School with Four Names ln September of 1954, three Sisters of St. Joseph, one priest, and gym instructor began teaching in four classrooms of the old Sacred Heart schoolrbuilding, known as Pius X High School, still later the name was changed to Duchesne, and then to St. Joseph.. Today, inthe new buildings at845 Dunn Road, the school is called St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Only freshmen attended the school in its first two years of existence. Then in 1956 the school accommodated sophomores by increasing the faculty and by holding double sessions. Construction began soon after that in January of 1957. The first Mass was celebrated by the administrator of the school, Father John Shocklee, in the newchopel, furnished with only an altar. Sister Mary Martin of the Sisters of St. Joseph was the first principal. The future iuniars went to DeAndreis far their last two years of high school. When school began in September of 1957, there were seven sisters. The freshmen had classes in the new Corpus Christi High School, while the sophomores attended classes in the Sacred Heart building. On June 7, 1958, Joseph Cardinal Ritter laid the cornerstone for Aquinas, the first campus-style high school in the Midwest. School opened in the new buildings on October 6, 1958, with more than five hundred students: freshmen, sophomores, iuniors. The faculty consisted of six priests, three sisters, and eight lay teachers. After Christmas, the cafeteria and administration buildings were opened. Formal ceremonies of dedication of all the buildihgs were held on April 19, 1959 . 1959-60, with the first graduating class, saw the beginning of new traditions: first official school rings, first operetto, first printed school newspaper, first yearbook, first prom, first May procession. More than one thousand students enrolled in 1960. Nine priests, twenty-one sisters, and nineteen lay teachers comprised the faculty. This year saw the first homecoming activities, The eighth building was completed. ln 1961-62. . . 1251 students and a faculty of sixty-two. . . . Reverend John Holland replaced Reverend John Shacklee as administrator. . . . The AlliedVeterans presented to Aquinas trophies for outstanding citizenship and Americonism. ln 1962-63. . . 1528 students and a faculty of seventy-five. ln 1963-64. . . 1615 students and faculty of seventy-seven. Re ve re n d John Bokel replaced Reverend John Holland as administration . . . . Sister Joseph Andre' replaced Sister Mary Martin as principal. ahiw POPE PAUL VI PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON 'A 3 JOSEPH CARDINAL RITTER After the assassination, President Johnson successfully carried the followers of the New Frontier into a new administration. This country emerged from its tribulation with another strong man as its leader. A few months before, Pope Paul Vl led the Ecumenical Council into a new session, Like our President, the Pope had to succeed a forceful man. Like our country, the Church continued. Here in St. Louis, Joseph Cardinal Ritter worked actively behind each leader. He took part in I-he Council and participated in the civil rights movements. Working side by side, Church and State can exist in harmony.
