K -259 21, Both today and during the Revolutionary peri-od, fashion in our country has been dictated by French designers sending their creations to America. Styles for both sexes were elaborate and restrictive, from the powdered wig to the narrow toed, high- heeled shoe. Tight, velvet, burgundy colored pants sound elaborate for a woman these days, but for men of the 1770's, they were the height of fashion. These knee breeches, as they were called, ended at the knee cap with an embroidered band, and were tied, buckled, or buttoned there. With this, was worn a high-waisted, cut-away coat, slightly open in the front, which revealed the matching vest and fretted shirt under- neath. Silk stockings and fancy buckled high heels completed the outfit. But no man was ready to leave his room until he applied his beauty patch, strong perfume, and of course, his powdered wig. Ladies wore low-necked dresses adorned with deep, doubled ruffles of sheer fabric or lace at the elbow or wrist, and material was gathered or pleated to fill the low neck of the gown. Accessories included fans, striped sashes, bands at the waist, and heavy perfume.
