St. Benedict can truely be proud ol' his sons whose true Benedictine spirit pervades our school. ln the traditional Benedictine work and pray atmosphere, the students progress intellect- ually, spiritually, socially and physically. The backbone ol' St. Vincent Prep is composed ol' these learned monks and layinen. Each summer finds them at the country's leading Universities, advancing in the knowledge of their individual helds. As a result, a never end- ing source. ol' learning is ours. Father Martin, a new addition to the Prep, impressed everyone with his keen interest in intramural sports. ln the Scholasticate, Fathers Giles and Kiliau kept order among those lun loving second year men. No one ever saw Father Giles without his usual smile, and Father Kilian's humor was never lacking. ln fact, the sophomores never missed a laugh. 1.if' Rauch tried in vain to start his Lil Taylor lan club and had little success. The best club was the tractor club which was led by Reed and had Howden Harper and Nlonsour as star members. They longed for the day when they would have their campus lifted. The play deals with the French Colonists who, when finding that New Orleans has been ceded by lfrance to Spain, decided to light the Spanish. lnspired hy the Mocking Bird, Val -lean Cray. the colonists united. The Puppies then smothered Harold llunior High lil-0 and the Hurst Al,V.'s 26-7. They then went ou to outclaw the ligthing Pussies, in the annual Puppy-Pussy classic to end a successful season. Although the whole Puppy squad will prove excellent reserve strength for the varsity next year, stardom should be in store for such stal- warts as ace-backs lerry Gloekler and Yan Yanossy, as well as sterling linemen, Ish Nic- Laughlin, Diamond Loncharich and Dud Dud- finski. 'lf Y- i Future Kittens Prepare for Varsity Posts Although the record ol' Mr. lstvan's -Iayvees shows two wins and twelve losses, it gives no indication ol' their style of play. Tony Ciraula, Joe Policastro, Tom Donohoe, Joe XVitte-nauer and Marty Hannigan were the most frequent starters. Mr. lstvan began grooming his J.V.'s this year in hopes of bountiful returns next season. By downing St. Thomas 29-27 the underclass- men gained their first victory with Tony Ciraula scoring 9 points. Team play enabled them to defeat St. VVendelin, 28-23 as Ciraula, Policastro, and Gloekler marked 8, 7 and 6 points res- pectively. Many players from the reserves are destined for the l952 Varsity. Wlith the building of the new gym in full swing, the Prepsters are looking forward to many successful seasons. Performing like miniature professionals, the Pussies battled their way through a long l5 game schedule to produce a record of ten wins against live defeats. Under the able and earnest tutoring of Coach Father Canice the Frosh got their first taste of real Vincentian basketball. Quick learna ing of the fundamentals of starters Persichetti, Prezioso, Grimm, Nussbaum and Conley was quite evident as the scores per game grew. The game with the Junior Scholastics was the most thrilling. The Pussies, led by Fran Prezioso and Dick Persichetti with 6 and 5 markers respectively, downed their arch rivals, the Schol- astics, 22-17. Those who are unable to make the Varsity squads have ample opportunity to play all sports. ln these activities competition runs high, and many are the thrills and spills as everyone gives his all. They leave the boys with the memory ol' scoring baskets, bowling 200 and hitting home runs. Ol' course, there are also those haunting memories of missing layups, bowling gutter balls, and striking out. But most of all the boys remember the lun they had doing these things. The Frosh had a successful basketball season with the Hornets cropping league honors. The team included such stalwarts as Conley, Capt., Samay, Tripoli, Chladny and Pappert. High scorers lor the freshmen were Chladny 102, Grimm 100 and Nussbaum. Maur Hall's basketball league ended its cam- paign with Mo1loy's Flying Squirrels romping to victory. The ehamp's roster boasted the skills of Molloy, Capt., Boyer, Brown, Santora, Reed, Lohman and Bowden. Molloy eopped the scor- ing title with 152 points. Pngr Iiiglity-four Nearly Normal captured Bede Hall's award. They leatured such stars as Ciraula, Capt., Napoleon, Altomonte, Severin, Robb and Thomas. Leading the scoring parade in Bede Hall were Thomas with 118 points, XValsh with 109 points, and Keagler with 90. Bowling aroused much interest in the Prep, and the leagues were very close. ln the novice American League, Tom Carrigan's Pin Splitters consisting ol' Hipps, Pistner, Heeter, Flesher and Bell took all honors. ln the National League, Father Martin's club consisting ol Lukas, Baum- gardner, Harchiek, YVilks and Cloekler topped Father Pirmin's hearled six in two out ol' threc gruelling playoll games. - High scoring in the league went to Father Julian with a 140 average followed by Father Pirmin 14-1, Hamill 140, Cornett 1410 and Mc- Conomy 138. Three members ol the Prep merited admission to the 200 club. They were lNleConomy 203 and 219, Reichlin 219 and Flescher 200.
