'l'hese were certainly fruitful years, years in which St. Vincent grew and matured amidst chaos and confusion which accompanied the depression and the second XVorld XVar. The gentle, far-seeing leadership of .'Xrchabbot .Xls fred has always been an inspiring factor in maintaining a tranquil academic and religious atmosphere at St. Vincent. Though kept quite busy with his munerous duties as .Xrchabbot and President of St. Vincent College, he has always found time to contribute his wise coun- sel to the solution of various problems we Prepsters have encountered. liut his heavy and exacting duties have taken their toll. l-lis work has been hard and the day long, and his body has grown weary. This is nothing new lor .-Xl, who has heen at the lead ol' his class lor the past four years. ln whatever activities he has engaged, whether scholastic or extracurricular, he has been outstanding. Always among the leaders in their classes have heen Vincent Buckel and qlerry Diethrich, two future lienedictines whose conscientious work is the pride ol' all their professors. Not less proficient in his studies is Dave McDonald whose liorte has al- ways heen mathematics. Although with us only two years, jerry Carroll, through his zeal- ous erforts, has distinguished himsell' as an outstanding student. Leading the junior class scholastically are Rocky Graeiano, Bill Xvittenauer and 'lay Connolly who are equally proficient in other activities. Guido Cassari and lVilliam Soisson are the top scholars of the sophomore group, From the lowest hall comes the student with the highest average in the Prep, Niels Bucs- sem, all the more outstanding because less than two years ago he eouldn't speak a word ol' English. COUNCIL True Leadership is a Keystone of Society's Success. llnder the aegis ol' President Ierry Carroll, several committees were formed to derive max- imum efficiency from the Council. The Res- olution Committee, with Tom Cilfels as chairman and Connolly, Stechschulte, and Mulligan as members, was the vehicle for sug- gestions of the student body to reach the Student Council. The Social Committee, with .-Xl Bautz as chairman and 'Iohn McCreary, Ashton, Xllittenauer, and Mulligan as mem- bers, was the organizing factor for the social activities. 'l'o limit the Student Council's functions as merely social activities is fallacy, because it provides leadership lor every class function.
