ- ing the scripts, Our famous ASHES ANNIE captured Rockin' Romeo's heart after a hectic hop. E It isn't all play and no work for the junior class tho. Mr. Hammond's lab sessions resulted in singed hair, fire, and foul odors but we learned our chemistry. .T ulius Caesar and the Civil War exhausted both sides, those who studied and those who didn't. Students are in contention for the talker of the year award given by Mr. Gilchrist. T'he .Tunior -Senior Banquet, Moving Up Day, and Graduation Night will see the junior class bidding the seniors farewell as we look forward with apprehension and hope to our own Senior Year. We sophomores are proud to be the first original sophomores to participate in all the activities this school has presented to us. It was hectic that first month figuring out which route to take to get to the gym. But when everyone was settled 5 back into the old school spirit again, we had our first sophomore meeting. Here we elected the most capable leaders we knew who could carry on the work of responsible officers: Tom McKenna, President, Dawn Lankow, Vice-President, Gretchen + or Stewart, Advis T. McKenna, P Frank, Secretaryg Bill Bzkak, Treasurer. Although Sophomores are the lowest class in our wing, we'll be Seniors soon. We carried on the old tradition ofa successful class assembly. We had a great deal of trouble making money because there were no class dances this year. We owe our gratitude to our advisor, Mrs. Vivian Stewart, for all the counsel and guidance that made our sophomore year, our first one in this building, an enjoyable one. With the advantages and the disadvantages of a new school, we are all looking forward to a more profitable year next year when we'll be old hands at the way the school is supervised, but we'll never forget the year we spent adjusting to our new sur- roundings' soPHoMoRE oFF1cERs James Stevens, Treasurer, Dawn Lankow, Vice-President, Gretchen F rank, Secretary resident YXIIWW wel use f M ,df gm Q4 w ,,,- , Q N - 25- Mi 14 .L 5 Q Q0 , All In wb 5 '11 'Q M X, CTR s ?x wr- wx Q SRX ge 5 2 s .www 4 t 1 g K. Smith BASKETBALL The 1957-58 varsity basketball season was rather discouraging. However, the team came back to defeat Cattaraugus twice and gain an upset vic- tory over Randolph. Ray Smith, our six foot center, is the only squad member who will graduate. So next season, the young Warriors will be experienced veterans and will probably have an outstanding year. r This was the last team that Mr. Clair Weseott will coach as he has been appointed head of the Guidance Department. Sinc e 1950, when Mr. Wescott became coach, the Warriors have estab- l lished a record of '74 wins and 70 defeats. M, Ward P. Hepfinger J. Owens D. Yehl 76 Basketball 'Z T, Spry C. The 1957 Red and Gray Trackmen completed their finest season in the last ten years, compiling a 6 won and 1 lost record in dual meets. In addition, the Warriors captured second place in the annual Cattaraugus County Meet and copped fourth place finishes in the Southwestern Conference Meet and Section VI, Class A Meet. Highlights of the 1957 season for the thinclads was the breaking of two school records. The 880 Relay Team raced to a new record in the dual meet with Falconer speeding the distance in 1:39.6. Captain Wayne Abrams smashed the school's thirty two year old half mile record in the County Meet. Abrams touring the 880 yards in 2:05.2 erased the mark of 2:07.8 set way back in 1932 by .Tohn Hoyt. Many fine players will not return next season because they have graduated. These seniors who finished school were Gordon Priritup, Wayne Abrams, Mike Oyer, Richard l-leidrick, Ron Yehl, and George Kilburn.
