ISQ CROSS COUNTRY FRONT ROW: Chris Shylonski, Mike McFarland, Joe DiPaoli, Glen Williams, Tom Montgomery, Bob Schoefermeyer, Martin Brown. MIDDLE ROW: Bob Grieshnber, Gene Schlereth, Mike Sheehan, Tim Montgomery, Coach Margratf. BACK ROW: Martin Saunders, Kevin Russell, Ken Whitley, Tom Orso, Tam Pierce, Denny Drehkoff. Cross-Country Cross country is a relatively new sport here at Aquinas. Last year the team was started under the direction ot Mr. Devoti, who this year, handed the coaching iob over to Mr. Margraff . The courses usually are between l lf2 miles and 2 lf4 miles. These courses may vary from flat terrain to the rolling hills ofa used-to-be golf course. Following is an explanation of the scoring system. ln such a meet the lowest score wins. One point is given to the first place winner, two to the second runner, etc. The official score is tallied by taking the points received by the first five boys from each team that runs. For this reason, some very high scores may result in a large meet such as the district or state meet. In the first year of competition, with only two lettemen returning, Bob Grieshaber and Denny Drehkaff, the harriers won one meet and lost four. Besides these five meets, they managed to come in second in a triangular. One of the highlights of the season was Captain Bob Grieshaber's record-breaking run ill :3Oj at St. Louis mile course. Pat O'Keefe passes the ball to Tom King while dribbling dawn the field. Soccer Squads See Acllon Hopes for next year aren't too bright for most of the starting team graduates this year, but there will be the seniors, juniors, and sophomores who gained a little experience in '63-'64 season to build around. Players returning next year are Jim Hiem, Stan Herman, Ron Creceluis, Jim Russel, Tom King, Butch Beeman, Tim McNiff, Skip Patralia, Mike Arata, Marty Brown, Tom Bopp, and Skip Kelly. Soccer is played with eleven men on the team. The obiect is to kick the ball through the opponent's goal. The player may head it or use any other part of the body, except the forearm or hands. Scoring is accomplished by teamwork and the passing of the ball among the forwards, through the defense, to the goal. The player must have a natural ability for the game. Size isn't too important, but a big person is at a disad- vantage, for coordination and speed is important. Soccer rules include the following: the player can't touch the ball with forearms or hands, can't chop or deliberately kick the opposing player. Goalie throws to far side of field. Skip Petralla assists Tom King as he klcks for goal.

Come on it won't break you. Ticket anybody? Remember, there's another game before ours. You'll get to see at least one good game. And so a varsity player sold tickets to the DeAndreis Tournament. Admittedly it was an off-season for varsity basketball with 19 losses against 4 wins. But game analysis shows more good points than the game results. Of the games lost, 22'Ms were lost by a margin of five points or fewer. Defensive work showed the team to be a go-getter, possessing the ball more times than the opponent. Greg Hoffman managed to steal the ball when the team needed it the most. Weaknesses on the Falcons' part came close to the basket when their shots seemed iinxed, and efforts frozen. First-half leads diminished as time sneaked energy away from the varsity squad. Height averaged at 5'9 for the team, making it one of the shortest on the game circuit. Greg Hoffman was named to the second team of the All-C.A.C. teams. At half-season Jim Welton totaled 171 shots taken .
