1980 ECHOES SAKS HIGH SCHOOL VOL. 27 ANNISTON, ALABAMA Remember When .. . Pam Clark-Editor ludy Ogle—Co-Editor Joe Wooten—Senior Film Shirley Pody-Sponsor lamey Boliek-Senior Film Ass't. Greg Govatos-Sports Kim King—Sports Jeff Lambert—Photographer Tami Nix-People Philip Pieper—Organizations Diane Watson-People Toby Ziglar—Photographer Remember when ... We acted out each day Like characters in a play: We were villains, heroes, clowns, According to our ups and downs. Tragedy, comedy, mime; We played each in our Time. Each line came straight from each heart, As each actor impromptu played his part. Timing proved both fast and slow. As Youth and Freedom produced this Show. Remember when. 2 Remember when each day was a picnic ... We scampered down the halls— Playing games, chasing each other. Trying to keep pace with our own joy. At break we spread our feast— Sharing bag to bag. Savoring the taste of delicious friendships. Each happy face beamed sunshiny smiles; Our contentment was as soft as the summer sky- Each one had found his four-leaf clover. Remember when each day was a picnic. 4 5 SPORTS The Main Event was a knockout this year. We scored high with spirit and enthusiasm. The parade of floats from each class before a rip-roaring pep rally, the best win of the sea- son over B.B. Comer, and the dance after- ward; all helped to make this one of the best homecomings ever. 0 M Homecoming Court: I to R. Rachel Yarbrough-9th grade rep.. Comer 6 Glencoe Alexandria Managers: Philip Thacker, Tim Diggs. Spencer Houston THE 79 FOOTBALL SEASON High expectations preceded the 79 football campaign. After a disappointing 78 season, the Widlcats had many returning lettermen who had valuable game-time experience. An exciting win over Wellborn in the annual spring jamboree game the Wildcats a needed boost before tough summer practice began. All of these expectations were met when the young Saks squad marched into Wildcats Stadium and promptly defeated the 4A Oxford Yellow jackets 21-13 in the inaugural game of the year. Suddenly the Wildcats hit a streak of bad luck. Four tough losses followed as the Wildcats kept us with our fingers crossed until the final buzzer. After an open week, a big win over favored Wellborn surged the Wildcats onward and they traveled to Heflin. The Tigers dominated the game sending the team home with aspirations toward Homecoming against B.B. Comer. After a fun filled and exciting week, the Wildcats got down to the real business on Friday night. B.B. Comer was no match for the inspired Wildcats and many players experienced their first Homecoming win. A tough loss to state palyoff-bound Glencoe sent the Wildcats to their final game of the year. On a cold night at Saks Stadium, the fired-up Wildcats beat Alexandria in overtime to crush the Valley Cubs playoff hopes. Even though the record was a disappointing 4-6 the Wildcats gave us many exciting moments and a bright outlook for next season. Taking a breather Discussing strategy. Ty goes through with a fake. JR. The first round was against Al- exandria and was won 5-3. In the semifinals )acksonville won 5-1. Our girls made very few errors but just couldn't hit the ball. Words are not enough to describe the three game that we played in the county tourna- ment. We began with Donoho. It was very tough game with both teams playing excellant ball. The score was one to one at the bottom of the 7th and Samantha Evans hit a homerun to break the tie, and win the game. Then we played jacksonville. The game turned into a marathon lasting 11 in- nings. We won 10 to 9. Pitching was a big factor in the game. We just kept coming back inning after inning. The last game was also with jacksonville and lasted 9 innings. We took the lead early and they came back hitting. Coach Wilson said We may have the second place trophy, but we were the real winners playing 27 innings of ball. They are definitely the best team I have ever coached! They are the true winners. 43 Photo by Stephen Gross 1st Row: S. Davis, T. Smallwood, M. Murray, S. Clark, S. Spellman, 2nd Row: C. Collins, C. Misko, D. McDowell, C. Love, J. Mason. M. Cram, O. The picture scene was a beautiful ocean side sunset, with palm trees and grass. It was done in pastels by Tracy Owens, Jeff Graham, Phyllis Meads, and Greg McNeal. Inside was a bridge which everyone walked over to enter. There was a sparkling fountain and pool highlighted by col- orful lights and flowers. The walls were decorated with bamboo paper and murals that gave an illusion of a real fantasy island. The refreshment tables were decorated with fresh fruit, flowers and colorful candles. To set off the scene the over looking of the sunset made Fantasy Island much more realistic. It was a great turnout and everyone obviously had a fan- tastic time. 52 Setting on the dock of the bay. 53 What are you going to wear?' FANTASY ISLAND Lead out dance. An emphasis is placed on athletics, in that the club provides spirit and oneness in all activities. This year's club has been active through participation in ballgames, pep ral- lies, making signs, a card section for football, receptions for each varsity sport, and selling of pom-poms. 97 President-J. Cotton During the 1979-80 school year, the Student Council sponsored several dances for the enjoyment of the stu- dents. These included the Back to School Dance, Home- coming Dance and Sweetheart Dance. During the Homecoming season this year, the SCA also sponsored the homecoming parade around the football field. The SCA entered a float in the Anniston Christmas Parade for the first time. The float was based on the theme of Santa's Workshop. The floats were judged and the Saks Student Council was awarded the $300 cash first place prize for their efforts in the Amateur competition. The Saks Student Council was represented at several of the workshops this past year. These included the Univer- sity of Montevallo, Fort Payne High School, Auburn High School and the state convention, the United Student Councils of Alabama in Mobile. 98 Sabrina heads up the SCA store. 1st Row: B. It gives you a feeling of responsibility to know you are getting train- ing in your chosen field. It also prepares you to be- come a responsible human being through school-sup- ported educational programs. Forty percent of high school gradutes between 1%8 and 1978 did not possess the training for the job mar- ket. Employers look to shop today to supply skilled workers. This program gives students training plus an education. You only have to be in the tenth grade to qualify. Shop seems to be one of the best bargains in education. lames Bearden works on a machine. 106 Daryl and Bob fix Ihe frame. Taking a break. Jeff Roberts oils a machine. T 41« 185 Now that we have come to the end of another year, we can pause and reflect on the many good times we have had. We will all go our separate ways, college, and others to work. As we begin another phase in our life may we always cherish the memories of good ole Saks High School. May we hold the red and white close to our hearts and become living examples of the high moral ideas instilled in us by teachers, preachers, and loved ones. As we continue on remember to shine forth with the warm smiles, happy faces, and the unity that makes us one. Remember to keep Christ first, work hard and apply success to the great challenges that lie ahead. Editor, 190 03
