In the .Q l following pages we shall try to tell you in words and H l pictures some of the reasons Why we seniors look back on the past four years as golden days and why as ' as l we have selected Music as the theme of our book. 1 l First we want you to meet the Directors of our Aj l symphony, the Benedictine priests who besides teach- ' i ing and counsplling us have- given us a glimpse of t e meaning o armony 1n 1v1ng. ,Q l 1 Next ou will en'o meetin Bill, oe, Skinn , -I Y Butch, and the rest of the bo s who have shared our . . . j song and played well their part in the l1fe of campus 3 and classroom. F l It's time out for Intermission in the th1rd sectlon I of the CHIMES of ' r as we leave behind us the 1 l . .0 . . iz l heavier notes of administration and classes and take , . . . . . 1 l up the lighter theme of extra-curricular activities. l Star Performers we have called the next divi- 5 l sion of the book, but we haven't forgotten that back -f of every stand-out there must be a team. Varsity s orts have tau ht us the value of co-o eration, and A . NEALON F.,vl'11i:R CAMILLUS DR. l51c111'.xs1c Nml oN l'Vhen the seniors moved into the V.G.'s and named it Placid Hall, it was only natural tl1at Father Camillus should be 11an1ed its first prefect. Under his keen and vigilant eye the floor lived up to its name. But there was fun, too, when beds were 0VCl'llll'HCLl and the halls echoed with the basso rumble of Father Clamillus' Time lor ranks! or Lights out! That glow ol' health which visitors notice on the cheeks of romping Prepsters is not d11e entirely to St. Vincent bread. The lion's share of the credit must be given to the school's medical staff, Dr. S. XV. Nealon, Dr. Gervase Nealon, and Mr. Hunger- n1an. Aches and sprains were Mr. Hungerman's specialties, and the boys loved to spend a few days in the cheery Sanctum of the lnhrmary. lVhen more serious illness threatened, the Doctors Nealon were right on hand to give every student the best of medical attention. Because of tl1e excellent health precautions taken by the school, we have always been assured of prompt and kindly service. .Q You're next, Mr. Roach! Hazeltine liosanovirh Irons Dwyer Haley Freshmen Fantasies l'El3i5.'i'J ' With lfathers Klolumban and .-Xelred at the helm, the freshies of llenet Hall were bound to have a great year. Father Aelred became famous for his studyhall speeches and his patience when a rumpus was raised in the dorm. On the campus he was always seen in the midst of his proteges as he whipped up the Pussies into a great lighting squad or settled a dispute in the intra- mural mushball league. Father Columban was the quiet type, but his big smile and paternal ways made him a big favorite with the gang. Whenever a studyhall desk or a bench down in the Hole needed lixin', he was sure to put things straight with a few dell strokes of his hammer and saw. Andy Dwyer was the grandpa of the class. A swift glance of his eye was all that was needed to throw a spell over W7ildman .-Xbt or Rebel Lewis. Brainstorm of the frosh was Sepesy, but he got lots of competition from Bob Leppert, Al johns, and Ed Rutledge. Mr. Hungerman will never forget ijt Roach, the lVest Virgiuny mountain boy with an ailment for every day of the week. Steve Kosanovich became Mr. Craham's favorite pupil in General Science after three or four private sessions, and Nor- man Kuzma rapidly gained the reputation as the juggingest member of the class. Peer among the freshman sportsmen was Bob Dierdorf, winner of the Hljllflfln Golf Tourney, and Pat Crowley excelled at ice-skating when winter sheeted the lake with ice. Ronny Conforti had the tough luck to undergo a mastoid operation, but the boys remembered him in their prayers every day and were on hand to welcome him back when he recovered. ln every way it was a great year for the Frosh-a year filled with the tumbling, joyful melodies of happy days. His able assistant was Father Marcellus who made his debut this year as a Prep prefect, teacher, and baseball coach. It wasn't long until he had captivated the hearts ol all the boys, and although he had a reputation lor strictness in classroom and studyhall, his interest in every boy's welfare was apparent to all. Fun and Cheers Coach Bill Rafferty's charges opened the sea- son defeating Derry Township, 19-7. Kukurin scored on a pass, and Waters raced 55 yards for another touchdown. After Derry had scored, Civitarese added the final counter in the fourth quarter, while defensive work by Veitch and Schendel held Derry scoreless, The Prep's 15-game win streak was snapped, when Johnstown Catholic took a 7-6 decision. Both teams scored in the final canto. The Blue and Gold received -Iohnstown's kick-off and, with McGuire and Sundry sparking the play, drove 70 yards for their only score. Ligonier High proved no match for the Prep as they went down to defeat, l9-0. McGuire and Sundry scored touchdowns in the second period. After a scoreless third period, Waters intercepted a pass and scampered 85 yards for the final points. Lady Luck was missing when the Prep played Norwin High, on a rain-soaked field, at Irwin. The Blue and Gold lost a close game, 12-7, as McGuire scored the Prep's only touchdown in the second quarter, and Bill Waters booted the extra point. Putting up a stiffer opposition than expected, St. Luke finally succumbed to the Prep's power, l2-G. Johnny Civitarese scored twice for the Prep: bucking seven yards in the second period, and dashing 40 yards to clinch the game in the final canto. With the subs seeing a lot of action, the Prep rolled over Washington I.C., 20-0. Kukurin caught a pass for the first score, and a few min- utes later Civitarese added another. Carl Sardi ran I2 yards in the Hnal heat for the last score. Fumbles paved the way for a l9-0, defeat at the hands of Altoona Catholic. Although Gerthoffer, Buchanan, Burgunder and Melotti were excel- lent on the defense, miscues offset all of this and cost the Blue and Gold the game. Beat Central! That was the cry that echoed throughout the school on the eve of the biggest game of the year. In the third quarter, Manoli made a sensational catch in the end zone for the Prep's lone score. Central frustrated Brady and Civitarese in their tries to gain yardage, and walked off the field with a 26-7 win. lv X X l T i ' 4............ . 1 :1 1 Lf.. .IL . if ,P I x I 1 ,-3'.v,f:,--f-Q ,g- n hd.. l'.E'T..'.,L.l. To make matters more dillicult, the Prep was without a coach. Mr. Rafl'erty's resignation was necessitated by the pressure of work in a new defense-plant position, but Father Louis stepped in to lill the gap created when he left. Under his capable coaching the Bearkittens succeeded in winning seven and losing nine games. lVith Buchanan at center, Kukurin and Ma- tanic at forward. and Sundry and Sardi at guard, the team laced Derry Township, 49-25. 'Then followed a G0-19 triumph over St. -lohn's. The next game was a 33-24 win over Derry Township. George Kukurin rolled in 23 points and Mou- sie Matanic, 20, as the Blue and Gold walloped St. Francis, 63-29. In their lirst Catholic League appearance, the Prep bowed to North Catholic, 54-31. Kiski was next on the roster. but even Lou Buchanan's 14 counters failed to stop the Salzburg boys who won, 41-37. The Prep's fifth straight loss was to Central Catholic, 41-29. The Kittens finally snapped their losing streak at the expense of St. -Iohn's with Kukurin pacing the scorers to the tune of 18 points. Subs saw lots of action in the 40-13 triumph. The most thrilling game of the year was the North Catholic battle which the Prep lost by one basket, 21-19. Matanic and Kukurin led the team to a 34-32 win over Kiski and spurred on by this victory, they met Central Catholic for the second time. The locals played their best but came out on the short end of a 50-32 score. Johnstown Catholic met a much stronger Prep team in their second encounter but eked out a 26-I9 victory in the last period. Turning on the power against Ligonier, the Kittens led the Valley team in the third quarter but were unable to turn the tables completely and lost, 24-20. M.A.. M.Mus You are probably wondering why we have placed our dedica- tion way back here- almost at the end of the book. The answer is - Father Ralph! We wanted to dedicate the Thirteenth Volume ofhhe CHIMES to the faculty member who throughout our four years at the Prep has been a never-ending source of inspiration and encouragement to all of us. And as we write Finis to our career at the Prep, we want to pay deserved tri- bute to the little man who was always there with a cheery smile and a frierrdly hand when we needed them most. At entertain- ments, in the classroom, and at band or glee club practices he never failed to fire us with his enthusiasm and energy. It was natural that we should select Music as the theme of our yearbook, for our lives have been made happier and our hearts more filled with joy through our acquaintance with the maestro of the Prep. When things went wrong, when studies seemed hopeless burdens, the spirit of Father Ralph was like sunshine dilspelling the gloomy mists and revealing the brighter side of life., To us, Father Ralph was a friendly melody. He moved along in fast time with a lilt that soon had us all up on our toes imi- tating him. When memories of him come back to us in later years, our hearts will quicken and our spirits rise in harmony with his. , Guidance, inspiration, happiness -- these were the lasting values we gained from our friendship with . . . t FATHER RALPH 4'- .f if 5, X .gfufiffzf Our President 1 - D lxl.l hiv. .XI.1fR1anKoc:1l. 0.8.8.
