v See, boys, that's the way you dribble a ball down the field, tells Coach Donohue to Mike Arata and Tom Bopp. TEAM FIRST ROW: Jim Russell, Stan Hennan, Tom Bopp, Flatle Ron Reicheit Denn Drehkoff. SECOND ROW: Ron Y Y , Rom King, Skip Kelly, Butch Beeman, Marty Brown, Kung, THIRD ROW: John Muelrling, Pat O'Keefe, Tam Blethroad, Stlehr, Coach Donohue. Soccer Team The soccer team isn't too well known at Aquinas. Still, it plays an integral part in developing the student who participates. Grades averages must be kept. The situation could be improved by a little attendance at the home games and some interest shown by the students and faculty. Maior weakness was the field here at Aquinas. lt was too small, forty yards narrower than regulation field, thus in playing-away games, the team bunched up and on defense couldn't cover wide plays. Only strong points were the four victories. Outstanding players were Pat O'Keefe, Butch Beeman, John Muehling. The team elected Pat O'Keefe captain for his playing ability, aggression, and leadership. Five forwards have these positions: outside left, inside left, center, forward, inside right, outside right, six backs occupy left halfback, center halfback, right holfloack, left fullback, right fullback, goalie positions. Teams that beat Aquinas usually showed a little more speed and better ball control. It seemed they'd get the iump on the Falcons and the lucky break or vice versa. Pat O'Keefe passes the ball to Tom King while dribbling dawn the field. Soccer Squads See Acllon Hopes for next year aren't too bright for most of the starting team graduates this year, but there will be the seniors, juniors, and sophomores who gained a little experience in '63-'64 season to build around. Players returning next year are Jim Hiem, Stan Herman, Ron Creceluis, Jim Russel, Tom King, Butch Beeman, Tim McNiff, Skip Patralia, Mike Arata, Marty Brown, Tom Bopp, and Skip Kelly. Soccer is played with eleven men on the team. The obiect is to kick the ball through the opponent's goal. The player may head it or use any other part of the body, except the forearm or hands. Scoring is accomplished by teamwork and the passing of the ball among the forwards, through the defense, to the goal. The player must have a natural ability for the game. Size isn't too important, but a big person is at a disad- vantage, for coordination and speed is important. Soccer rules include the following: the player can't touch the ball with forearms or hands, can't chop or deliberately kick the opposing player. Goalie throws to far side of field. Skip Petralla assists Tom King as he klcks for goal.
