we wowl Thou art all fair O Mary and the ongmal stain IS not in thee Since God desired that the mother of H1s Divine Son be free from all stain of sin He provided from the very 1nstant of her conception that her soul be radiant and pure As far back as the fifth century many people observed the Feast of the Immaculate Conception but it was not officially raised to the dignity of a feast until 1476 In 1846 we the Catholics of the Uruted States adopted her as the patroness of our country under this revered title In 1854 Pope Pius declared December 8 as a holy day of obligation set aside for special honor to the Immaculate Concept1on He likewise proclaimed a an infallible teaching that the Virgin in the first mstant of her conception was by a singular grace and pr1v11ege of Almighty God in view of the Ments of Iesus Chnst the savior of the human race preserved exempt from all sta1n of sm Mary manifested her joy by appeanng to a small child Bernadette Soubirous 1n Lourdes France world was waiting to hear I am the Immaculate Conception In this encyclical F ulgens Corona Glonae Pope Pius XII has bestowed even greater honor upon Mary by proclaiming the year from December 8 1953 until December 8 1954 as a Manan year in order that Catholics throughout the world may give spec1a1 devotion to her Immaculate Heart We the Seniors of the Class of 54 heeding the Holy Fathers Marian Year call to youth to make Mary their model to be hke her beautiful and good and ever firm in the face of evil chose the Blessed Virgin under the title of the Immaculate Conception as our patroness Mary was one of us We are human beings So was Mary Moreover her D1v1ne Son bequeathed her to us as our Mother It IS but natural that she realizes our tnals and needs As the mother of Christ Mary IS able to obtain d1v1ne aid for us at all tunes Daily we pray to Mary asking her to help us live lives worthy of her D'1V1Ile Son We the youth of today look to the future eager willing hesitant but fortified by devotion to Mary and confident in her power Genevieve Naleson 54 2 I n . . . . . . n .
