¥ i mi i ■ mm - ift ECHOES 1968 SAKS HIGH SCHOOL We, the annual staff, dedicate this edition of the Saks Echoes to the memory of Randy Snider, who would have graduated with the Senior class of ' 68. Let us never forget Randy and what he has meant to us. FOREWORD With the fading of summer into fall we witness the abandoning of summer activities to once again enter the challenging doors of learning. The bewildered and somewhat frightened freshmen, the eager sophomores, the confident juniors, and the proud but somewhat sad faces of the seniors, flood the mighty halls to uphold and respect the loyalty of our alma mater, SAKS HIGH SCHOOL. The faces of SAKS are many and varied, but they reflect us, the student body. Yes- terday a happy face, today saddened, tomorrow a tearful but eager face meets the world with meek anticipations. It has been said that one opens a good book with anticipation and closes it with profit. The basic idea in planning the 68 ECHOES has been the creation of a book that will meet these requirements. Joyful times, thoughtful moments have been selected as subjects for the picture story of the year. The staff hopes you will begin reading the history of this year with a great deal of anticipation. When you close the book, it is hoped that you will have reaped a profit of renewed memories. CONTENTS Administration Faculty ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL Mr. Love attained his B.S. and M.S. Degrees from Jacksonville State College. He also has an AA Certifi- cate from the State Department of Education in recognition of 45 hours of work at Auburn University beyond the master ' s degree. I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to each student for helping to make Saks High School the fine institution that it is today. Congratulations are also in order for this year ' s graduating seniors. Being able to see boys and girls make this step in life is one of the many rewards of my profession. Your success in life is likely to be patterned after your success in school. Learning to face problems forthrightiy and with determination will carry you far on the road of life. Learn to live and live to learn. Set your goals high and work continually toward them. Take pride in seeing things done well. Have faith in God, follow the Golden Rule, andhelp make this world a better place in which to live. Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL W. E. Connelljr. Our hopes and anticipations are about to bloom into reality. Though eager to begin a new kind of life with a new environment and new challenges, we will al- ways long to bring back the golden moments of time past. It will be our one aspiration to again walk the paths of achievement, fun, and friendships of high school years. How mar- velous is that characteristic of life, memory. For through this tunnel of the mind can we find the lost experiences of yesterday. We are a part of all that we have met and undertaken. We take pride in saying that be- cause Saks High School knew our senior class, it is also a part of us. The hallowed halls of Saks will always echo our achievements and strides in bringing tradition to Saks High School. In the same manner, let us never forget the harvest of learning and experience we have reaped, and may we always uphold and respect the loyalty of our dear Alma Mater, Saks High School. The Wildcats looked like a title contender as a balanced passing and running attack proved too much for a stubborn West End team. The Wildcat defense was magnificent in the first half as it did not allow the Pat- riots a single first down. This type of play marked a victory for the Wildcats and led them on the way to a winning season. WILDCATS FALL TO STRONGER VALLEY TEAM The Alexandria Valley Cubs, using pinpoint passing, stunned the Wildcats in a hard fought contest on the ' Cats home field, by a 27-7 margin. The Cubs struck early and mustered a considerable lead which the battling Saks team could not overcome. In the fourth period, a jarring defense broke loose the ball and the Wildcats carried in the pigskin for their on- ly score two plays later. JACKSONVILLE UPSETS SAKS IN HARD-FOUGHT CONTEST The mighty Wildcats displayed an amazing first half quickness and played rugged football, to knot the score at 0-0 going into the third quarter. Yet mistakes proved the difference in the last two stanzas as the Eagle offense penetrated the Saks defense for a field goal and two touchdowns to emerge the victors of a 17- decision. WILDCATS WIN MORAL VICTORY AGAINST 3-A POWERHOUSE Jack Stewart ' s mighty Wildcats put a scare on top-ranked Valley High of Fairfax, before succumbing to a 41-14 Ram victory. Though the scoreboard read in favor of the Valley Rams, the Wildcats won a moral victory, having led the Valley in first downs and total offense. The strong Wildcat team is to be commended as they continued to move the ball as the potent Valley offense was shown up by the Saks desire and dedication. PANTHERS STOP DESPERATE SAKS TEAM BY SLIM 7-0 MARGIN The Panthers of Walter Wellborn had to battle with all the talent and ability they had to emerge victors of their homecoming tilt. The ' Cat team hit the field to play, and that they did. The outstanding school spirit inspired the Saks elev- en to play to a scoreless deadlock at half-time. Strong determination and pure guts marked the play of the Saks gang, as they led the Panthers in first downs. It truly was a moral victory. SAKS BOMBS HOKES BLUFF ELEVEN This game marked the end of the Wildcat defeats for the season, as the determination and enthusiasm dis- played earlier payed off, with a 37-7 victory. The ' Cats came from behind after an early Hokes Bluff aerial was good for a score. After the team gained spirit and momentum, there was no stopping them. The Wildcat defensive unit held the Eagles to only two first downs the entire four quarters of play while the offense amassed a total of twenty-one. A well bala nced scoring attack showed strength on the ground and in the air. After this outing, Coach Stewart ' s bunch allowed their opponents an average of two points per game while the Wildcats managed an average of twenty-four per game. WILDCATS DUMP PIEDMONT, 16-0 The mighty Wildcat eleven, with spirits high, managed to spoil a Piedmont Bulldog homecoming by rolling over the ' Dogs with a safety, two touchdowns, and two P. A. T. ' s. The fourth quarter was scoreless, a factor which saved the Piedmont team from further embarassment, yet by then the damage had already been done. The Saks squad provided their faithful fans with forty-eight min- utes of action packed football, sporting an unstopable ground attack in claiming their third victory. HOMECOMING VICTORY IS SWEETEST OF ALL On a gloomy, rain-drenched night the Wildcats displayed extreme determination and desire as they fought the hardest game of the year to emerge victors of the Saks -Oxford battle by a 7-6 margin. The rain slowed our offense, yet what the Saks bunch lacked in ability to move the ball, they made up in their tenacious defense as they stopped one of the county ' s most powerful offensive machines. There are many festivities which add to the gala event called homecoming, but the historical victory over the Yellow Jackets was the highlight of the affair. HEFLIN FALLS TO MIGHTY WILDCATS, 48-0 The mighty Wildcats presented Jack Stewart with a lopsided victory over the Heflin Tigers, and in doing so, highlighted a winning season which enabled them to finish in a tie for the third place spot in the county gridiron race. There was little the Wildcats failed to do in this game, as their defense held the Tigers to five first downs, intercepted two passes, and recovered three fumbles. The Saks offense moved the ball all over the field, as they amassed two hundred and seventy-five yards total offense. This was a fitting end to the victorious sea- son of the Saks Wildcats, 1967. ff%. c i TVitecaU i ..« £A W7G. 70 ■ Wt ' 7 3ffip Head Coach of the Saks Junior High Wildcats is Ed Henderson.
