WENDELIN HIGH SCHCDOL PITTSBURGH PENNSYLVANIA I am the Lord thy God . . . And Him only shall you serve. ILuke 4, 81 PREAMBLE As we near the time when we must take our place in adult society we become ever more cognizant of the prevailing conditions of strife between nations, economic unrest, and moral decline. Across the mighty cities and fertile fields of our nation falls the dark shadow of legalized vice, graft and corruption in government, as well as the threat of imminent war. Further education stands to be interrupted by a call to arms, even as any business venture upon which we might embark. It is to be blind to the chronicles of our times to believe that we are in the midst of any but dangerously troubled years. Yet, through the mist which surrounds and obscures our future, we can discern the beacon of hope and promise held aloft, by those sacred pillars upon which the founders of our country raised' the American way of life- The Commandments of God, made manifest in the Articles of the Constitution of the United States. The time is come when it no longer sufiices to passively cherish our fatherland, our homes, loved ones, and our Catholic faith. We must prepare to fight those who besmear the Con- stitution and ridicule the Commandments. Fight with moral- ity in the professions! Fight with Christian love in society! Fight with fact in the publications of the world! Fight with eloquence in a thousand halls of public assemblage! Fight with our lives amid the thunder of the battlefield! .Can we fight? Can we stand victorious? This is known only to the Almighty, and of this matter we can say naught -save that it is to this end that we muSt go, and this the road that we must tread! The dust of time slowly settles, first blurring, then all but obliterating the memory of a goal achieved, the work of an entire life blossoming forth in the glow of ultimate realization . . . W'e are resolved that the memory of one such monument in the life of Sister Mary De-Lellis, will not fade from our hearts. W'e have witnessed the GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY of one of our most beloved teachers. W'ith a fervent prayer that she will know the joy of many more triumphs, both spiritual and temporal, we, the Class of 1953, lovingly dedicate this, the W'endelite of our senior year to Sister M. MARY IMMACULATEI Donald Cavanaugh, '53 -E I ,1 Dear Graduates: You, the Class of 1953, deserve great credit for your scholastic achievements. St. Wendelin is proud of his sheep. I, too, am proud of you, and proud of your endeavors and achievements during the past four years. During this time you have benefitted by an ever-improving educational atmosphere of the highest quality. You have caught the flaming torch from your predecessorsg have kept it burning, and will leave an even higher ideal to those who come after you. As you leave your Alma Mater, you are taking with you, consciously or perhaps un- consciously, one outstanding mark - the mark of character. By character I mean INDIVIDUALITY, distinguished by moral excellence. The world today is in great need of men and women of your type. With God's help carry on, and do your bit to make this a better world. GOD LOVE YOU! REV. GEORGE P. ANGEL R PAS 0 1 'ii .x AQ F LMA N WVQQ vm . W.. Trashy- 5 .gi-una-' REVEREND C. Out of the helplessness of childhood, out of the ungainliness of youth, you have emerged into the stature of men and women, and at each stage of your progress you have found kind hands to lead you where the way was dark, and strong arms to lift you where the road was rough. Graduation brings with it a change in the form and spirit of thingsg and henceforth, you are to be givers rather than receivers. We have been students together, you and I. You have learned much from meg I, too, have learned much from you. Every day has been a growth, every year has done its best to impress upon you that which it now becomes your duty and privilege to express to the world. Each such impression calls for a complete and definite expression in what- ever form your life work may be. Find your work, and then do it. As you go forth out of school life, step as bravely and boldly into Life's school, resolving to hold fast to that which is good, to make the world better and wiser and happier because of your living in it. With God you shall be strong, with Christ, as your King, you shall conquer whatever forces shall place themselves in your way as you continue in the building of the beautiful palace of your soul, the one great edifice worth while in this life - a truly Christian Character, the foundation of which you have laid during your school days. Wai. i wmv' 14' T '17, This year's Wfentlelite will serve to illustrate the outstanding ability of Mary Catherine Zimick. It has been largely through her efforts and editorial leadership that this yearbook went to press. Mary Kayf' as she is known, is one who has given of her time and energy to almost every extra and C0- curricular activity in which St. NVendelin High School has seen fit to enter, during her four years here. Besides holding the position of yearbook Editor, Mary Kay has for four years been President of the school chapter of the Catholic Forensic League, also a four year member of the UA team in debate and speech, and this year, President of the Federation of Catholic High Schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. She holds membership in the Science Honor Society and the W'riters Club, has participated in many radio seminars over sta- tion WDUQ, and has been the annual entrant in the American Legion Oratorical Contest and other activities far too numerous to mention. In view of this amazing record, it will be noted that Mary Catherine Zimick, during her entire four years at St. Wentlelin School, has been an HONOR STU- DENT. The 1955 W'endclite, therefore, salutes Mary Kay as one of our finest students, also one of the leaders of the St. Wentlelin student body. 'N .IULY41775 52 mtammoltft, Eecfarafwn ms. Under the direction of Father Finneran, students attend both religious and social events. Along with the men of the parish they assist at Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body every second Sunday of the month. The high- spot of each year's program of events is the Communion Breakfast. The principal speaker at this ycar's Communion Breakfast was Very Rev- erend Monsignor Thomas J. Quigley. SODALITY All of the senior girls belong to the Blessed Virgin Sodality and presumably quite proud of the fact. Every May a special day is set aside on which the Sodalists pay homage to the Blessed Mother by par- ticipating in the beautiful May Crowning Ceremony. One could ask for no greater model than Our Blessed Lady and with this in mind every member of the Sodality has attempted to follow in the footsteps of Mary. May every sodalist then each and every day of her life continue to remain a faithful follower of Mary, Virgin and Mother. By the very essence of its nature, a school is in existence, or at any rate should be, to educate the students thereof, in such a manner as to enable those students to negotiate the intricate walks of life, main- taining an acceptable standard of material existence, and all the while retaining the traveling companion of moral integrity. The modern curriculum offers to the students, few, if any, proving grounds of greater severity than the compilation of the annual yearbook, for this enterprize demands great admin- istrative ability, literary style, editorial skill, and journalistic know how, and a lot of physical endur- ance, and above all, the wholesale application of most everything that has been taught during the long years of our training.
