r . -5 T 4 ECHOES 1969 SAKS HIGH SCHOOL To meet - to know - to love - and then to part - Is the sad tale of many a human heart. Foreword The faces of Saks High School are many and varied, but they reflect you, the student body. Yesterday a happy face, today saddened, tomor- row a tearful but eager face meets the world with meek anticipations. This yearbook has attempted to portray in pictures and words your lives as you have lived them during this school year. If a student, perusing his yearbook, can place himself in a scene or can enjoy an accomplish- ment, the yearbook has succeeded. Also, if the actions in the school by students, teachers, and administrators are correctly pictured, then the year- book has succeeded. We hope you feel the 1969 Echoes has succeeded at least as well as the volumes that have gone before. He took over this role at our school after serving as assist- ant principal for two years. Mr. Connell holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master ' s degree from Jack- sonville State University. Principal ' s Message I would like to express to you, students and teachers, my deepest appreciation for your fine efforts and spirit of cooperation during this school year. Students, you are to be congratulated for the dedicated manner in which you have sought an education and in so doing, you have raised the character of Saks High School to its greatest heights. TEACHING POINTQ THAT COUNT A Cheerleader ' s yell, the hard contact of football players, the final buzzer of a basketball game, the umpire ' s call of . . . STRIKK, all combine with the other sounds of Che high school ' s sports world to make up the athletic program of Saks High. As Saks ' spectators and players go from g to game and community to community they not only take the name of Saks to many parts of Che state, but they constantly display the great spirit and sense of fair play for which the Wildcats a known. Though the game may not always be won, self discipline, sportsmanship and courage, points which we value in the game of life, have been gained through participation in Che Ini scholastic sports program. But who created that excitement and enthusiasm which seemed not quite as prevalent in the other sports contests? The cheerleaders created it! Diane Lee, Jackie Third, Pat Lee, Ann Butterworth, Betty Orr, and Annette Martin took over the varsity cheerleader spots, while Patsy Henderson was elected Mascot. The girls took real pride in their jobs and did their very best to stimulate the fans into cheer- ing for the home team. The cheerleaders meant more to SHS than just tra- dition; they were the sparks that ignited the school ' s fiery spirit. 164 JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS PAM OWENS - Head DONNA BROWN MARILYN MATHIS RITA WYCOFF TERESA HENDERSON MARSHA TAYLOR SENIOR HIGH PAT LEE - HEAP ANN BUTTERWORTH JACKIE THIRD 166 CHEERLEADERS Milt ANNETTE MARTIN BETTY ORR PIANE LEE 167 BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS SPONSOR MRS. I wondered why It left familiar things behind. A hand caught mine ... I paid no mind. The stranger never once did say Just what had brought him on my way. On we went, and some afraid I wished I hadn ' t come, but stayed. All the friends that I once knew Took a road named Goodbye too. There were no two roads just the same Though all were called Goodbye by name. The road went on; we went on too, And I was sad, for then I knew That never could I be the same Having walked down Goodbye Lane. And though I couldn ' t understand We walked together hand in hand. We said no words, but just walked on, I thought of things now past and gone. I thought of games I ' d lost and won, I though t of all the things I ' d done, I thought of those I loved and cared, Of times we ' d had, of things we ' d shared. I thought of those I ' d come to know. Just knowing them—they ' d helped me so. I thought of things, of tears I ' d shed . . . Those same things now brought smiles instead. The tasks I ' d done, those left to do, I wondered how I ' d make it through When something inside seems to say, The best you can from day to day. The way was rough; I knew the score, It never ends . . . there ' s always more. But now I know that all in all Each thing in its own place will fall. I thought of all the happy days, The sad ones now just seemed a haze. And in a flash I came to see How much the past had meant to me. We walked along- -I wondered where The future led and what was there. The past still echoed from behind I was its, and it was mine. But in my heart was still a fear, And in my eye a shining tear; Yet on my face there was a smile, And we walked forward all the while. I walked along the road Goodbye. I looked back once ... I heaved a sigh. Then I remembered at my side— My silent, but my constant guide. The stranger ' s hand I felt in mine. I looked into his face this time. I asked his name—he turned just so, He smiled and said, I ' m called Hello.
